Thank you for this post...

Thank you Dr. Paul for making my act on what I already knew was right.

Paul (yes, Paul) in 2008: National Emergency
I know he has withdrawn his name, but please read my explanation at the link below. I do not think our financial system, and ultimately the economy are going to make it through next year. We need Ron Paul- he is the only well known candidate who actually understood what is happening, reported it to us, and took actions to stop it (HR 2755).
Whether it will count or not, and likely I will have to use a paper ballot, I intend at this time to write in Ron Paul. If enough people do it, it will send a message to the electoral college. If the financial system goes into the next phase of collapse by Dec. 15th (quite possible), America and the electoral college may wake up.
Neither McCain nor Obama had anything to say on the financial collapse (other than a few things about Fannie and housing problems) until October 2008. There is a huge disconnect here, and I do not trust it.
This link contains my explanation, plus a letter to Ron Paul:

You are SO correct!
Great video and your choice is an excellent and principled one.
I too am voting Baldwin because a Ron Paul write-in won't be counted in my state (WA).
My main issue IS foreign policy and the Constitution Party passes my test. Plus Baldwin had the guts to slam the rotted Federal Reserve.
I was going to support Barr but I can't forgive what he did to Dr. Paul.

I have to agree with what
I have to agree with what Jack Hunter said in the video. I have the same litmus test as he does. If a candidate(whether for president, senator, representative, mayor, sheriff, city council, etc.) is pro-amnesty for illegal aliens and he doesn't seem to care too much about stopping illegal immigration/enforcing laws against illegal immigration, he will never get my vote. Ron Paul and Chuck Baldwin both support enforcing current laws on illegal immigration, securing the border and opposing any form of amnesty/path to citizenship for illegal aliens.

I think we've been through
I think we've been through this several times before. Being opposed to amnesty for illegal aliens and being opposed to illegal immigration like Ron Paul is, does not make one a bigot or make one hateful or fearful of mexicans. Throwing out the race card to attack people who oppose illegal immigration and amnesty for illegal aliens is getting old(that goes for you too Jesse Ventura).
Immigrant here....
Hey there.... I have some very personal opinnions on immigration since I have come here from Europe in 1989 ( btw -I'm not Marine1990 - I'm his wife...LOL). What's very to hard to hear is all the "beating up" on immigrants in general. Anytime the country is in crisis mode - it's immigrants fault. My husband and I often watch the news and just wait till a problem gets blamed on immigration. We are never desapointed.
So here are few problems I see with this issue:
1) Lack of education on how immigration works. The laws are so complicated that in many case it leads to simple lack of understanding of the law - not language barrier. The immigrants who enter legally fall victim to misinformation. I.e. getting different info from the same immigration office which leads to missing a date for an application. There is no way in immigration law to for example pay fine for being late a day and continue to be registered or continue the application process. We have grace period in most institutions ( or at least e get "notice" that something is about go "wrong") but not in immigration law. Through that we create illegal immigrants out of people we wnt to attract here.
2) Speaking of attracting people here. Through Patriot Act we managed to accomplish one thing - cut the immigration from countries we are friends with. The immigrants "we want" who are educated ( education paid by another country - free and ready work force coming our way) in most cases come here for:
a) they visited on vacation and want to try living here.
b) looking for "white collar" opportunities and bringing new ideas that make our country great.
Those people are not going to "beg" to come here. And some will not stay ( legal or not) if not wanted.
3) You would be surprised that some illegal immigrants do pay taxes.
I'll give you an example of a family I know. They entered legally, got ss#, driver's license...etc etc. Missed a date of an application because of two different answers they got from immigation officals. Their status changed to illegal. They have been here 10 years, they started family, have jobs pay taxes - and keep low profile. Why? Because if they leave they will have no way to return to the country they now call home. The gov has no problem excepting their tax money, yet calls them criminals. How sad.
If they go back - they will go to nothing. Not because that country is poor, but rather because they wouldn't know where to get started there. Their child doesn't speak their natve language - english is spoken at home.
