Critique my Iowa letter

0 votes

I decided to join the LA Meetup group's letter-writing campaign to write to voters in Iowa. I'd like some input on my letter, so I'm going to paste my draft below, any comments about additions, changes, exclusions would be appreciated. I'll mail this out later in the week with some other materials printed from the campaign website...

UPDATE: Edited to include some of your ideas

---------

Dear Friend,

I am writing you as a fellow American who is concerned about the direction this country is heading. I am in no way affilitated with any political campaign, and I am not on anyone’s payroll. I was provided with your address by a group of volunteers.

Our country is in a precarious situation right now, our national security is troubling, and our economic situation doesn’t seem much better.
The dollar has hit historic lows, and your money is worth less now than when you earned it. The only people who seem to be gaining from this inflation are the bankers on Wall Street. It may not be called a tax, but these inflationary policies are one, a tax that goes towards subsidizing massive corporations.

Our military is extended throughout the globe. To date we have discovered no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and we have not found or captured Osama bin Laden either. Meanwhile our border with Mexico is not secure – that’s right, while our troops are abroad protecting the rest of the world, our borders here in America remain largely unprotected. Anybody could walk across the border into this country at any moment – and the 10 million plus illegal immigrants living here are proof of that.

I don’t mean to scare you with all of this, but there are some serious issues to consider with the next presidential election. None of the major candidates have a plan to protect your money or your safety, in fact the “top tier” candidates (according to the media) are committed to continuing the inflation of our currency and sending more of our military abroad, to the detriment of our safety at home.

There is one candidate however, who has comitted to changing our foreign policy to be more sensible, and protect Americans right here in America. Dr. Ron Paul. Unlike most other candidates, Congressman Paul actually served in the Military, achieving the rank of Captain in the Air Force. In fact, Dr. Paul has received more donations from our military than any other candidate. He wants to keep soldiers in our country to protect us here, when we need them, and he wants to secure our borders to make sure that we know just who is coming into our country – a promise that the other candidates won’t make.

Congressman Paul is the only candidate who follows Ronald Reagan’s principles of small government. He is committed to a significant reduction in government spending, lowering our taxes and ending inflationary policies. Ron Paul is the only candidate who is truly concerned about the trillions of dollars in debt that our country owes to China, Europe and much of the rest of the world.

Decreasing government spending is the only way to save programs like Social Security and Medicare from going broke. Dr. Paul hopes to use the money saved by bringing our troops home from the Middle East to do just that. We will be safer here at home, and we will be able to provide everyone who has paid into the Social Security and Medicare programs with the programs that they already paid for. No other candidate is even talking about a plan to save Social Security, but Ron Paul has presented his plan to keep Congress’ hands off of your money.

Ron Paul is the champion of the Constitution, and has never voted for any measure in Congress, that he did not believe to be within the government’s powers. He fully supports the Bill of Rights, and will fight to ensure that your rights to free speech, your right to bear arms, and your right to practice your religion are not taken away. He has also stood up against Eminent Domain abuses, where the government has taken the land of private citizens at below-market prices to sell to developers.

Ron Paul's voting record is that one thing which makes him very electable, he has one of the most consistent voting records in Congress. He has been married faithfully to the same woman for 50 years. His record proves he is a statesman of integrity fully dedicated to our United States Constitution.

Iowa’s Caucus is fast approaching, and every vote will matter. The November election is not when the future of this country will be decided, that decision will happen far sooner. If America isn’t given the chance to elect a REAL small-government conservative, we will fall deeper in debt and our national security will continue to teeter on the brink of collapse.

Sincerely,

ME

Just one thing

Looks good, except you may want to touch on the objection that if we pull out of Iraq that there will be chaos and more people killed. That seems to be the big concern about leaving Iraq.

Critique my letter too :)

I have two letters that I'm including in each envelope. One is printed from my printer and is similar to that posted above (full of factual information and Ron Paul's positions). The second (below) is hand-written.

My reasoning goes like this: hand-writing a letter has two primary purposes, (1) get the attention, and (2) trust. Thus, facts and positions don't necessarily have to be hand-written, but something personal and appealing could serve both the above two purposes while introducing more information.

To that end, here is my hand-written "cover letter":

Dear ____,

Hi! I'm so grateful for this chance to write to you from the other side of the country. Not long ago, I felt a great deal of apathy toward politics because none of the politicians seemed worthy of my trust. It seemed to me that compromise meant big money, and integrity was short changed. But when I discovered presidential candidate Ron Paul, and really investigated his constitutional principles and his voting record, I began to have hope that there remained at least one statesman whose vote could neither be bought nor sold!

