How would Paul supporters vote on Prop 8?
Submitted by zrih1 on Thu, 11/06/2008 - 23:37
What do Paul supporters think about the ban on gay marriage (prop 8) that was passed in CA two days ago? 52 percent of voters cast their ballot to define marriage as a heterosexual union. Are you happy or displeased with the outcome? What do you think of people in support of prop 8 being labeled as bigoted and "racist"? What do you think of Mormons donating over $20 million in support of the proposition?
»

Easy question.
The Federal Government has no authority to regulate marriage of any kind. It is a religious ceremony.
I can't speak to the legality of this at the state level, I'm not familiar with Californian law.
However, speaking to the morality of this at any level of government, all I can say is...get the government out of the churches. A church should be able to marry two people--or refuse to do so--at its discretion.
Speaking as a someone who believes that true religious liberty means that no one sect should be able to force its positions on other sects through the government...I say get the churches out of government. Two people who want to get married should have no obstacle other than finding a church willing to preform the ceremony.
If you want to create a parallel civil institution to marriage, fine. But you can't call it marriage, because marriage is a religious ceremony. Period.
As for the Mormons spending $20 million on this...apparently wallowing in their collective homophobia is more important than, say, helping hurricane victims. Or starving children.
It is this issue more than any other except the War on Terror that makes it hard to stomach the "Republican" label on my voter registration card. If we want to turn the party around, we need to supplant the (disgustingly statist) theocrats.
Have you ever asked yourself
Why has this never happened before in America? Why does this continue to be banned?
Does morality even enter into your vocabulary? Your disbelief in God will never make him go away.
"There can be only one permanent revolution - a moral one: The regeneration of the inner man."
—Tolstoy
"The body is but a vessel for the soul,
A puppet which bends to the soul's tyranny.
And lo, the body is not eternal,
For it must feed on the flesh of others,
Lest it return to the dust whence it came.
Therefore the soul deceives and despises."
Proposition 8
I don't live in CA, but I would have voted YES on Proposition 8. This issue isn't about equality, it is about preferential treatment for gays and lesbians. These people want nothing more than to FORCE all Americans to accept their lifestyle as normal when it is the farthest thing from it. For one thing, the conduct of homosexuals and transsexuals is an abomination to the Lord as it is stated in several Bible passages. Secondly, Ron Paul himself has stated that this issue should be left to the states and that he has no problem at all with states that want to define marriage as between one man and one woman. He has also stated that no state should be forced to accept another state's gay marriage. I agree with these statements and also can accept a Constitutional Amendment defining marriage in the above mentioned traditional normal sense, even though Ron Paul doesn't agree with that. A reason that I think that gays want preferential treatment is because I see what is happening where I live. Here in Montgomery County, MD, where the entire County Council is controlled by liberal democrats, a gay or lesbian who works the county can have the county pay for their live in same sex partner's health insurance. A heterosexual in the same situation who is cohabitating with an unwed significant other doesn't have the same privilege. Why is this? The rationale for the libs is that the heterosexuals can get married, while the homosexuals cannot. If this isn't preferential treatment, then I don't know what is. I would think that it would be fair if only married couples were allowed to get health care this way. It would save the residents money in taxes. Other problems here include sex education at the county middle and high schools that includes teaching that homosexuality is an acceptable normal lifestyle. Parents can opt to keep their kids out of these classes, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this material shouldn't be taught in county public schools to begin with. Still another problem here is the fact that transsexuals can use the bathroom of their choice throughout the county and can sue you if you choose not to hire them for a job if it can be proven that you rejected them for being transsexual. Churches and other religious institutions are not exempt from this. We actually had enough signatures to repeal this law and put the measure on the ballot for referendum, but the gay rights lobby hired lawyers, sued, and managed to keep the referendum off of the ballot. Alot of people weren't happy with this, alot of them democrats, believe it or not.
Prop 8
To have basic human rights on a voting ballot is ridiculous...
To allow the government power to regulate who you can and can't marry is also ridiculous.
To allow a tax exempt organization like The LDS or any other church or synagogue to donate money for a political cause...ridiculous.
These churches have the right to believe and even say whatever they want about whomever they want...but we all know money sways people...and an organization as large and as wealthy as LDS could find much better causes to donate to that would have nothing to do with politics.
As a Libertarian-Leaning Constitutional Patriot...I'd have to say, if Gay people want to get married...okay! ITS NONE OF MY BUSINESS...Its not the governments business and its not the business of the rest of the skeemers who voted yes on 8 either...We are in America so that we can have freedom. Yet American's want to deny this right to some people because they love the same sex....Really? Just think about all that this country has stood for....and in the 21st Century we are still fighting about something as petty as allowing people to marry other people?
You like to say "its just not normal!"....but what is normal?
This issue is VERY emotionally charged. For one to say that Gay people getting married is against what God wants is not only ridiculous, its blasphemy. Any true Christian would welcome Gays into their church with open arms...knowing that Christ himself doesn't mention Homosexuality AT ALL in the Bible. Then of course we have those Christians who love to quote "Leviticus"....when it comes to Gays...but those who quote it might just want to read all the so-called laws that they aren't holding to as well.
Christ did say though that we should Love One Another...
The vast majority of No on Prop 8 supporters...I would bet a nickel that they voted for Obama...Funny...that means a Democrat in office and more government to have power over your personal life....