Now, why do we want to deport them?
4) They would pay the fine, back taxes and get registered to stay. The ones that wouldn't are the ones that we can then go and chase and deport. But there has to be a way for people who are not a threat to us regain their status. Rest is fair game.
5) Stop using people like me ( who entered legally) as the ones who supposedely want them to stand in line. I know how awful immigration law is and understand that some can get caught up in it. By all means give them a way to repair their status.
6) I am for securing both borders. No one should have an easy access, but you have adjust the laws to encourage legal immigration. Don't make it so complicated that an average college graduate cannot figure out what to do.
7) I am all for English being the national language. This is where the fairness goes out the window for me. There is no excuse for not learning it. And no one can claim they were surprised they spoke English here after entering this country. I know for a fact Hispanic population is very much capable learning another language - check out Chicago - in the polish area you will see a lot of Hispanic population speaking Polish.
Many non-profits offer free english classes and there is no better way for kids to learn then throw them right into english speaking school. They are like sponges - they pick it up in no time.
8) Immigrants are just like any other population - we too have bad apples. But it doesn't represent all of us.
9) Yes, there is a racial factor in the attitude toward immigration. No one assumes I'm an immigrant untl I open my mouth and they hear an accent. The comments I get sometimes are "we need more immigrants like you". Well "you" falls under the same laws as others. LOL If a Canadian wants to immigrate here she/he faces the same problems as people from Europe or Latin America, or Mexico for that matter.
10) Last but not least - the bad guys that come here to hurt us - will use the legal ways and you will never see them coming. We as a country have to do some soul searching and figure out why we hate the immigrants as much as we do now. Jobs, right? I beg you different - GM will get the bailout money ( 50 billion) only to open a brand new plant with lots of jobs in........Russia.
Anyway....I'm sorry for the long post. There is so much more I could say and I wish I could convey how unbearably difficult the process of immigrating is....but it would take too long.
I don't beat up on legal
I don't beat up on legal immigrants, but I do speak out against illegal immigration. And I would be speaking out aganst illegal immigration even if the economy was good, and I know many others would be too, and it has nothing to do with racism, xenophobia, etc. The laws are there for a reason. They should be enforced. I might agree the legal immigration process needs some work(backlogs are the biggest problem because not enough staff are assigned to handle it).
You personally may not be angry at seeing illegal immigrants cheat the system, but I have heard many other legal immigrants speak out against illegal immigration and I don't blame them for being angry. Legal immigrants should not be punished for obeying the law, and if you allow illegal immigration in high numbers, you are punishing legal immigrants, making them angry and feel like fools because they waited in line for a long time and obeyed the laws, when they could have just snuck in like so many others do and get away with it. How do you think people feel who are waiting in line to come to America, obeying our laws, and they see hundreds of thousands every year sneaking in illegally? Its got to be similar to people after a devastating hurricane, waiting for fresh water handed out the back of an 18 wheeler, people standing in line all day, tired, hungry and thirsty, obeying the rules, and then some people cheat and cut to the front of the line. Most people get angry when they see people cheat like that to get ahead of them, and who can blame them?
You are advocating amnesty for illegal aliens. Ron Paul has spoken out against that and I agree with him. If we grant amnesty again(we did before in 1986 and it was a disaster causing increased illegal immigration), illegal immigration will increase again because they want to get in on amnesty too. Amnesty is bad policy.
And out of curiousity, were you aware we take in over 1 million legal immigrants per year? Do you feel that number is too low? I don't.
Count the Cost..
Sorry for the confusion - my wife and I both use this login ID. This time it's me. I agree that illegal immigration is a huge problem - one that needs to be solved.
However, there are somewhere between 12 and 20 million undocumented persons living in the US today. If we assume that finding them, identifying them, providing some measure of due process, detention, guards etc will cost approximately $10K per person, then that's potentially $200B for you and me to pay. I'm getting sick and tired of paying for Uncle Sam's screw ups and negligence - how about you?
Here's my thought - a 3 pronged approach.
1) Make it a LOT harder to get in illegally. This means physically securing the border of course.
