Atlanta’s cops need this bad boy for SWAT raids on Bubba for selling weed.
It’s no big deal, insists the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It’s just the local cops with a $500,000 APC. For you civilians, that’s Armored Personnel Carrier.
“Don’t be surprised to see an Army tank rolling down a street near you,” chides the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The Cobb County police department has refurbished a donated Armored Personnel Carrier for officers to use in SWAT situations.”
Apparently, the cops think those on the receiving end of any SWAT operation using this military vehicle are armed to the teeth like the resistance in Iraq or maybe the Taliban in Afghanistan. It certainly is not needed for busting the average dope dealer, even one hopped up on PCP.
Equipped with thermal sensors, computerized tracking devices, night vision, tear gas launchers and other gadgets, the all-black six-wheel unit can hold up to nine SWAT officers.
It has a new engine and transmission, which will allow it to reach a speed of 60 miles per hour.
“In these times, you don’t know what you are facing,” Cobb police chief George Hatfield said. “We want the maximum safety for our officers and the public. We want to be prepared for whatever comes up. This is another tool that will allow us to be quicker and faster in our response.”
The L.A.V. 300 will also send a message to the civilians — increasingly, there is little difference between the cops and the military. In order to get the message out, the APC will be on display at Marietta’s town square, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Not a Tank
It's an APC, and the fact that "civilian" law enforcement thinks they need it is disturbing, but it's not a tank. It doesn't fire explosive rounds, and it has tires rather than treads. They're probably run flats but still...

I'm sure the public safety was at the top of the criteria when deciding on this purchase.
I am very concerned about the police's militant build up, mainly because I have a deep McLuhanist belief when it comes to technology.

You could probably make an armored truck this good at home using 1/4 inch mild steel, carriage bolts, a high-amp drill, and JB Weld.
So far as I know, it's not even illegal to build one yet.

It has wheels, so civilians can own + insure + drive.
As another posted stated, these are typically more of a hassle than they are worth. Insurance company will immediately call it a tank and ignore that it has wheels. This will delay the insurance policy. Low gas mileage. Typically will require much maintenance with parts that are not stocked at the corner parts store.

1.) "I'll admit it. Shopping for a personal tank can be a bit daunting. Many times in the past I've purchased overpriced, so-called "battle tanks", then driven them into battle only to be wrecked in ten minutes by the first blow off of some insurgents home-made morter.

In real warfare these weapons will not be that useful against the"civilian" population. If some dumb a@@ working for the state is foolish enough to attack American citizens and set off a Boston Massacre event ... well I really don't want to say it here but there are ways to "reach" someone even when they are surrounded by armor plate.
The real danger are gasses etc.

Quit calling it a TANK! :)
Its and APC! Tanks have tracks and a turret with large bore main gun. Tanks carry only the crew and their primary use is anti-vehicular.
The LAV 300 isnt even used by the US. Its armor is only rated for 7.62mm (30 caliber) a boy scout could disable the thing.
A TANK is an M1A2 Abrams with up to 18" of frontal armor. If your police department get these you might want to buy one too.
PDs getting these LAVs or the old Soviet BRDMs is just an ego trip and a watse of your money more than anything. The PD around here has had an APC for 15 years and it has actually come in handy a few times.
IMO the line in the sand is the offensive armament. There is ZERO reason for a PD to have anything other than small arms. So no M2 50 Cal, no LAV with the 90mm cannon etc. APCs can be very useful in getting officers into buildings safely.

Wow. I live in Cobb County
I can't see a need for this vehicle. Cobb County is often referred to as Snobb County because of all the beautiful expensive neighborhoods.
The one thing is that Cobb Country was invaded by super expensive houses...many of which were never sold. Up until the mid-90's, I had never seen a $400,000 house in my neighborhood. Suddenly, there were nearly a hundred houses between $400,000 to $1,000,000. I thought, "Hot damn! My property value will go through the roof." And yeah it did, a bit...but so did my property taxes.
Why didn't they sell? Although the super expensive houses were quite nice...they were built right next to each other! Hello? This is the South...even wealthy Southerners tend to like land, space, privacy, etc. When I spoke about these houses with neighbors, we pretty much came to the conclusion that these houses were built to attract wealthy people from other parts of the country...who apparently like to live on top of each other.
Whether or not this was the intention, a lot of these houses just did not sell...at least not anywhere near their initial price.
Will this result in civic minded people going nuts requiring Cobb police to have car-tanks? I don't see how. Even if the job market shuts off, those of us who can't afford to stay will leave. Atlanta, and all surrounding cities, is notorious for people moving in and out....all without any problems. It is very hard to find someone born in Atlanta still living in Atlanta.
Now if the Cobb police car-tank can stop high-schoolers from bashing mail boxes, I'd be happy.
A few dozen rioters will be able to overturn that quite nicely!
Anyone doubting that theres going to be mass rioting and martial law need only look at this. Funny how many coincedences keep happening all the while people deny martial law could happen...lets see,...Presidential directive 51 was passed giving the president authority to declare martial law and suspend elections in the event of a "terrorist" attack, natural disaster or ECONOMIC CRISIS! Now a military brigade has come back to the US to train for "crowd control" any they have been given a bunch of "non-lethal weapons" to train with i.e- microwave guns. Just look at this freaking cop tank for gods sake! its a f-ing tank! this would be used in a war not a police arrest. When shit goes down you all know what to do so thank god for that at least.
