What's Wrong With Massachusetts (North Dakota too)?

0 votes

I know people are asleep - but come on! Almost 70% vote to keep paying income tax - one of the most tax burden states in the union wants to keep paying income tax - are they crazy!

I am sad to admit that I grew up in MA... I was hoping this would be the next great Boston Tea Party, but alas, the sheep will continue to follow...

Let's hope North Dakota can do a better job...

*** UPDATE ***

OK, it's official, I think Americans just want to keep paying taxes - ND couldn't get it passed either...

Taxachusetts sux.

Taxachusetts sux.

I live here and I will tell you

Unions, teachers, welfare recipients, public employees, make up alot of the votes. But also well to do families voted no on question 1. Because of all the fear mongering going on. The teachers union spent 5 million to defeat it. this is a socialist state

And

whoever lead the campaign to abolish income taxes in those states is an idiot. Why? All they had to do was use other states that have NO income taxes as their example and answer to the fear tactics used.

Florida does NOT have a state income tax and we have some of the best roads in America. Our fire and sheriff are some of the best funded and our infrastructure has shined during emergencies. Need some examples?

Hurricanes, hurricanes, hurricanes - Sure FEMA was called in on some of them but not because the people called FEMA in. You had more ordinary people go to Punta Gorda for Hurricane Charlie just to lend a helping hand. Florida is proof - because for the most part - people here lend helping hands to neighbors Before government even arrives.

Center For Small Government...

Headed by Carla Howell and Michael Cloud were the ones who spearheaded the movement to abolish the State income tax in Taxachusettes.

Well,

Florida and Mass or Florida and North Dakota may not be a fair comparison. Remember, Florida doesn't need thousands of snowplows every winter. One year we had over 25 plowable snowstorms. That adds a lot of extra cost to the state budget.

Florida doesn't have as many labor unions either like Mass does. They can build a bridge in Florida in six months, in Mass, it takes 2 years.

Also, Florida roads have almost no potholes due to the fact that potholes are created by freezing/warming cycles in the weather.

Hurricanes. name one hurricane that hit Florida, and Florida didn't get Federal assistance(money).

Well I'll tell you what happened in Ma,

The government waged a huge fear campaign on TV about how devastating it would be if the people didn't pay income taxes, and the sheeple believed it.

But guess what, the sheeple knew something. If the income tax was abolished, the state government would not have been cut as mandated by the people.

Instead, the bloated state government would have remained largely intact, and "aid to cities and towns" would have been cut instead.

So, in effect, the state would have refused to give us back our own money, while maintaining the cronyism in the state.

The further removed the government from the people, the less tax that they should be able to collect.

Local government should get the most tax, state next, and federal the least.

I pushed for Question 1 YES.. heres what was told

I don't want a cut in services. I care about social services.
or
I don't want my property taxes to rise.

People are afraid of what government will due if we cut them off from our income.

One, they feel they will cut spending in forms of social programs

Two, they are afraid the state will cut funding of their communities and their property taxes will rise.

Everyone I talked to said they were going to vote NO. If you ask me, they are insane. Why on earth would you vote to PAY TAXES?

However, I could not effectively counter their arguments.

People don't realize how

People don't realize how much wasteful spending the government does.If they did they wouldn't fall for there scare tactics.
The government is the cause of the problems.People don't realize the cause, but just wants government to fix it.

Nor could I. I was

Nor could I. I was misinformed and like the rest of the masses. I to beleived that that voting NO couldn't hurt. This morning I dug a little deeper only to realize I had made a mistake. I'm still new to all of this but I'll be damned if I don't try and learn from the mistakes I've made.

Its fear of change

I was totally shocked that #1 did not pass to end the tax. Massachusetts is truly a welfare state. The reason it didn't pass is because too many are benefiting from the programs one way or the other. They just don't understand that to kill the beast you have to cut off its head. This Revolution has a long way to go!

Dreadful Place ..

I live here and have never been able to explain it. Bigger fences make better neighbors.

they used fear

to sell it. My mom voted for it due to fear.