2) Make it a LOT easier to get in legally. This means yet another immigration reform act - we tried in 1924, 1956, and 1986, and somehow we still haven't quite got it. Having been through this process w/ my wife, I can tell you it's an incredibly broken (and corrupt) process - it drastically needs improvement. Entering legally should become the "path of least resistance" if we complete steps one and two correctly - the net result should be that regardless of the number trying to enter, the vast majority should find it much easier to follow the legal path.
3) Now that we've completed steps one and two, we have to figure out what to do with the ones already here. My suggestion would be to open up a 180 day window, and offer them the chance to report voluntarily to the nearest immigration office. No deportations, the only consequence will be that you fill out a form essentially pleading guilty to a misdeeanor, and a $2000 fine per peson. You walk out with papers in hand correcting your status to legal, and you're allowed to live and work lawfully in the USA. If 80% of them take advantage of the program, you'll have generated $32B in new revenue instead of a new $200B expense.
What to do with that $32B? Well, there's approx 6000 miles of border on the north and south. As long as you can keep expenses down to 5 million per mile, you have more than enough to pay for that physical security we talked about in step 1.
Thoughts?
Hi, thanks for the reply.
Hi, thanks for the reply. Here are my thoughts to what you said. Unfortunately, I think you are falling into the Bush, McCain, Obama trap in thinking there are only two solutions that they put forth. Either deport them all, or grant them all amnesty(both Obama, McCain and Bush all wanted amnesty, Ron Paul said they were all wrong and amnesty was not good policy, as breaking the laws should not be rewarded). There is a third way that is better, and much cheaper than deporting them all. I'm not saying stop deportations, deportations should continue as they have been for decades, but they could step it up a bit, perhaps close to double what it is now, from 200 something thousand per year to close to 500 thousand per year.
You said there are between 12 and 20 million, I don't believe the 12 million number(and no one else I know who's really studied this issues believes the 12 million number either that Bush, McCain and Obama talk about to make the problem sound less serious than it is), because of a report that said in 2005 that the number was close to 20 million, and now almost 4 years later, its several million higher. The link to the article is below.
I made a long post on illegal immigration awhile back, what I need to do is just repost it here for you, it will save me a lot of time from having to repeat myself and take time to write it all down again. Here it is
Ron Paul voted for legislation a couple years ago(HR 4437)that would have ended sanctuary cities all across the U.S. due to tough penalties for those cities who disobeyed the law(sanctuary cities were made illegal in 1996, but there was no penalty associated with it, so sanctuary cities continue to exist in clear violation of federal law) and would have caused most illegal aliens to leave the country on their own due to increased enforcement of laws(Bush was doing a terrible job of enforcing laws against illegal immigration, no better than Clinton before him and states that have passed anti-illegal immigration legislation like Arizona, Oklahoma and Georgia have had some success in causing illegal aliens to leave the state on their own, even though they didn't enforce their laws very well).
http://www.judicialwatch.org/blog/mexico-complains-too-many-...
The house passed the HR 4437 legislation, but idiots in the senate blocked it from ever coming to a vote.
Some would argue, its all about welfare, stop welfare and thats all thats needed. But there is more to it than that, as you'll see in the links below. Cutting off welfare is not enough.
If you want to make a difference, you can sign up with NumbersUSA. They are non-partisan, and Ron Paul is rated well by them at a B+, they rate all members of congress and the senate, so you can see who is pro-illegal immigration and who is not, who is pro amnesty for illegal aliens and who is not. Vote out all the pro-illegal immigration and pro-amnesty politicians, and the problems of illegal immigration will become a thing of the past.

A Zogby poll revealed that 58% of Mexicans believe that the southwest United States belongs to Mexico. That probably explains why 60% of Mexicans also believe there should be no border control between Mexico and the U.S.(it makes it easier for them to take back U.S. land through illegal immigration that they feel belongs to them)

All the above info is just the tip of the iceberg, but I don't have time to post it all.