Ron Paul has everything it takes to become our next president--except corporate backing. That means it's up to us to back him if we want him in. He is honest, courageous, wise. He is a leader like Thomas Jefferson in our day. And he has massive support from the "grass roots"--for example, his campaign has raised more than $9 million since October from tens of thousands of individuals like us.

Ron Paul has given me hope again, and now by writing to you, I hope to pass it on. God bless America.

Best Regards,
Duane Johnson

Want to get people interested?

(handwritten on a piece of notebook paper)

Dear so-and-so,

Who is Ron Paul?

Hey, I want some help too!

Following is a letter I made up to put on car winshields. You can't even mention Ron Paul's name around my town because people cut you off (their minds are closed) so I made this letter to get people to at least read it. Ron's website is very small at the bottom of the page. Please offer any suggestions. I don't know why the address looks so large here, because in the lettter it's really tiny and Who is this man? is in bold type and much larger than it appears here.

Dear Fellow American Citizen,

Because of the many problems facing our country, the upcoming ’08 presidential election could be the most important one in our nation’s history.

Please take the time to think about the upcoming presidential election.
Please take the time to thoroughly investigate all the candidates.
Please take the time to imagine what each candidate would do when in office.
Please take the time to imagine in what direction each candidate would take our country.

I have already done so and I have found a candidate who will:
• Make decisions based upon the U.S. Constitution
• Institute sound economic practices
• Cut taxes
• Decrease size and scope of federal government
• Bring our troops home to protect our own borders
• Lower spending and force balanced budgets
• Protect gun ownership rights
• Stay away from foreign entanglements/alliances
• Stop nation-building and the policing of the world
• Oppose the North American Union
• Oppose a National ID card
• Support freedom and the rights of individuals

I can confidently say he will do these things because he has a record of 20 years in the House of Representatives and he has never voted:
• To raise taxes
• For an unbalanced budget
• To raise congressional pay
• For a federal restriction on gun ownership
• To increase the power of the executive branch

In addition:
• He served for 5 years in the Air Force
• He is pro-life, pro-family, and pro-liberty
• He has never taken a government-paid junket
• He is not accepting a government pension
• He was voted the Taxpayer’s Best Friend
• Lobbyists ignore him because he can’t be bought

Please take the time to investigate all candidates

Who is this man?

a suggestion

"the upcoming ’08 presidential election could be the most important one in our nation’s history"

this seems a bit dramatic, how about "... in our lifetime"?

best regards,

BP

scratch off surprise?

Yeah like the comment "As an Iowan.." advised we should always emphasize he gets more donations from military than anyone else. I think you cover a lot of great ground and keep them guessing until the end. I like it.

(maybe you can fold it in such a way they can't glance at the bottom of the page too easily) You know what would be really cool is to have a scratch off style of paper where the reader actually has to scratch off the silver gunk covering Ron's website.

***********

"I can confidently say" this can include THEM with US by saying

"We can be confident"

..Without the truth we have nothing

Thanks

I'll add about military donations. Actually, the last line is so small most people would need glasses.

"We can be confident" is good improvement.

Thanks a lot.

About the military donations

How would you word that?

And

I'd like to add something about saving SS and other social programs

Seems I can't think tonight--can you help me out?

I hope Dave Pedersen hasn't gone to bed yet

see above

nope i'm still awake. about

nope i'm still awake. about the introduction of the military factoid i would insert it right at the bottom on the end of the list subtitled "additional"

its a great grabber and can powerfully counter act any preconceived rejection of RP based on his determination to pull out of Iraq.

******************

In addition:
• He served for 5 years in the Air Force
• He is pro-life, pro-family, and pro-liberty
• He has never taken a government-paid junket
• He is not accepting a government pension
• He was voted the Taxpayer’s Best Friend
• Lobbyists ignore him because he can’t be bought

<<< He has received more donations from military personnel than any other Republican candidate>>>

Please take the time to investigate all candidates

If you get that "Republican" in there that helps too I think. I bracketed it with <<<>>> because I don't have the ability to make it with bullet dots like you have it in the list.

**************

his record on preserving the SS trust fund you can say "he has never voted to raid the SS trust fund"

record of 20 years in the House of Representatives and he has never voted:
• To raise taxes
• For an unbalanced budget

<<>>

and then later in the next segment about what he has promised to do you can say he will guard the ss trust fund

"guard" is a good solid way to say it i think.

As an Iowan..

