The reason Obama is called "black" and not "multiracial" by the corporate media is rooted in centuries of bigotry, unfortunately. It used to be that the children of any black and white couple were considered black--the saying was that "one drop" of black blood made you black. When white slavemasters impregnated their black slaves, the resulting children were black and therefore property. The whole thing is kind of disgusting, actually. The fact that many people, white and black, still think this way...I guess it makes you wonder how far we've really come.

The thing to remember, I guess, is that most "black" people in America are "actually" multiracial if you go up the family tree enough, so Obama really isn't that unusual in that respect. Obama would have been subject to Jim Crow Laws, and other forms of racial discrimination, and it is in that sense that his election as a black man has meaning. Even if he isn't biologically "black," he's black in the sense that a lot of racial distinctions are socially constructed.

Just remember that at the end of the day, people are people and are not defined by the various identity groups society tells them they belong in. Know people as individuals. For some people, race will be an important part of their self-made identity. For others, it won't.

why do you refer to him as "our" president elect? He could be white, black, green or blue I still think he is an imposter and he sure isn't my elect. He is playing the card he is told to play to win the game.

Have you noticed since this morning the amount of coverage and the repetition of the phrases "War on Terror" and "Terrorist" has increased in a profound way. Looks the Pentagon is spending more of our money to get the sheeple ready for the NEW GUY to pursue their objectives.

I don't think they mention his middle name even once.

It's funny. I have white friends that are more black than Barack "the middle name of who we shall not mention, ever" Obama..........We live in a strange world indeed.

Did you know the indigenous "Native American" languages did not have words for "he" and "she"? It is because they did not refer to people based on gender. This is a similar case. The English language splits people up and uses language to make reference based on physical characteristics. It is a downfall of the English language....

...that's what American means or a Brit or an African. A hyphenated American would also appropriately reflect nationality -- specifically, American. There are white people who are born in Africa who have migrated to America. If they wish, they could call themselves African-American.

Black, white, brown, tan, these are shades of color. If you want to describe someones color, these would be appropriate to use.

Personally, I'm not a hyphenated American. That is, not Irish-American, Scottish American, etc. I'm an American.I do not assume anyone else is a hyphenated American. Hyphenation only serves to divide us -- and to keep those who embrace hyphenation divided.

It's long past time for some in America to grow up on this childish issue of color.

Obama considers himself an African American. So be it. I can live with that if he identifies himself in that way. It must be noted that no longer do people of color (any ethnic sector) have any excuses that "whitey" keeps them down. A man of color has aspired to the highest office in the land.

I was thinking about the same issue though. I was wondering why he wasn't termed the first "ethnic" President. He's half white. I have as much claim to him as the black community does.

In the end, it doesn't matter a fiddle. I'll accept him regardless of all that because race simply doesn't matter. I'll truly only be concerned about how he governs.

Why even go mucking about in the race swamp? Race is an ill-defined concept and is irrelevant to anything in life that matters anyway.
