There's no such thing as "depleted uranium"

When radium decays, it becomes lead. As uranium, it's always mildly radioactive. However, it emits alpha particles, which cannot penetrate very deep (a sheet of paper will normally stop them). Nonetheless, when it gets inside the body, it can do a LOT of damage to soft tissues. That's why the Navy uses tungsten, not DU, in their Vulcan gatling guns.

I'll admit I'm no expert on DU, however, I do know that those that handle it use gloves, and that the Commander of the AFLC (Air Force Logistics Command) admitted on NIGHTLINE to Ted Koppell, that NO studies were made on the long term effects of inhaled DU.

It's not the radioactivity

Depleted uranium isn't all that radioactive, the danger comes from the fact that it's a heavy metal like mercury. When it's all in one big chunk, like an anti armor round, there's not much danger.

The problem comes when the DU projectile strikes a hard target and is reduced into tiny particles that can then be absorbed through the lungs, etc.

It has caused health problems in some military personel, but there are a lot of websites out there that overstate the danger posed by DU. Take it with a grain of salt.

U238 is the most common isotope of Uranium. It is radioactive, but so is whatever you ate for lunch (C14). With a nine digit half-life, there isn't much threat from radioactivity. Additionally, the decay mode is predominantly alpha (helium nucleus), and so would be blocked by your skin.

Radiation is not necessarily dangerous.

The radiation emitted is negligible.

The chemical danger is very real.

At some point you have to accept the risks. Depleted uranium is one of the things which puts our tanks on a superior technological level. Until a suitable replacement (or more effective but distinct weapon system) is found it will continue to be used.

I myself believe anti-tank missiles will slowly overtake ballistic projectiles for mobile anti-vehicular systems.

Until then, live with it.

Little to no relation is found between DU exposure and Gulf War Syndrome. Veterans who served on the Balkan Peninsula (where DU rounds where also used extensively) have shown a much decreased rate of medical disorders than those who served in the Iraq War.

I was trying to tell people about this stuff years ago and almost nobody seemed to care and you will never hear about it in the mainstream media. The cancer rates and birth defects in Iraq are at extreme rates due to our war.

It is ridiculous to say you are pro-life and still support our military adventurism.

I had the opportunity to speak with a soldier that just returned

from Iraq.....His mission was to teach them how to keep their people safe, especially the children. He taught the Iraqis how to be on the look out for bombs, and how to keep their ammo and bombs safe so the civilians in their communities will not get blown up. Before this guy was shipped to Iraq, he said the Iraqi soldiers were hiding their bombs and ammo close to schools, I was shocked, and quite frankly thought these Iraqis must be really stupid. They are not stupid, they are quite frankly very naive, and uneducated. I am not saying that we should be there to help them, what I am saying is we have created an enormous mess, and now these poor people have to deal with it, and now our government knows if they are not there to help they will be totally responsible for the mess if we leave. I was saddened to hear this from one of my fellow Air Force members, and quite frankly I think he was sad as well. We have created a mess, and a region that is doomed if we do not make it right, I never thought I would say that by the way.
