Let's have a good discussion. We are in a temporary spell of deflation, so this is essentially a buyer's market for staples.

We all have our own approach to this topic.I'd like to hear your ideas.

10 Things I Wish I Had Known About Food Storage 10 Years Ago
By Kellene Bishop

"I hate having to learn dumb lessons. Don’t you? As I’ve looked back and realized all the simple tricks and strategies I’ve learned over the last 10 years, I cringe at the thought of all of the money, time, anxiety, and energy I’ve wasted. So I decided to share them with you. You’re sure to learn something in this list! I hope you’ll learn from my mistakes NOW!"

Moving as quick as I can

This year I have moved to self-reliance as much as possible. Of course fuel will be the largest issue. So far this year I have
1. Build a country living grain mill (hand crank) and rigged a tread-mill motor with pulleys to it. Just today I ground my own wheat and made my own whole-grain bread...awesome! This grain mill work manually also and will grind larger items such as coffee if needed.
2. I have started gardening again. Learning to grow year round. Trying to grow green manure crops like buckwheat and put nutrients back in the soil. I have also dabbled in hydroponics. I have gone as far as growing lettuce in my attic, no i did NOT grow pot.
3. I have had my old generator tuned up and I now start it every week and run it for an hour.
4. We have purchased weapons needed for killing food or other things needed should things go down.
5. I have started canning food item. Basically I have started canning backberries, strawberries and plums. Hope to branch out to tomato's and sause.
6. I have started keeping bees to produce honey. Several hives that are a little "hot" that may be used for protection. Implementing white Dutch clover into my field (3 acres) to put nitrogen back in the soil and provide foraging for the bees.
7. Purchased chain saw and I am cutting/splitting dead wood on my property.
8. Obtaining 6 gallon buckets of bean and rice that are sealed and vacum packed for longer storage (up to 10 years). Stocking up on canned goods using coupons.
9. Looking into a "Tractor Coop" to raise a few chickens.

PERMACULTURE is something

PERMACULTURE is something that should be on the minds of everyone interested in the food security issue. It's a set of design principles as well as a philosophy. The term is a contraction of Permanent Agriculture, and also Permanent Culture. Work with nature, not against. Find solutions in problems. Double uses.

GOOD STUFF!!!

Outdoor bread oven

The November/December issue of Grit has plans for an outdoor oven. I used to read Grit years ago and have recently started reading it again. Has some good stuff in there about country living/living off the land.

Find Food Resources Now

America use to provide its own fish and vegetables - over government regulation, NAFTA, GATT and the like have put Americans out of work. Maybe it's time to buy a net to fish (yeah, I know they outlawed it) but the Constitution didn't.

Find local places who like to farm now, help them by working or donating - build alliances now. Find people who fish too.

Read your food labels and you'll see, frozen fish now comes from China.

Jim Rogers, the Wall Street

Jim Rogers, the Wall Street guru, is telling people to invest in agriculture (meaning farming and food).

We have global overpopulation from Asia kicking in exponentially, plus western economies that have been run into the ground. All adds up to food shortage and a continuing spike in money from farming.

I don't think it's a 'New World order plan' either. I think it's because the people running the world are idiots and incompetents.

The people running the governments of the world are idiots and incompetents, they have proven that time and again. The government can't even organize itself enough to operate on a semi-functional level...I'm with you, while I think there is a "elite group" of NWO thugs, I think they are way over their little collectivist heads to the point that this time around we might just seek another "knit one, pearl two" episode.

No, I mean overpopulation in comparison to the ability to keep up with food demands.

Of course we could feed the whole planet or any number of added billions under ideal free-market capitalist conditions, if we had a thriving world economy. But we don't.

A link to a site

I came across this the other day. This lists a one year supply of food, including approximate costs.

http://grandpappy.info/hfood1yr.htm

This is a great site.

This is a better list than I've seen before - actually food that we eat (rather than buying a 50 pounds of wheat, etc. - you have to know what to do with it. This is just regular food. It mentions that most of the foods listed can be stored for up to 5 years. I'd be concerned about bugs in flour, etc. He doesn't mentioned freezing it which I understand kills everything. I keep flour, Bisquick, etc., in my freezer. Anyone have any thoughts.

Yeah, I think freezing it is a good idea.

I have no freezer space or I would definitely do that. We've been vaccuum sealing the flour and rice but I don't know if that extends the shelf life much. Hopefully it helps a little.

Crossposted from 'buying land for small family farm'

-If you are planning to make a partial living from the farm, get at least 20 acres. Plant corn. It's a hot property now; it will make money. So will wheat.

-If you are only planning to feed your family with the farm, get five acres. Plant vegetables, raise goats, a few cows, and poultry.

-If you have black gumbo soil, plant a pecan orchard.

-If you have red sandy loam, plant an orchard of peaches, grapevines, and other fruit.

-If you live in the desert, plant melons and Muscat grapes.

-If you live in a cold or mountainous climate, plant apple trees.

Pack grains with argon

You can purchase argon at welding supply stores. Argon is heavier than air, and is a simple asphixiant. Meaning it will displace oxygen and kill anything that gets into your food and needs oxygen to breathe. Argon is noble, and will therefore not bond chemically with your food, where oxygen will.

Nitrogen is a cheaper alternative, but it isn't as heavy. So the container must be air-tight.

Warm vs. Cool Food Storage.

Have a look at this brief article:

http://standeyo.com/News_Files/Food/Extend_Shelf_Life.html

This seems like a problematic issue for people in the sun belt. I wonder if the historical prevalence of grain farming in areas like North Dakota, versus livestock ranching in areas like Texas, is attributable to storage issues?