Mordred you're an
Mordred you're an idiot....it's because of people like you not being able to seperate your religion from the rigths of others that are destroying the country..you're not part of the solution but a part of the problem...
WHY DO PEOPLE THINK THAT IT'S GOING TO GO AWAY IF YOU SIMPLY SAY IT'S WRONG OR DENY THEM THEIR RIGHTS TO BE TOGETHER?
Man I can't stand people like this...
I saw a t-shirt that couldn't have said it any better...
STOP THE HATE, SEPERATE CHURCH AND STATE!!
You say it's wrong cus the bible said so..but didn't your little book also say to love thy neighbor..and do to others as you would want done unto you?..So I'm guessing you want to be judged and treated as a second class human being and be dinied your HUMAN right to love another person...
Religious people are the most judgemental people on the planet...thou shalt not judge my ass!!!

Of course it isn't going to go away....
I never said that it was. People are going to do whatever they want in their bedrooms regardless of what people think about it. Gays and lesbians are going to be together no matter what happens. However, I simply don't believe that any state should sanction their unions. I also believe, and nobody in this thread has really stated this, that the gay rights movement is funded and supported by the establishment. There is reason to believe that part of the New World Order agenda is to force all Americans to accept alternate lifestyles as normal. Just look at the "mainstream" press; most liberal newspapers editorialize in favor of expanded gay and lesbian rights. The same can be said about the tv news media. It is well known who controls these outlets, with their directors being members of the CFR, Trilateral Commission, and Bildebergers. It wouldn't surprise me at all to find that George Soros has supplied money either directly or indirectly to the gay rights movement. Texe Marrs has written a book called "Circle of Intrigue" that talks about the global Illuminati conspiracy, among other works, which talk about who is behind what is happening to America and the world in general. He points out that the gay rights agenda is part of the illuminists plans. His website is http://www.texemarrs.com if you want more information on him. He is a Baptist minister. And no, he is not at all linked to Fred Phelps of the Woodsboro Baptist Church in Kansas who likes to proclaim that "God Hates Fags". I don't think that Phelps' assertion is true because I believe that God loves the sinner but hates the sin. Also, people who are gay can be saved and renounce homosexuality, as some of them have. Many Christian churches DO take homosexuals in with open arms, but also tell them that their lifestyle is sinful and that God doesn't approve of it.Those who don't want to change their lifestyles simply don't go back to that church, as is their right to do so if they choose. As far as who I voted for is concerned, that is Chuck Baldwin, (Constitution Party), who was endorsed by Ron Paul. I believe that Baldwin's views are similar to mine in this respect.
And by the way Mordred...the
And by the way Mordred...the bible also says it's ok to sell your daughter as a slave for whatever purpose the buyer chooses..and can be returned if found not suitable...is that okay too?..does the good book have that right?