I'd say the solution is more simple than people make it out to be, if the magnets that draw illegal aliens here are removed, illegal aliens won't bother to come any more in any significant numbers. Some of the main magnets are
1. Weak enforcement of laws against illegal immigration and insufficient number of border guards(Long time veteran border patrol say we need at least double the number we have now, after the magnets that draw illegal aliens here are removed).
2. Being able to work here illegally(for those who don't know, its illegal for employers to employ illegal aliens), often under the table without paying any taxes.
3. Getting welfare here illegally. Yes, its true that illegal aliens are not supposed to get welfare(due to a 1996 law), and some have wrongly claimed that illegal aliens do not and cannot take advantage of welfare due to it being illegal, but they CAN and DO get welfare and the cost is massive. Here is the cost for just one county in California, imagine the cost for the entire U.S.?
http://www.the-signal.com/news/archive/995/
4. Illegal aliens being able to have children here and have their children become automatic U.S. citizens, which makes them harder to deport. Ron Paul has spoken out about this many times. Return the 14th amendment back to its original intent(subject to the jurisdiction thereof meaning not subject to another countries jurisdiction, in other words not being a citizen of another country and being a non-citizen in the U.S., this could be done by congress using its section 5 powers or by constitutional amendment or by bringing a direct challenge to the supreme court to get them to clarify the citizenship clause of the 14th amendment and return it back to its original intent).
So, if those magnets that draw illegal aliens here were removed or corrected, then most illegal aliens currently here would leave the country on their own because they could no longer afford to stay here(no amnesty needed and no need to stop them at the border if they try to leave, better to let them leave on their own than have to deport them and save a ton of money), and few would try to come here illegally in the future. Making english the official language of the U.S. would help a lot too, and Ron Paul is in favor of that.

Hi, it's the wife again....LOL
I'll let my husband write when he wakes up, but here are few of my thoughts. And btw - thanks for writing, it is very refreshing to talk to someone who has some actual knowledge on the subject.
To be honest with you - I agree with a lot what you had to say. I don't like a total amnesty and I don't like total deportation. I don't think the subject is all balck and white. There are gray areas. I have a personal belief that the gray area is where all the immigrants that we want here fall into.
I completely agree with your "four magnets" that attract illegal immigration. However we have to do more than just removing the magnets - we need to then fix our laws and make it easier to come legally. The way that our laws is structured right now - it does make it easier to simply run across the border. Although in all honesty I would love to just bypass and remove Mexico from our conversation, because I don't think that doing anything will solve that problem. At this point I think it is almost "cultural" to run across the southern border. When the country I come from had that problem, the gov round them (eastern europe) all up and dropped them off across the border- that wouldn't fly here.
My husband was stationed in Japan years ago and I was in the "perminant residency" status ( all rights except to vote and bear arms). On our way back to US we got stopped at the border crossing ( airport) and I was held back because my residency card was expired ( now keep in mind I was always told that's not a problem since my husband was active duty and all expiration dates are suspended due to lack of immigration office on Okinawa, until we get to continental US). The hell we had to go through in order to prevent deportation was unbelievable - including trying to prove we are together ( 2 kids). It was humiliating to have some guy watch us up close and make sure we "acted" like a married couple. Our whole lives where in one person's hands.
In another incident I was treated like "cattle" at an immigration office.
Needless to say the system is so broken, that it has discouraged me from dealing with them and obtaining my citizenship for 12 years after I was eligable for it. And all of it was done to a legal immigrant - and one that didn't marry or have kids to stay here.
Until we fix the laws to begin with we are gonna have only one kind of immigrant - the one that runs across the border, because they have nothing to loose.
I think that we have a huge need to encourage immigration from developed countries. The law however makes it almost immpossible for anyone to make US their home unless they have the following "reasons" to stay:
a) sponsored by family
b) sponsored by employer - and that is very difficult - costly and time consuming for the employer.
c) asylum from prosecution based on religion or political views
The sponsorship through family does not include a baby that was born here. That was done away with long time ago. Our gov will deport a family with a baby who is US citizen. That citizen when he/she is 18 can return ( after completing paperwork) and in time sponsor and bring parents here.
