Some inside info from the ground in Wisconsin
There are several scary indicators I have heard from some business colleagues of mine:
1. National car sales for the first 10 days of October are DOWN 37%
2. A very large business owner with over 1,000 employees told me Governor Doyle called him to ask what he thinks about the crisis and how long it will last. My friend could not believe the governor was asking him for advice, probably was asking for a ground report. Doyle went on to tell him that the sales tax revenues are DOWN 20% already for the fiscal year.
I am sure this scenario is being played out in every state--
Lots of states are likely close to bankruptcy.
Also another large business owner I know has held emergency meetings to decide which employees are expendable. They will probably cut at least 20% of their workforce.
10/15 ... Update for Aurora Loans, Lehman Loan Paper Co.
That Lehman associated loan paper processing/management facility/branch that is in my 25,000 rural NE town ...... just posted that they are hiring 40 people. After laying off 125 a few months ago. This part of Lehman wasn't included in the selloff ..... of course they kept the profitable parts, and sold off the bricks to be "rescued".

Appreciate everyone's input. Helps sort through what is really real and what isn't!! No real changes in my 25,000 rural NE town yet that are noticable ... but we are usually a few weeks behind. The only thing that might change that is that one Lehman's Loan Servicing Branches is here. But no buying gas to store in gas cans, or really stocking up on groceries that anyone has noticed. And I ask every time I go buy something at the different stores/stations. One of my friends keeps reminding me that the Great Depression didn' hit all at once. The stock market crashed in 1929, but it took until 1932 for it really to bite big time.
Some Information From Me
Ok so I have noticed a few things about work and it has been a bit unsettling. Before I get into this I will explain my background a bit. I have been working overnight/early morning shifts at Target for 2 years now. I have recently moved from New Jersey to Tennessee and with it I transferred my position. I work in the backroom and I see basically what is sold by pulling specific merchandise and sending it out to be put back onto the sales floor. Every morning the system goes through and makes up the lists of what is sold and we come in and pull it. These numbers have decreased quite a bit since I have moved down here. I have only been working about 2 months in Tennessee. Another factor I see coming into play is the limiting of hours to most workers. The schedule is posted for all to see, and I can honestly tell you that it has been a squeeze on many workers in my store. The last fact I am going to point out is that our store misses projected sales 4-6 days of the week by thousands of dollars. Thursday the store sold 15 thousand less than the projected amount. Honestly, Is the Credit Crunch Really Real?
Has anyone had credit applications turned down that usually wouldn't have been, or do you know anyone who has? Businesses or personal applications?

My son is a sub contractor in Washington. He says there are dozens of foundations sitting dead because general contractors are unable to use their lines of credit and cannot continue building these homes. He is down to 1 or 2 jobs every couple of weeks now when just as little as 2 months ago had more work than he could handle. So if builders that have existing credit are being denied money I am sure new loans or new credit must be at a stand still in that area as well.
We had a customer with a 710 FICO score
get turned-down for a $3000 loan to purchase one of our new mowers a coupla weeks ago. The guy was absolutely livid I might add! GE Money has all but stopped consumer lending.

I talked with two twenty-something ladies who live in my town. One works at the Macy's cosmetic counter, and she said that her sales are higher than ever, and that her Macy's stocks value drops every day. The other young lady doesn't know a thing about what is going on, absolutely nothing. I think that is pretty typical of the American people, in general.
The company my husband works for is on track for record profits this year if the 4th quarter is like the first 3 quarters. The company just bought up a lot of their own stock because they think it has become undervalued.

Panic in the hills
Retired here in the Missouri Ozarks, I don't get much face to face news. Visited by daughter over the weekend, however, and did get a report from my son-in-law who sells feed to cattle ranchers, horse breeders and feed stores.
He says that people are really scared. Two people told him they were going to cash in their 401(k)'s and pay the tax and penalty, just so they could have what was left in cash. Sales are down. Everyone is like a deer frozen in headlights.
My son-in-law is going Tuesday to close out his savings account, and is arranging to borrow the maximum possible from his 401(k). He is going to take the proceeds and pay off his house mortgage, and with what is left, he is going to keep some cash at home and buy gold shares (taking delivery of the certificates). He already has money in gold shares and we both are betting that very high inflation rates will be a more likely result than price deflation.
I have not seen lines at the local banks, but I did personally take out everything but a few thousand dollars which I left to be able to write checks for things like telephone, electricity, etc.

They will still accept credit cards, but would prefer cash as their credit card fees have gone through the roof.

I would like to reiterate and make it clear. A finalization of their fascist economic takeover is happening right NOW, what do you think it is when THEY get government(tax payer) money, hand it over to their follow insiders(they get their cut too in some form) so that they can buy up all the REAL assets and institutions like gas, water, electric, etc at EVERYONE elses expense? Not just the tax payers but all the business's that ARENT part of this clique.
Sure they are NOT going to say, the government is taking control of the institutions because the government ISNT, the insider cronies that control the government are the ones taking over the institutions with the help of the government they control. What they are, is a NETWORK of cronies, some act as government for their private business's(take Paulson for instant, though he really isnt government because the Fed isnt but they'd like you to believe it is) that "GAME" the system. The government is usurped and run by these private interests that put their people into place or bribe ones they didnt put into place. That is the definition of fascism(though it goes deeper then that - globalists), sure they MASK it and try to DECEIVE us so as not to be called on it, but it is what it is.

Let's say everything goes to hell with the dollar. How could there be any military or police "controlling" anything? They get paid with the same worthless money as we do and I'm sure the percentage of them with families is high. Unless they get paid in gold or silver, why would they go anywhere when they don't know what would become of their own family at home?

The regular person on the street looks at a person warning of this and says, "Ya, right," and walks away thinking, "Kook." What is happening to us defies logic. Can't happen.