What mordred wrote appears in no way to be related to your comments, you may have it confused with something else, read it again, don't skim it, read it. Appears that y'all are on the same side of the arguement.
Thank you Dr. Paul for making me act on what I already knew was right.

I vote no government in any
I vote no government in any marriage. I also dont belive in changing definitions to accomadate your life. Its biblical that god gave marriage to people and Homosexuals are an abomination to god. Why dont they just live together, they own thier body and can do as they like, if its consentual. They cant change a definition that had biblical meaning to accomadate a sinful life. It makes no sence, the real issue is they want same sex marriage to be moral. It violates natural law.
No government in any marriage.
I voted no.

earlier O'reilly was on somewhere and they talked about this issue as an example of the radical left trying to force their will on the majority.
Apparently this thing has lead to some heated controversy and anger, and I can understand why.
Proposition 8 was worded very poorly. I think its opponents actually screwed themselves on this one, because they made the language unnecesarily harsh, thinking it would help the bill be defeated (they were actually challenged on this by it supporters), but the bill passed anyway.
The intention of the amendment was to counteract recent california decisions to honor gay marriage the same way they honor heterosexual marriage AS A STATE DEFINITION with attached legalities and benefits.
Personally, I think marriage should be completely separated from government, and this is one of those situations where trying to incorporate something that is partially religous and cultural into a function of the state breeds animosity and division.
After all,if the government is going to be handing out benefits to certain people based on them performing in a religous ceremony, it does seem to be a violation of church and state.
On the other hand, by expanding these benefits to other definitions, those same religous people feel their sacrament is being redefined by the government.
The big issue with Prop 8 was that while it was intended to undo the legal recognition by California, part of the text reads "Eliminates Rights of Same-Sex Couples to Marry. Initiative Constitutional Amendment", and "Changes the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California"
By this language, the amendment could be seen as California reserving the right to ban any contractual agreements by gay couples or religous ceremonies that involve gay couples, even independent of the question as to whethere those marriages would carry legal weight in the sense of state benefits. It was this aspect that so inflamed the "ultra-left."
As far as what Ron Paul would do, it seems clear to me that as a Christian, he is oppossed to gay marriage, as a libertarian and hypothetical California voter, he would be oppossed to the use of government to legislate morality, and as a constitutionalist and congressman, he would say that it is not an issue for the Federal government.

One Louv. ;-)..
In the Catholic Church, marriage is one of 7 holy sacraments.
And yet, the government feels that they have the authority to give out marriage licenses and offer special benefits to married couples, and even define marriage.
This is not separation of church and state. This is like the government giving you a tax credit because you were baptized! It's ridiculous.
The Federal and State governments should get out of the marriage business, and instead license civil unions to both heterosexual and homosexual couples.
As a proponent of civil rights (and a gay man), I would've voted 'no' to Prop 8.
Well as far as I am
Well as far as I am concerned two gay dudes can pack their crap all they want but when they try to teach my kids their disgusting preference thats a different story. The gays want marriage but the church doesn't want it which is understandable to say the least. The first thing that will happen when gays get married they will then target the church and pay them back for all the persecution they have supposedly suffered. They will goto a church and demand to get married and when the preacher refuses they will take them to court and the state will take away their tax status. This has already happened and will continue to happen so look at things both ways. When You give certain people rights you take away rights because thats how the system is made. No person in this country should have more rights than other people. The only solution is to get the state out of the marriage business and to allow social unions. What is the difference between a social union and a marriage Nothing ... So until its rewarded we will continue to have these problems.
is this the huckabee forum?
if someone is gay and wants to marry how is it the concern of anyone but those two people? whether you agree with gay marriage or not, what happened to living your life as you see fit? i would also accept your church choosing not to perform such marriages. aren't we here for individual liberty?