As an Iowan I like alot about the letter. The part about the war and foreign policy should play well as small towns get hit the hardest by wars. Make sure you include the fact that he recieved the most donations from military personel, that is a very impressive fact and will keep people from seeing him as weak on defense or something like that. There are lots of old people here and focusing on how he'll keep SS and medicare afloat while still allowing people to have responsibility for themselves if they wish. At the straw poll there were literally lines and lines of the elderly following a few teenagers in Team Mitt shirts with signs that said follow me, so anything of interest to the elderly is going to be key in Iowa.

Here's Mine, feel free to use or change if needed

This was an emaill I sent to personal friends and family, being as such much would not apply or be useful in a hand written letter, other parts are redundant to you, my fellow Paul's and Paula's from slim jims and the like... would love your feedback as well

I know that most of you are used to me being the happy-go-lucky Jeff, but I have something I feel I must talk with you about. I know that this is Taboo. You shouldn’t talk about Politics, Jeff. However, since it has become apparent that I have become a parent, I now realize that I can not just sit idly by as our, and (son's name)’s fate, are decided. It is my duty as his father and as an American to become involved and to try to share with you some of the things I am learning.

I apologize in advance if I have offended any of you with this discussion. I thoroughly support the rights of each and every one of you to your opinions, and do not wish to ridicule or make light of your views. It is my hope that if I have been mislead, one of you will help to right my path. I will attempt to tread lightly.

My initial goal as I set forth was to try to find out which candidates (both Republican and Democrat) I would like to see on the Ballot when we vote in 2008. After the things that have happened in the last two elections, it is safe to say that the primaries carry more wait than they once did. If all we do is pay attention to one party, we will be stuck with the others party’s choice to run against, whether that is a Republican or a Democrat. Some people might call this hedging your bet. I believe it is fool hardy to think that one candidate/ party or another is unbeatable. I wont put all of (son's name)’s eggs in one basket.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God." Matth.5:9

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy'. But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." Matth.5:43-45

These are ideals that I was raised with. I am not so righteous as to say that I have always followed them, but they are how I plan to raise my son. Above and beyond all of my concerns in this coming election are the wars that we are finding ourselves in. I fear that if left on its current course, we will be in the throws of war with Iran, as well. We still are not finished in Iraq, nor Aphganistan. Today I hear in the news that Pakistan, which does have nuclear weapons has become a dictatorship. All of this leads me to fear for the legacy and future we are leaving for our children, nieces and nephews. (my son) is 1 year old, seventeen years will go by in an instant. Many of you have children that are older, meaning less time before they must sign up for selective service.

The war in Iraq has cost the People of the United States of America, $450,000,000,000, and this number is rising. But if you turn through the pages of the Wall Street Journal, you will find a disturbing trend. Defense contractors (such as: Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, to name a few among the Publicly traded contractors) are all posting higher than expected profits. We have all seen what is happening at the gas pump as the Oil companies also post higher than usual profits.

But, We the People (according to the Constitution), are left holding the Burden for this war and these profits. When We, the U.S. Government (according to A. Lincoln this is a government of the people, by the people, for the people) borrow these great sums of money, where does the money come from? Is there interest on these ‘loans?’ How much interest would accumulate on a number like $450,000,000,000? Who is really winning this war? Whose war are We fighting?

My biggest fear, however, is the loss of lives. Lives that no matter your religion, Our God has created. This is by far the greatest cost of this and all wars. We went to Iraq on the premise of Weapons of Mass Destruction, there were none. Our President has stated that no link was found between Saddam Hussein and Al Queda. Since we invaded there have been more than 75,000 Iraqi Civilian Casualties. These are men (fathers, brothers), women (mothers, sisters) and CHILDREN (SONS and DAUGHTERS). This war was unprovoked. Is this how We spread Democracy?

Closest to my heart are the lives of OUR OWN SONS AND DAUGHTERS. These brave men and women have shown the ultimate willingness to protect and serve US, our freedoms and liberty. We have already lost more than 3800 Americans in Iraq. There have also been more than 28,000 American Soldiers Wounded. It is time that We begin to protect and serve them.

We have been in Iraq (a third world country) for 5 years (counting only this current war) and the majority of the information I have gathered above has happened since we were told “Mission Accomplished.” In recent news, we are being told by Republican and Democrat alike that there is no likelihood of the U.S. leaving Iraq before 2013. That is 5 years from now. Can We afford 5 more years? (not to mention Iran)

Amongst the candidates running for President in 2008, there is one man who has received more campaign contributions from our Military men and women than any other. This gentleman is Dr. Ron Paul., our Congressman from Texas. Ron Paul proudly served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force during the 60’s. He is a man who has witnessed the horrors war. From the onset, Ron Paul voted against the war in Iraq.