There is no more running across the border to have a baby and stay here legally.
Now, let's say a guy from England comes here on vacation and falls in love with our great country and wants to stay here. If he has no family here - too bad so sad - he has no ligit reason for it. That's the attitude of our immigration. He can go and try to apply - the process is so dfficult and long - it might take him years to get a "no". LOL
On the other hand if you have a guy from Cuba come here on a boat and just steps on our land he gets automatic asylum. And fast too.
What does our gov encourage? I'd get a boat! LOL
The gray area: what do you do with immigrants who came here legally and fell into "illegal" status? They are not many millions of them, but we do have some that tried to do everything the right way. Not talking about the ones who came legally and had the intention in the first place to just stay and not cooperate with the system. I'm talking about the ones who can proof that:
a) they pay taxes
b) haven't taken advantage of welfare or unemployment (although if they paid taxes they should be able to draw unemployment).
To me allowing them to return to previous status, to repair mistake is not a "reward" for breaking the law. Especially if the law enforcement officials are the ones who gave them the wrong info. Maybe doing a better training would be the answer. But I do know of families who feel "cheated" by the system.
Here is another example:
Your status is in good standing. You ask for permission to stay here for good, fill out the paperwork and send it off. The answer comes back that you are to stay where you are and wait till they tell you "yes" or "no". You wait. If you are lucky, in few months you get an answer and it says: " we are glad to give you a permission to stay, however, because at this point your visa has expired you are no longer eligable to apply. Please pack up and leave within 30 days". So, what do we do with people like this? Do you think that they are as bad as the ones who ran across the border? Many like these end up just staying and contunueing their live here, they work they pay taxes. They are not criminals - in my opinnion they fell victim to a broken system.
So, I agree that the 4 magnets have to be implemented. But is there room for negotiation for people in what I consider the "gray area"? Do we really not want them here? They do contribute and they love this country. They are families like mine and yours, why not? I don't believe they would feel rewarded by us, I can bet they already feel punished.
Anyway, I hope I didn't write to much. Hope you are having a good Veteran's Day.
Quick correction....
When I talk about allowing them to repair status, I don't mean to hand them a residency ( which would be an amnesty) - I mean to set them back to the legal status that they began with. I.E. set them back to the point where their visa was still valid and allow them to apply for residency if they qualify. Assuming the law will be fixed at this point, so they don't face the same problem all over again. The "path" I'm talking about is not the reward that many speak of, but rather a correction to allow them to restart the process.
Hi, thanks for the reply
Hi, thanks for the reply again. I realize the legal immigration process needs some work, and agree when you said we should take in more legal immigrants from developed countries(instead of taking in so many ones from poor countries who have little in the way of education or job skills I presume)not saying it doesn't. For one thing there is a huge backlog of applications(millions) and not enough staff to handle it, so that is one reason why there is a long wait. Ron Paul talked about the need to fix the legal immigration system, to make it more streamlined and easier. I don't know the exact details of what his plan was for fixing the legal immigration process, but I do agree it needs work.
I realize that there are some people who didn't cross a border illegally, but came on visa and overstayed their visa, sometime for what they felt were justified reasons, but many others came on visa with no intenet of ever leaving(another form of illegal immigration, overstaying your visa on purpose in the hopes you will get amnesty, just like people who sneak across the borders illegally in the hopes of getting amnesty too).
You said it was humiliating after your residency card was expired and you had to go before immigration officials who wanted to make sure you were actually married. Please understand, there is a huge problem with marriage fraud in our immigration system here in the U.S. A U.S. citizen will say that he/she married a citizen of another country, to make that person a U.S. citizen(often for a cash reward from the non-citizen). Sometimes they get caught using that scam, other times they don't. But please don't take it personally or get offended by it, the person was probably just doing their job, and had probably dealt with many other cases of marriage fraud where two people pretend to be married when they are not. They can be very convincing and adamant about it too, so it takes a very astute and aware person to be able to see through the fraud, even fraud that looks convincing.
