Obama wants "mandatory community service?" Hello! Isn't that slavery

Isn't that where you are forced to work for free? Have I oversimplified this? Lots of sites are talking about the "mandatory community service" story. I'm speechless. I wonder if it was widely talked about by the MSM if he still would have had the support he needed to win last week. » |

Obama’s vision of the American dream, however, will not consist of Americans freely choosing to volunteer to work in their communities and neighborhoods. It will be a requirement. “Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year.” (Emphasis added.)

Associate editor, Terrence Watson, posted a satirical letter from the Western Standard to American youth who could expect to be required to serve 50 to 100 hours per year in "volunteer" activities. That was the obvious implication of the statements found on Obama’s website, Change.gov.
As news of the community service army draft trickled out, Obama webmasters began to scrub references to "mandatory" and "require." Take a look at these before-and-after quotes taken from the America Serves portion of the website:

In all fairness, we can’t really call Obama’s proposed national service plan a new draft. First, he’s not talking about requiring young people to do military service. Second, we are getting decidedly mixed signals as to whether the service will be compulsory. At first, the word "required" was used freely; now we see much talk of tax credits, less talk of requirement.
Nevertheless, this new program certainly feels like the next step toward a new draft. Just as Ike’s planners made sure that the national highway system could see usage as a military transport system, Obama’s civilian service corps could make mustering a draft army much, much easier.
After all, this is the guy who said (vis-a-vis the establishment of ROTC programs on all college campuses):
I think it’s important for the president to say, this is an important obligation. If we are going into war, then all of us go, not just some.

If all he wants is 100 hours thiers nothing for us to worry about because we've already done our time by working for free 6 months out of the year to pay taxes including the volutary income tax.

Two obnoxious quotes from the decision
the 13th Amendment declares that neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall exist. This Amendment was adopted with reference to conditions existing since the foundation of our government, and the term 'involuntary servitude' was intended to cover those forms of compulsory labor akin to African slavery which, in practical operation, would tend to produce like undesirable results. [240 U.S. 328, 333] It introduced no novel doctrine with respect of services always treated as exceptional, and certainly was not intended to interdict enforcement of those duties which individuals owe to the state, such as services in the army, militia, on the jury, etc. The great purpose in view was liberty under the protection of effective government, not the destruction of the latter by depriving it of essential powers.
There is no merit in the claim that a man's labor is property, the taking of which without compensation by the state for building and maintenance of public roads violates the due process clause of the 14th Amendment. That Amendment was intended to preserve and protect fundamental rights long recognized under the commonlaw law system.

i posed this the other day as a myspace bulletin. i've had at least two Obama supporters repost my bulletin. they are now asking me questions as to what the hell is going on.

Clarification...
The elite want mandatory service... Obama is merely their puppet and rubber stamp. A corporate PR campaign was started over two years ago.

That's the great thing about America. We are a "free" country and people really do want to remain free. That's why people are raving over this topic all around the Internet. Required / mandatory (or whatever you want to call it) service is not a quality of a "free" nation.
If I am ever told by my government that I must work for free, regardless of how well intentioned the free work is - I intend to remind them of the 13th Amendment and refuse to comply with any and all such mandatory service.

How is this different from community service requirements
to graduate high school. I remember testifying against that law oh 12 years ago.