Rocketman -- Ron Paul will say it's a State Issue!
It's not casual -- They are forcing us as educators to exclude all religious history and study (which is the causitive reason for half the worlds wars, nevertheless we can't talk about it) yet they are telling us it's okay to re-work the definition of marriage; in fact they are not telling us it's okay they are forcing us to do it.
Now how do you tell 12 years olds, when they ask AND their older classmates tell them (if we don't); "how do gay men create babies - what do they do sexually?" Forget about the never ending derisive laughter that comes when you tell them two grown men kiss each other like Mommy and Daddy and "it's okay."
You would have to see our "sensitivity" training in dealing with this to understand that this is not a "oh let them do what they want" -- We are conditioning the childs mind to think in the opposite direction from his/her first reaction.
I dare you to walk up to a group of 12 yeard old boys or 11 years old as that's when sex-ed begins in some schools and tell them it's okay for two men to have anal sex; they'll think you are a freak. The language we have to use is so psychological its indoctrination period. Also, we are supposed to start them when they are young - you know the "My two Dad's" series. Which is fine, because everyone in those books are Ken Dolls -- but no amount of prep will help the teacher on her first day of sex-ed and she has to say anal sex is okay and perfectly normal.
Especially the older kids you have to answer in detail because they are of sexual age and we have to answer heterosexual questions -- words like "penetration, climax, orgasm, sperm, ovum, penis, clitoris, and vagina" are all ready difficult subjects.
We do not teach kids (AS OF NOW) that having hetero-sexual anal-sex is healthy or okay. For the most part they never bring this up -- they have to get the idea from a friend or brother who gets it off the internet; because it's not natural - it is learned (I'm referring to heterosexual education).
Now when it comes to gays and those same probing questions come up how are we supposed to answer that? You should hear what they want us to say? Because we can't tell them to ask their parents -- parental right over sex education has been removed.
If Prop 8 would have passed there would have been a dynamic increase in private and homeschooling kids -- especially if they win at the national level.
I will vote for civil unions, legal contracts, inheritance, pensions and retirement -- but do not enter the schools otherwise parents will revolt and pull their kids.

Which is why government control of eduaction is a terrible idea.
I was going to share some criticisms I had with your point of view on this, but then I realized that the whole debate is irrelevant. If we got the government out of the classroom, it would be a non-issue.

Paul Yes on 8 as Christian - Let States Decide Constitutionally
As a Christian I would be willing to bet he would have voted Yes on 8.
However, as a politician he is very clear on this!
He has said it is a State Issue -- It is not a Federal Constitutional Issue, nor should the Federal Gov't get involved.
The State decided and now the Gays can "rethink" the "reasons" against Gay Marriage have been given.
One of the main reasons I'm against the current "tour de force" of gay marriage is that we as educators are being forced to take sensistivity training and gay marriage "re-education."
Gays have worked very hard to get religion out of School and they have. Now they want to lobby to get their position into the schools and that is not "fair." I agree keep Church out of School, I agree heterosexuals should not have advantages over single people, I agree gays and lesbians should be able to create any contract or make any claim on inheritance or retirement they chose, and lastly I would counter argue if they get church out they must get gays-out of the school system.
Most of the people I've talked to voted "Yes on Prop 8" because of the education ploy.
Now if you are Gay or infavor of Gay Issues go back and rearticulate your argument. Focus on Contract Law, Inheritance, Insurance, Un-Fair Hetero Married Tax Advantages - etc etc etc.
So - Ron Paul is "YES ON 8" as a Christian and "YES - Give it to the States Civil Matters are for the States."
That is Paul's position and don't fake the funk :)