You said: "Until we fix the laws to begin with we are gonna have only one kind of immigrant - the one that runs across the border..."
I'd have to disagree on that part, we have millions of legal immigrants in this country and we takein over a million legal immigrants per year. If the legal immigration system was as broken as you make it out to be, we would have far fewer legal immigrants and far more illegal immigrants.
But I do agree to some extent that if it was easier to legally immigrate to this country(but not too easy, some rules and regulations have to be followed and are there for good reasons), then less people would attempt to come here illegally, but that alone wouldn't solve the problem, even if it was made easier, and no more backlogs in the immigration system, people would still come illegally unless we removed the magnets I talked about.
You spoke of only 3 reasons to be able to get into the U.S. legally. There are 2 others that I am aware of. Marriage is one way, if a U.S. citizen marries a citizen of another country, they can become a citizen of the U.S.
You might say that falls under "sponsored by family", but some might assume sponsored by family means bringing in aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, etc. The other way is if a citizen of a foreign country comes here as an investor or a businessman who wants to open a business or improve an existing business, that is another way that people can come legally. Of course those last options are not available to all, only those who are well off financially can do that.
You said there is no more running across a border to have a baby to stay illegally. However, running across the border illegally and having a baby means their child is automatically considered a U.S. citizen(due to a mis-interpretation of the citizenship clause of the 14th amendment, the 14th amendment was never intended to give automatic citizenship to children of illegal aliens)and then that baby is eligible for all kinds of welfare benefits, which makes it easier for he illegal aliens who had the baby to stay in the U.S., and even if they are caught and deported, they can leave their baby behind with relatives or friends or let the state handle it, and then 18 years later, their child can bring them back into the country and they can become citizens. I'd call that a form of amnesty for parents who broke the law on purpose to take advantage of our laws. Already, millions have illegally taken advantage of that loophole and we need to put a stop to that.
Its true, if someone from england comes here on a visa, he has no right to stay for good just because he wants to. If he wants to, he should leave when his visa expires(or get a job with an employer with a green card before his visa runs out), and then work to become a citizen the legal way even though its easier and mre tempting to break the law, just like in that example I talked about previously, in a natural disaster situation where people in the U.S. are waiting in long lines all day long to get fresh water who are thirsty and hungry and tired, some may say its too hard to wait in line, that they need to cheat to get ahead to the front of the line, but cheating to get ahead makes those waiting in line behind angry and upset and they will want to make you get back in line or else its unfair to all the others who are patiently waiting and obeying the rules. Just as there is a finite amount of space in this country, each time an illegal alien comes here, that means less space for a legal immigrant who is obeying our laws and waiting to come legally, and one day in the not too distant future(decades perhaps, want to take a guess as to what U.S. poplation could be in the year 2100, which is only decades away?), the U.S. may be so overcrowded that we no longer want people to come here in any significant numbers any more due to crushing overpopulation and pollution problems like China is dealing with.
I believe it was Bill Clinton who put the Cuba policy into place, that if a cuban comes to the U.S. illegally and is caught at sea, they are deported, if they make it onto U.S. soil, then they get asylum and are allowed to stay. I think you can guess why cubans get asylum because the U.S. government sees Cuba as an oppresive communist dictatorship who throws people in prison for many years if they dare speak out against Cuba's policies. But I don't agree with that strange policy, deport them if caught at sea, let them stay if they set foot on U.S. soil. I think they should either always deport them or always let them stay, not some wishywashy policy that doesn't make much sense like it is now. In fact, I read an article which said that many Cubans are not bothering to try to cross the sea into the U.S. any more, they are heading straight for Mexico, and then travel through Mexico to get to the U.S. to get automatic asylum that way. I also heard that Castro figured out a way to send all his serious criminals and mental patients to get asylum, so he wouldn't have to deal with the cost of housing them in prisons or mental institutions. Some have theorized that thats part of the cause of why the crime rate has been high in Miami Florida.