Dr. Paul (OB/GYN) has delivered more than 4,000 babies. He and his wife are the proud parents of five children and have 17 grandchildren.

In 20 years as a Congressman, Dr. Paul never voted for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution. He is a man of true integrity, who is not swayed by lobbyists or backed by corporations. Here is a link to the U.S. Constitution, if you would like to know what sways this man’s decisions. http://www.archives.gov/national-archives-experience/charter... He presently serves on the House Committee on Financial Services and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Congressman Paul served on the House Banking committee, where he was a strong advocate for sound monetary policy and an outspoken critic of the Federal Reserve’s inflationary measures. He was an unwavering advocate of pro-life and pro-family values. Dr. Paul consistently voted to lower or abolish federal taxes, spending and regulation, and used his House seat to actively promote the return of government to its proper constitutional levels. Please note the committee’s on which he has served before deciding whether his ideas to end the IRS and Federal Reserve System are just foolish banter.

Brief Overview of Congressman Paul’s Record:He has never voted to raise taxes. He has never voted for an unbalanced budget. He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership. He has never voted to raise congressional pay. He has never taken a government-paid junket. He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch. He voted against the Patriot Act. He voted against regulating the Internet. He voted against the Iraq war. He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program. He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year. He introduces numerous pieces of substantive legislation each year, probably more than any single member of Congress.
I believe that all of the above shows that this man has a firm understanding of the principles our Founding Fathers intended when they created our Country and our Constitution. Ron Paul understands government, medicine, banking and finance, foreign relations, diplomacy and most importantly Liberty!
Liberty- freedom from arbitrary or despotic government or control, freedom from control, interference, obligation, restriction, hampering conditions, etc.; power or right of doing, thinking, speaking, etc., according to choice.
Lastly I invite you to watch this YouTube Video (there are thousands) about Dr. Paul. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG_HuFtP8w8
Thank you all for you time and patience. I would love to hear back from each and everyone of you. I am still looking for a Democratic candidate.
Love,
Jeff

I think you mean

"affiliated", not "affilitated", second sentence, also "committed" not "comitted"

He has committed to

He has committed to drastically decrease government spending, lower taxes and end inflationary policies.

It seems in this sentence your tense is inconsistent. There are several ways to change it. I suggest you say:

He is committed to drastically decreasing government spending, lowering taxes and ending inflationary policies.

This keeps it all in the present tense.

Using the word "drastically" is probably not advised. It sounds a bit scary and if there is any constant among the majority concerning our future it is fear. How about "significantly"?

or.. if you wish to reduce the number of words ending with "y" you can rephrase like this:

He is committed to a significant reduction in government spending, lowering our taxes and ending inflationary policies.

********************

Ron Paul is the only candidate that seems to be worried about the trillions of dollars in debt that our country owes to China, Europe and much of the rest of the world.

instead of "seems to be worried" try the more definite and less negative "who is truly concerned"

Ron Paul is the only candidate who is truly concerned about the trillions of dollars in debt that our country owes to China, Europe and much of the rest of the world.

*************

Ron Paul's voting record is that one thing which makes him so very electable. He can stand on his record like no other candidate. Ron Paul's voting record proves he is a statesman of integrity fully dedicated to our United States Constitution.

I like a lot about it

But (lol)
I wouldn't say that no one is guarding the border because we do have some border patrol there.

And please mention that Dr. Paul is the only candidate who by saving money overseas can save our social programs like SS and Medicare.
This is a very BIG thing with a lot of people. I heard 3 callers on C-Span Sunday morning say that they couldn't vote for Ron Paul because he wants to end SS.

How about gun ownership rights and opposing the North American Union, NAFTA, CAFTA, etc.? These are things easily understood unlike the money supply.

Where you mention Hillary, Romney and Judy you could just say "unlike most other candidates"

I really, really like the first paragraph. I commend you for what you are doing and I hope my comments are taken in the spirit they were given.

I don't like promoting the

I don't like promoting the North American Union issue, because as of right now, it doesn't exist, nobody knows about it, and talking about it sounds almost like a crazy conspiracy theory... Also a lot of people don't really understand what NAFTA and CAFTA are, or why they are bad.

I'm trying to target a broad audience, because I don't know who these people are or what they believe.

I can work something in about the second amendment, for sure, and I will definitely mention SS and Medicare.

I was a little hesitant to name other candidates, so I might just take that out, I didn't want to give the impression that I was claiming that Dr. Paul was the ONLY veteran among the candidates, as McCain also (obviously) served.
