NY Voter - "Write - in" Question.

I would vote for Chuck Baldwin, but he's not on the ballot in NY.
How do I Write him in? On our voting machines, there is no "writing" being done. You just flip a switch and then pull a lever. Been looking online but can't figure out what to do.
Also,
A friend of mine told me that his mother used to work at the polling station and that they throw out the Write-In votes and don't even record them unless it's a significant amount. Is this true?
If this is so, I guess it'd be better to vote for one of the other 3rd party candidates.