You asked, what do we do with people who came to the U.S. legally but fell into legal status? Well, as I said before, many have come here legally, but had no intentions of ever leaving when they were supposed to, beaking the law and becoming illegal aliens with the hopes they'll get in on another amnesty. So we have to keep those millions of illegal aliens in mind, because we should not allow them to get amnesty. It really doesn't matter if they are working here illegally or paying taxes. They shouldn't get amnesty. On the other hand, I can understand someone who came here with good intentions, who planned to stay a limited time as the law allows, and then something happened like they got injured or sick or lost all their money somehow and can no longer leave and then overstay their visa and become illegal. I have sympathy for them. But how do you seperate the people who became illegal unintentionally, to those who became illegal intentionally? If you allow people who came on visa and overstayed and are now illegal to adjust their status, that opens the door to massive fraud, people wanting to become legal who make up a fake story to be allowed to stay, when in reality they could have been one of millions who came here legally for a limited time, but did not leave when they were required to and became illegal because they had no intentions of ever leaving in the hopes they would be able to lay low and avoid law enforcement until another amnesty was passed. If there were some way that massive fraud like that could be prevented, I might be sympathetic to the idea, but in the last big amnesty we had in 1986, there was massive fraud and a massive amount of people got amnesty who weren't eligible under the law. Even if you don't call it amnesty, and call it status adjustment to give people who came legally but became illegal somehow an extension, that gives people who purposely broke the law the chance to get extensions too, and the chance to remain in the country permanently, by the millions(this is what makes it so tough and hard to deal with, because we are talking about millions of people who could take advantage of this, if it was a much smaller number of people, then it wouldn't be such a big deal), unless you can figure out how to prevent massive fraud(people getting their status adjusted who intentionally became illegall, not just becoming illegal through no fault of their own).
Anyway, I hope you are having a good veteran's day too.
"want to take a guess as to
"want to take a guess as to what U.S. poplation could be in the year 2100, which is only decades away?"
Yeah, don't scare me! LOL I think I read an article somewhere what our population is going to look like in 2046....2100 is very concerning. Especially that I have read about Maxican gov still believing part of our country belongs to them and pretty much overpopulating the southern states in order to later have enough voting power. Might be a conspiracy theory, but the longer I live the more possible those theories seem to be.
I, like you, have a huge concern for this country. And although immigration is a subject close to my heart, it is not my priority in what this country needs.
I supposed what really surprises me ( and maybe it shouldn't) is people's attitude toward immigrants when things go wrong. And most are not as knowledgable about the subject as you are. They put us all in one category. I have a hard time excusing ignorance and lack of self education on any subject. People have an easy access to information these days - yet they lack the want to learn. It is most obvious during elections with straight party voting - regardless of whether or not the canditate deserves a vote. They lack the understanding how our goverment works and hang all their hopes on the president who doesn't have as much power as they think ( except that he/she can make a huge mess due to executive powers).
Anyway....back on a subject now. Yes, I do have an idea how to seperate the "intentions" of people who come here legally! :)
Being an immigrant, I know both kinds. And there is quite a difference in the way the handle things: some hide and some don't. The ones who tried to do everything the right way and fell into the "gray area" don't hide. Let's for example take the family I spoke of before. If the gov wanted to deport them - they are very easy to find. They have a paper trail. They have a proof of communication with immigration, they do pay taxes, they still live at the same address the immigration has them listed at. They don't run, they don't hide, they are an open book. On the other hand, the ones who simply came here with intention to stay, allow the visa to expire and have no communication with immigration offcials. They also never had or have intentions of paying taxes. They work the system. Their is a huge difference in the attitudes - in example taking advantage of welfare or other support networks design to help our citizens. The people I know of, although they could, they refuse to take advantage of it, because they do have a hope that some day they can show their intentions and be proud to say they weren't leaches but rather contributors to this country's wellbeing. Since they have ss## it would be easy to check if they paid taxes and if they drew welfare. The rest of papers they can provide.