out of schools????
Ummmm....what about the atheists...satanists......home schoolers????
Thats one of the dumbest things I've heard anyone say!
Kurtisohio -- Come on now -- You've heard dumber
My argument is the Minarchist / Ron Paul small gov't argument -- let the states decide.
If you want it to be "national" then you are for "Constitutional" interpretive plurality -- "whatever goes."
To force a change at the national level is a "groupist" approach and not a libertarian or minarchist approach -- this is "DailyPaul" - as in Ron Paul, right -- "Rugged Individualism"
Look -- I've said it before I'd support different language and if Gays did not push for their agenda in school or when they show up in S.F Catholic Churces dressed in drag (not the sweet modest kind either) to make politcal statements then they have to play by the same rules. No religion in school no gay-indoctrination in school.
Kurtisohio -- It's the Pink Mafia who are ruining it for "regular" gay folk, period -- you need to check the national agenda of the gay movement which is different then just a simple "marriage issue."
See, the State (especially the Fed) has no business in a civil matter.
My opinion is if a particular church wants to marry gay people and if those people enter into a civil union contract -- LET THEM DO IT.
But as an educator we are being put through sensitivity training - the books have been printed and in some schools same-sex-education is already being taught.
Let me tell you first hand -- the kids want to know how it works and once they hear it there is no controlling their mocking-jeering tones except by force and threats of punishment.
AND YES I'VE HAD GAY "PARENTS" TELL ME NOT TO DISCUSS "RELIGION" IN THEIR CHILDS CLASS - I wasn't either they issued the threat at the beginning of the semester. They even had a private meeting with the Dean.
My personal philsophy is teach the 3 R's and you can't go wrong, hahahaha.

There is only one answer , NO.
This is yet again another way of the nanny state regulating the American people. Therefore being a follower and defender of liberty one cannot vote to suppress more liberty. Ron Paul has mentioned many times that these matters shouldnt even be a government issue for it is a religious matter and again regulating and telling a person what they can and cant do is tyranny.
If anything it should be a state's issue and if they decide for or against then we the people have the freedom to leave to greener pastures. In my opinion.
It's just a ride....
I voted NO.

Yes on Hate
I would vote yes on Hate, because I am just so hateful. Picketing peaceful churches calling it an unconstitutional violation of church and state? Since when is a church not allowed to council it's congregation about all things?
Sort of like this pastor: I guess he violated church and state because he is trying to warn his congregation about the evils of the Federal Reserve. And actually educating them on the history they never heard in Public Schools.

I would vote yes to ban gay marriage until the licensing
is taken away from the government. Government shouldnt grant marriage licenses. Religious practice belongs in the hands of religious people, and to allow gays to push gay as normal ,then shove it into the public school books as normal would be ridiculous.I pay taxes unfortunately which fund the socialistic public school, and I personally would not care to fund a school that suddenly pushes gay ideas as "normal" just because the government has permitted gay marriage as "normal" under a "marriage" license . So until the government is taken out of granting licenses,i will never permit gay marriage to be defined as normal under the government.

And you come to
this all knowing conclusion how? I happen to have 2 family members that are gay. My brother and my nephew. Trust me they were born that way. They are even both red haired and look like clones. Knowing gay people and talking with them many you will find will ask you. Why the hell would anyone choose to be gay? Choose to be judged and treated like a freak or live a lie. There may be some mentally disturbed people out there that choose to act out by choosing a gay "lifestyle" But being truly gay is not a choice. That's like saying I choose to be born with a defect where everyone will persecute me. You people piss me off. You act like people decide to be gay just to be a problem to you. Wake up call.. You are the ones with the problem. God made gays for a reason and he probably doesn't appreciate you condemming one of his creations.
Don't throw bible quotes at me either. man who lieth with man "as" he lieth with woman, it is surely an abomination.
