The Classics for intro to the Austrian school are listed below

... but let me recommend Economics for Real People: An introduction to the Austrian School by Gene Callahan (2004) as an extremely accessible read that does a great job explaining the fundamentals with updated examples.

Just a plug too for Murray Rothbard, one of the giants. When I first read Rothbard I thought "whoa" - it really challenged me. And then the more I read and thought about it the more I realized he was right.

Start with Henry Hazlitt and Frederic Bastiat.

Economics in One Lesson:

The Law:

That will give you a good basis of theory. For specifics of how disasters like the first great depression were caused and why they went on so long, see Murray Rothbard's works.

I will recommend ones I have found enlightening ...

I became aware of the Austrian School of economics when I read book reviews of several of the works of Ludwig von Mises in The Objectivist Newsletter which is still available:

That is the bookstore on the www.aynrand.org website of the Ayn Rand Institute. I searched there for books by von Mises himself and found none.

So your best bet is to go to www.mises.org where you will find all of the works of Ludwig von MIses. But his magnum opus is Human Action which might be intimidating because it is huge. I found him to be much more accessible by reading his essays in Planning for Freedom and Economic Freedom and Interventionism which is an Anthology of Articles and Essays by Ludwig von Mises.

You will also find books by Murray Rothbard at the www.mises.org site

Here is a link to the Lew Rockwell site. Rockwell was a student of Rothbard and there are links on his site to many articles written by Rothbard including an introduction to Ron Paul's book on Gold, entitled Ron Paul: A most unusual politician:

The hall mark of the writing of Ayn Rand, Rothbard, von Mises and Ron Paul is their lucidity.

I would recommend Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal and Atlas Shrugged by Rand as has Ron Paul.

I know you asked specifically for an introduction to Austrian Economics and I am sure you will find the essays of Ludwig von Mises and anything and everything by him and Rothbard to be worth reading.

Have fun.