If we allowed a period of time for these people to come forward without the fear of deportation and have them bear the responsibility of proof by listing what they need to have to show intentions - it would make a huge difference in their lives and I hope many citizens wouldn't have a problem with readjusting their status. I would hope anyway. The rest would be quite aware they could never proof they paid taxes (i.e) if they didn't. You could weed through the immigrants very fast. After the period of time expires - by all means fund the immigration department and deport.
I honestly think that the reason my friends didn't get deported yet is because the immigration has a bigger problem to deal with than people who are not drug dealers and pay taxes. LOL And I agree. If the change in immigration is not coming anytime soon, then I hope they will focus on bad guys first.
I also wanted to touch up on a subject of investor immigrants. I didn't list it as a legit way of staying here for the following reasons:
1) I think it's buying your status - money doesn't make these people better than the rest, yet they fall into the "special" category. I can't remember what the numbers were, but I believe it goes something like this:
a) you have to have min. 1 mil invested here or
b) 500K invested in a company which is about to go under and you will save min 7 jobs..... ( it's been a while since I looked)
I think it's a great idea to have people invest in our country, but here is what is wrong with it. These people, because of their financial status go through a lot less of a scrutiny than your regular person. The company they are investing in gets looked into to make sure he/she will be really saving it. I see this whole idea as asking for trouble. If I was a terrorist this would be a sweet way to get it. We all know they get funding so 1 mil is really peanuts. And how hard would it be to have people friendly to terrorists start a company with min 7 people and then drive it under? Before you kow it, someone comes to save it - and the rest is history. When it comes to money - our system seems to go blind. There are way to many loop holes in that, and maybe it is on purpose to encourage investments here. Although I see more of investment going out of this country than I see coming in. It's time to close this loop hole.
Now, about the ficticious guys from England weve been talking about.LOL If he wants to stay - he can't just get a job. He has to ask for change of status and then find an emplyer who wants to sponsor him. Employer has to proof to the gov that he could not find anyone here in US to fill the position and then they can apply to keep him here. If all goes well total of 18 mos. ( keeping in mind that very few categories of jobs are allowed - your regular guy who is i.e. hard working construction worker who thinks this country is the best thing since sliced bread - has no chance). The bottom line - he ain't sticking aroud to find out if he can. Too long. Just like you said the lines have to go away. And what I meant by saying about only certain kind of imigrant remaining is exactly this: that guy we want - he is not gonna beg or wait - he has a life and can make it just fine where he came from - he just wanted to try and got discouraged.
Last thing ( I promise). Marrying someone for the green card ( btw it's pink not green LOL). I have seen of much of it since I was a military spouse. Especially when we lived in Japan - had a lot of girls from Philipines and Korea marry guys. I don't even remember how many times my husband had to go and console a marine when he got home from deployment only to find his house empty and divorce papers on the table. The 5 years to qualify for citizenship was up so the wife left. Very sad. These are the people who give us all bad name. I'm not sure how to fix it. You can't take the citizeship away, nor should we be able to. There might be legit reason a wife leaves only to have a husband make a false claim to take her citizenship away - we would be playing with fire.
Anyway - big problem, lots of ideas, you think anyone will actually listen? LOL Or will politicians just follow people fears in order to get elected? Hmm..I think I know the answer.LOL
You're right.
I'm sorry I called anyone here a bigot. Fear of Mexicans? Not backing off that one. I never had a Mexican steal MY job, how bout you?

If you are saying anyone who
If you are saying anyone who opposes amnesty for illegal aliens and opposes illegal immigration fears Mexicans, than you are saying Ron Paul fears Mexicans too. I don't fear any race of people and I don't believe Ron Paul does either.
Also, keep this in mind, both Ron Paul and I don't have a problem with legal immigration, no do we favor ending it for good,no matter what the race of the legal immigrants may be. Someone who really fears Mexicans/hispanics would want to stop all immigration from latin American countries forever and would favor havng all legal hispanic immigrants leave the country, and neither I nor Ron Paul favor that.
And who cares if you personally never had a mexican take your job because they are always willing to work for less than a citizen will, its happened to many other American citizens over the years, especially poor lower class citizens.
