First, people do not think two dimensionally. In other words, the things you say are not necessarily flat, they are in effect three dimensional (this is the best way I have of describing it). Being that your brain is remarkable at understanding many things at once. It's the reason subliminal messages work. So while you may immediately dismiss something as unimportant on a conscious level, your sub-conscious does not.

Second, our brains are also adept at filling in gaps. This boils down to "we see what we want to see".

Third, our brains make connections between events which may on a conscious level be seen as unrelated but can actually be built up to induce a pavlovian response.

So using subliminal word plants, he triggers an emotional state associated with a specific word and usually provides a third physical connection to underscore both the emotion and the word plant. He reinforces this several times so that when the word(s) and/or physical underscore occur again, your brain rewards you with an emotion.

In this way, he convinces people of things that aren't really there, or feelings that the person never really had.

Basically, conversational hypnosis... :)

The technique is employed by most everyone on some level, but those that actually understand even the most rudimentary aspects will achieve greater success in life with other people.

This is why politicians will do things like pick a hand gesture and use the exact same hand gesture on certain key points in a speech, repeat the same catch phrases, etc.

I can't find it anymore, but Frank Luntz was on a panel with actually intelligent people who demonstrated that they could with almost certainty predict a group answer to a specific question by simply placing what had appeared to be completely unrelated words in the lead up.

They told a story and then asked the audience what their favorite detergent was. The response was around 70-80% Tide. The reason, was that they used words to connect in 3 different ways symbology associated with tide. I wish I could find that video now.

The only protection against this from those who wish to control you is reason. Logic and reason and a pause before deciding will usually protect you from this manipulation.
