What did Election Day teach us?

What did Election Day teach us? Assume all the votes were 100% real.

1. Even with a perfect candidate who brings people together, we can't win the GOP presidential nomination. Ron Paul was the perfect GOP candidate at a time when the party needed him. He lost, not because he did anything wrong, but because the GOP base is stubbornly out of touch with the rest of society. That's why they picked McCain, and that's why McCain lost. The party base is pro-state and anti-Liberty.

2. We are a minority. We need to stop this fantasy about "taking over" this or that. You can't take over in a nation of 340 million people with a soft group of five to ten million people--only 100,000 of which are willing to be activists.

3. The Libertarian Party is in steep decline. The party has split up over Bob Barr's misbegotten candidacy, and is going to shrink in size in the future. Soon it will be virtually defunct, like the Reform Party and 132 other third parties.

4. The Constitution Party platform scares people off. I hate saying this--I voted for Baldwin and I admire Howard Phillips. But it's the simple truth.

Brush aside conspiracy talk and discussion of 'the elites'. The news media is predominantly made up of people who are cosmopolitan, liberal, and politically correct. They aren't going to embrace the Religious Right. Hence no mainstream media coverage. No mainstream coverage = An ineffectual political party lost in the woods.

5. Ralph Nader is in decline, and unlikely to make much more of a mark. He's eminently likeable. He's tough. He's principled. The problem is, he's too far Left to be palatable to small "L" libertarians. And doctrinaire liberals will vote Green or Democrat instead.

6. The Green Party doesn't even belong on our radar screens for reasons that aren't even necessary to cite.

Where does that leave us? What are our lessons...conclusions? Discuss.

successful movements

Maybe we should do some research on other movements, what made them successful or what made them fail, common features in successful movements, etc. I found some interesting things with this google search: "how successful movements work" Changing/refining the search terms may yield better results.

This may be the way to go.

This may be the way to go. As Kevin pointed out, Ron Paul was a perfect candidate for the GOP. We all know why. But mistakes were made and with politics as they are, we need to do some research. Perhaps consult an expert on political strategy.

Many of us are relatively new to politics. We were not prepared for the sleazier side of campaigning. But we have learned a lot these past two years. We will be more prepared in 2012. Those who will stick it out with the GOP deserve our thanks.

In many ways our movement excelled. Many have noticed and have tried to take from us. Now we need to learn from their strategies. One thing I do know is that freedom is popular.

Heavily influencing the

Heavily influencing the Republican party is the way to go. We can make many inroads into the party and we are presently doing this in Minnesota. We need to first work hard at our local level BPOU's. There are many people in Minnesota working hard and in 2 years you will definitely hear from us.

Also, Ron Paul is now a regular guest on many business cable shows. They don't say anything bad about him anymore. Cavuto actually learned enough from Ron to make pretty amazingly accurate statements before asking Ron some questions. Defiinite progress.

We need to teach as many people as possible how our country was really designed to work.

There are many ideas I

There are many ideas I favor. First, require only paper ballots. Second, reform ballot access. Third, we need to unite resources, votes and members as a whole and also on a party by party basis.

Media plus Money equals president

Thats what I learned.

Reinforces

Reinforces that we are in very very very sad shape indeed! Seriously!

Anyone who is considered to be a messiah is big big trouble!

Well, for me......

Closing your eyes and using your finger to hit any spot is as valid a way to vote as any.

Did I win something?

well, "us" is not of one mind

If you are dismissing the Green Party out of hand, you are missing the point. We need to find what is AWAKE in others and nurture that. NOT focus on our differences and start eliminating people from those worthy of speaking to.

Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.

I'm not saying they are

I'm not saying they are unworthy--I'm comparing their ideas to the general belief systems of libertarians. They don't fit.
