Submitted by StaxBrix on Sun, 11/02/2008 - 05:21QUITO (AFP) – The US Central Intelligence Agency had “full knowledge” of the deadly Colombian raid March 1 on a FARC rebel camp inside Ecuador that led to a rupture in ties between Bogota and Quito, Ecuador’s Defense Minister Javier Ponce said. The CIA “had full knowledge of what was happening in Angostura,” the border area in Ecuador where the attack took place, Ponce said while presenting the results of an official investigation into the suspected infiltration of Ecuador’s armed forces by US intelligence agents. Investigators “even detected a call by the CIA on the morning of March 1 announcing the attack in Angostura,” the minister added. Authorities suspected that the incursion — decried by the Organization of American States as a Colombian “premeditated violation” of Ecuadoran sovereignty — relied on support from a US aircraft assigned to joint US-Ecuador anti-drug missions from a US Former Operating Location (FOL) in Manta, Ecuador, he said.

I have property
in Ecuador. My daughter and son in law are moving there permanently. We will be visiting the beginning of January. Interesting stuff. One of the reasons I like Ecuador is that the president doesn't take bullying and doesn't care what Bush or Rice or anyone else thinks of him. He is a very interesting guy.

CHIMORE, Bolivia (Reuters) - Bolivia's leftist President Evo Morales accused U.S. anti-drug agents of spying on Saturday, and barred them from fighting cocaine traffickers in the Andean country until further notice.
"There were DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) agents that were doing political espionage, ... financing criminal groups so that they could act against authorities, even the president," Morales said.
Morales accused the DEA of maintaining ties with anti-government groups that staged violent protests in eastern and central regions governed by the opposition in September. He said the organization's actions amounted to conspiracy.

US Navy intercepts missile shot from Hawaii base

HONOLULU (AP) -- U.S. Navy officials say one of two short-range ballistic missiles shot from a military facility in Hawaii in a defense system test was hit by an interceptor missile fired from a Navy ship.
Vice Adm. Samuel J. Locklear says Saturday's trial marked the first time that the Navy - rather than the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency - oversaw the firing of a so-called Standard Missile-3 interceptor against a ballistic missile target.
The San Diego-based U.S. Third Fleet had command and control of the mission, in which two target missiles were fired from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai island.
An SM-3 fired from the USS Paul Hamilton directly hit the first target missile. Another ship, the USS Hopper, failed to intercept the second target missile that was fired.
