Awesome experiment / optical illusion - please play along!

0 votes

This is a cool optical illusion I came across yesterday. I am left handed and was absolutely stuck seeing her spin clockwise, when usually I can flip optical illusions at will. My husband is a friggin' genius, I think. He watched it for about 30 seconds, and figured out how to flip the direction at will, told me his trick and it worked for me. Please try it and see if it works for you. Go check it out first, and try to make her switch directions. Then come back and read his trick, I will put some gibberish for space, then give the trick below. Go see if his trick works for you, too. Thanks - I hope this is seen as a fun diversion, not "trolling."

OK, try to think of a nice warm hug from your favorite dog or grandbaby, or something that you love dearly. THink how good it felt, and really enjoy that moment.

Now look at the reflection of her feet for a few moments, as you divide your age by 13, add 20% to that, then add 13, and subtract 20%.

Does she flip around for when when you change from emotive thought to math thought? She sure did for me, back and forth, and I was STUCK before he had me try it.

It is NOT an Optical Illusion. Random file array w/gif files.

It is NOT an Optical Illusion. Random file array makes model turn.
You can't will it to turn, nor is it an optical effect. If you want to believe it's an illusion, then you will wait for it to reverse direction & then reaffirm your belief that your mind made it reverse.
On October 30th, 2008 RPsupporter says:

The illusion is that people THINK it's an illusion because it's presented that way.

If you download the file you will find that the model can be made to spin clockwise or counterclockwise using a simple random number generator that will run the sequence of frames forward or backward in a random number of frames.

Depending upon your modem speed connection to that url, the model may turn slower or more rapidly. At some juncture it may appear to slow down before reversing direction. That certainly is a que that your are not witnessing an optical illustion.

Of course if you want to believe it's an optical illusion, that's fine. It appears that the animator intended you to believe that anyways.

I can find no other reason for contriving this animation other than to say she looks great in silhouette.

Later post:

I do flash animation and it would be fairly simple to create one of these so-called 'optical illusions' even though that is NOT what it is.

For example, imagine a clock or dial with one arm on it. You can make the arm go clockwise than stop it and make it go the other way. You can do this with a random number generator so that it changes direction in a random number of frames so that one cannot predict when it will change direction.

What I find amusing is that people want to believe that this is an illusion because they are apparently unfamiliar with random number generators.

If you have a screen saver with a fish tank view, the fish never appear to swim the same patterns because a random number generator is incorporated to prevent them from 'swimming' predictable cycles.

Of course you can 'believe' that the fish are magically swimming or that your mind has made them turn in the opposite direction. But that is not what is happening.

I wondered at first whether

I wondered at first whether it was just switching directions at a set interval or just randomly. Once I saw it was a .gif file, then I knew it wasn't switching randomly. And the fact that I saw it switch directions an irregular intervals meant that it probably was just an illusion and not really switching direction.

I found that if I looked not directly at the image, but a little bit off to the side so it was in my peripheral vision that I was able to "make" it switch back and forth. I would just watch the leg that was pointing outward and when it looked like it was going in front of the other leg I would make myself see it as going behind the other leg, and then the image "switched direction".

It was pretty neat.

As far as the list of functions described as left brain and right brain, I recognize myself as having the all of them from both sides. I think it's merely a choice as to whether you "use logic" or "use feelings", or focus on "details" or the "big picture", etc. I actively choose between the "left" or the "right" side from that list, depending on what I'm doing, and what perspective I want or think is appropriate.

And there's a lot of over-generalization, exaggeration, and pseudo-science around the idea of "left-brain/right-brain": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lateralization_of_brain_function

Left or right brain

monitor. Right click on the image and save the gif to your desktop. Go to your desktop properties and browse to image and set as desktop. Be sure to have position set to 'Tile".
Now you can keep track of what side of your brain you are burning out on the DP at any time, just by minimizing your browser. LOL

It spun right brain for me

It spun right brain for me at first, which IS me, and I could get it to spin the other way really easy..back and forth. Wish I could really use my left brain so easily, usually..was cool..

No matter what I do I cannot

No matter what I do I cannot get the girl to spin counter clockwise. Only clockwise all the time.

I decided to save the file and look deeper. It's an animated gif file. This is not a flash file, so it is not programmed. There is no random number generator capability within animated gif files. There are only frames and the amount of time between switching from one frame to the next.

I opened the file in a graphics design software program. There are 34 frames. Going one by one, there is no doubt that the motion is in a clockwise direction. There is not a single frame that goes counter clockwise in relation to the frame that came before it. Only clockwise.

So, why do so many view it moving counter-clockwise?

I'm not really sure, but I am beginning to believe that while the true motion is always clockwise the trick, or the illusion, is the counter-clockwise view. I do not believe that this "switch" has anything to do with right versus left brain usage.

I suppose there might be a few possibilities going on here...

One is that each time the webpage is loaded a different animated gif image is used. That would result in a variety of outcomes depending on which version of the animation you were looking at. But this would not explain why two people looking at the same animation would view it differently. I reloaded the page many times (to see if I could get the image to change), but it was always the same one. If we are viewing different animations, it's possible for the server to persistently show the same version to the same computer over and over no matter how many times it is refreshed. There are ways to beat even that, but I'm not going that far.

The other possibility, the more likely one, is that some people "miss" viewing some of the frames which changes their perception of it. I tried going from frame 1 to 3, 1 to 4, 1 to 5, etc, but I could not find a frame spread that caused the direction to appear to change (I could have tested more thoroughly, but did not want to do a full permutation on the set). I believe this is the more likely scenario with perceptions changing due to losing or missing some of the frames, causing a "confusion" or illusion to occur.

use this vid

cover all but her legs(scroll down or use your hand and cover all but the legs) and pause when her leg is left out in profile.

Then the trick is to imagine her spinning the other way, cause her leg can spin behind the other or in front. When you play, after some practice, you should get it.

It is easier once you have done it once, cause then you have memory of how it looks spinning the other way.

also, closing your eyes and imagining her spinning the other way, cause if you still look, it might be hard to turn her.

if you have trouble making her switch

scroll down or cover all but the legs...it´s easier to switch direction then...

also this video of her, if you pause when her leg is outstretched you can flip her anyway you want when you play again.

I made the mistake of watching the woman spinning again, while Obama's half hour commercial was on T.V. in the background. It was too much stimulus. Now I'm hearing voices in my head :-(

The voices are telling me that Obama will be a great leader and that Communism isn't so bad.

she turned clockwise at first but starring i could get her to go

All I have to do to make her change

is take my eyes down to her left side. Probably would work other places, but I didn't try. Interesting. Started out going counter.

I can make her go back and forth without turning around by looking off her screen to the left and then look over off the screen to the right down on the bottom.

it flips for me if I concentrate and focus beside it

first was only clockwise now I can flip pretty easy...

btw I am right handed..not thinking on anything but the image when I switch though

funny

/Mike

found a better way to make her switch faster

I squint(so I almost not see her) and focus her turning the other way... and there she goes :) it´s way easier clockwise though....
If I do not concentrate she never switch..

Mike: You are watching it flip on it's own.