I'm still waking up, still

I'm still waking up, still learning and still reading and made the mistake of voting to keep income taxes thinking it couldn't make things any worse. I need some lamen terms on some of these laws and what they are really about so I can debate with the people who think like the rest of the masses. Like I once did. What is prop 2.5? could someone point me in the right direction?

Sorry, Aphrodite

Your parents are dopes. Are they so ill-informed that they don't know that in order for their property taxes to go up, there would need to be an override of Prop 2.5? That the ads put up by the opposition to ending the income tax lied right to our faces about that? Where are people storing their heads these days when they're not using them?

Don't answer that. That's more a rhetorical question. :)

And oh, Aphrodite, if you're taking my comment personally, please know that I told my husband that when this country completely tanks and the communist members of his family who voted for Obama need help, he should know up front they won't get it--not from me, anyway.

Nien ...

You must have missed the punchline. There have been 4000 overrides that people voted on already and its about to get a whole lot worse.
Governor Patrick is proposing a new law which will offer an exemption to senior citizens from property tax increases.
Now this sounds all fine and nice until you consider the motive for Patricks sudden concern for the plight of his elders.
It seems that seniors are a pesky voting block that can be counted on to stay in touch with local issues and not only know when the special elections are being held but also to show up and vote the 2.5 overrides down.
Once exempted seniors will no longer care about property tax increases and when they stop voting against them you can count on a whole lot of new school construction and the like paid for by ..... you and I.
Enjoy ...

They get around prop 2.5 by

They get around prop 2.5 by increasing the assessment more than the allowed increase in income tax.

It's how we are all conditioned to think ........

Remember when Ron Paul first said that if we pared back the budget to just what it was 10 years ago ... we all could stop paying income tax. Everybody gasped, sure he was wrong. But he wasn't. I think that's how most people think ... they think society would fall apart if we didn't pay income tax.

Welfare States they rely on

Welfare States they rely on these Democrats to make decisions for them.

North Dakota

The issue in ND is that property tax burdens are so heavy. Income taxes are already pretty low. This was not the measure we needed.

Property Taxes

The reason property taxes are high in any county is because of LOCAL Government. Local county commissioners pass budgets at the county level. Cut local spending and property taxes go down. Government run schools are funded by a portion of property taxes - if people opt out of the government run schools, school taxes have to go down because it is based on the number of students.

You didn't need a 50% income tax reduction?

I find that impossible to believe, especially considering the low median income up there.

Sorry to say it's in the numbers

My parents live in MA, I talked to them about the income tax vote and they were on the fence. They insisted that their property taxes would go up, which in MA is ridiculous to start with. They voted lesser of two evils (in their mind) to keep the income tax. In their bracket, retirees, house paid off, lots of vintage cars, it made sense. Low income, but own a lot of pricey stuff.

BTW,

Does this mean I can start growing weed in my parents' Massachusetts yard?

Colchester, New London County, Connecticut

Sure

So long as it's 0.99 ounces at a time. LOL

North Dakota too? What is going on here?

The state government must have put a lot of FUD (fear uncertainty doubt) out there for the sheep to second guess themselves. Either way it is a shame

After all it is the home

of Teddy ( Big Taxer & Spender ) Kennedy.

Massachusetts changed to Taxachusetts !

Wake-up people it is YOUR money !!!!

I am from Mass.,

The government ran a huge advertising blitz promising gloom and doom if the state tax was abolished, and the sheep listened.

Please do not say bad things about my state, because the sheep live everywhere in this country.

But one good thing on the social freedom front, is that marijuana is now decriminalized, and not many states can say that.

You know, they did that in CO in 1992...

...when TABOR passed. They were wrong. Yesterday they tried to kill TABOR again. It failed.

I was walking up to vote

and I saw a man holding a Tierney, rep. dist 6 MA, sign (a true traitor, voted against the bailout, then flipped his vote) and I was about to yell traitor at him, until I realized he was a former colleague of mine, who I respected in the past. I decided to engage him. I asked him why Tierney voted against the bailout, then changed his vote. He blathered about this and that, I politely told him that I would be voting against his choice and wished him good luck....

Looks like he is going to win, bastard.

One positive is that it looks like question #2 is going to pass.

This election, I'll take ANY victory.
