Putting Together "Liberty Class" Please help with rough course outline

I'm thinking:
American Revolution
Republic Form of Government
Constitution
Federal Reserve
Executive Powers
Globalization/NWO
Solutions

Help me if you can. I don't want to scare people away, but I want them to leave a two-hour class feeling very awakened.

Two descriptions to describe a pure democracy are:

1.The class takes a vote to see if they will shave your head. You vote "No" the rest of the class votes "Yes". Pure democracy, your head gets shaved over your objections. Republic-Rule by Law-Bill of Rights. You vote "No" and insist you have an individual right, you keep your hair.

2. Gang rape--only one person objects----( this one wouldn't be a good description for children)

I would go to the C4L site.... "Education" section

They have lists of books, audios, video's etc divided into categories. I think you could really put something together with these resources.

You've forgotten

the free market. Start with Hazlitt for simple source material.

Also, don't neglect the broken window fallacy. It's powerful.

Make sure to include these...

The Ron Paul FREEDOM PRINCIPLES

-Rights belong to individuals, not groups.

-Property should be owned by people, not government.

-All voluntary associations should be permissible -- economic and social.

-The government's monetary role is to maintain the integrity of the monetary unit, not participate in fraud.

-Government exists to protect liberty, not to redistribute wealth or to grant special privileges.

-The lives and actions of people are their own responsibility, not the government's.

Don't know how this would fit but....

I wrote this the other day for another post and it might serve as a good introduction. I believe that most people don't understand that there is NO American Culture other than the philosophy of freedom..... Have at it.

"If you have ever lived in a foreign country you begin to understand the word "Culture". Almost all of the other countries of the world are held together by thousands of years of a CULTURE. It is not something you learn it is part of your core, and it makes up a large part of how one understands the world. It is the "glue" that holds a people together. A culture includes not simply the music, dress, customs, foods, religion and ethnicity of an area. It defines the way the people see themselves and their place in the universe. It develops over centuries and is part of the CORE of the people who live in that country. As an "outsider" you can live in a country for decades, and learn their ways and respect their traditions, but you can NEVER BE who they are (Japanese, Chinese, Mexican) because you are not from their Culture, and you THINK and see the world differently. The "glue" that holds their souls together does not stick to you.

This issue of "Culture" is something that most Americans do not understand, and thus, you have US Presidents who think that they can impose "democracy" on other countries, with no understanding of the people they are dealing with.

"America" was a country that was a huge experiment. It was NOT based on a thousand year Culture. It combined people of hundreds of different Cultures onto a single continent. And the "glue" that bound these peoples together was a PHILOSOPHY. They had no common music, dress, dances, foods, religions, but rather hundreds of different backgrounds from hundreds of different Cultures. But the GLUE - the cohesiveness that made this "America" was a common belief in the PHILOSOPHY of FREEDOM that had never been tried in the history of mankind.

The PHILOSOPHY of "America" was the ONLY "Culture" that bound the people together. They could overlook their differences in tradition, as long as they all clung to this philosophy as the cohesive force.

What has gone wrong in "America" is that slowly but surely the philosophy has disappeared. Therefore, what we are left with is simply a large LAND MASS, filled with people with various and different ideas, with NOTHING HOLDING THEM TOGETHER. This is why things have gone downhill. And THIS is why restoring the message of freedom is so important. WITHOUT THIS PHILOSOPHY HOLDING THE PEOPLE TOGETHER THERE IS NO GLUE.... THERE IS NO "AMERICAN CULTURE" ....THERE IS NO COHESION. The message of freedom is the ONLY thing that will make this land mass AMERICA again. - by definition.

The "bad guys" knew this. They have done their best to destroy the PHILOSOPHY of freedom, and thus, have aggressively enhanced our DIFFERENCES so that we are constantly seeing each other in groups of "friend or foe". They have divided us so easily because without the philosophy of freedom we never DID have anything in common.

When people say "God Bless America" it is the Philosophy that America followed that they are referring to. But when the Philosophy disappears the phrase loses all meaning. It MUST start to mean more than a land mass again. That is what we are fighting to restore. We are the ONLY HOPE that there will BE an "America" again. We are the ones who must restore the "American Culture" with the philosophy of Freedom... the ONLY common ground the people of America ever had. Without it we are only a geographic location full of lost people who, having no culture of their own any more, randomly divide into groups and try to gain an identity that is not their CORE.

What a great lead-in to the diversity section in class 2

Many Americans have come to believe "culture" is that which foreigners have that I can eat, dance to, or hang in my bedroom. Detoqueville described a rich American culture of civic engagement and ahderance to invidual liberties. It was there. It's still here.

Ultimate Liberty — Anarchy

Ultimate Liberty — Anarchy

Anarchists favor voluntary self-organization. Anarchists do not oppose
all rules and laws; anarchists only oppose rules and laws imposed involuntarily by illegitimate authorities such as the state, and favor voluntarily-agreed upon rules and laws. The current National Debt clearly demonstrates that politicians do not act in our best interest.

The most virtuous transactions among people arise from voluntary interactions. (Which is how society functions most of the time anyway.)

Fantastic collection of articles on Voluntaryist philosophy can be found in the book:
'I Must Speak Out' edited by Carl Watner

Good website for free books and videos of anarchist philosophy in action.
http://www.freedomainradio.com/

'Evil means' never achieve 'good ends'. Voluntaryists reject electoral politics as well as revolutionary violence. Politicians, through force, may kill or incarcerate any number of liberty loving individuals, but they can never compel us to do anything against our will. True freedom is a state of mind, a knowledge that our inner spirits are ever free. True reforms must begin within ourselves.

The Corrupt Fear Us.
The Honest Support Us.
The Courageous Join Us.

Anarchy

Is simply the shifting of power (decision making) from center to edge. It is *not* the elimination of order/law. The current international community is currently an anarchy as there is no world government which currently supersedes national sovereignty. Yet, there is still international law and treaties because the parties (nations) voluntarily agree to it.

The structure of the internet is also a form of anarchy. Austrian economists call this "sponteneous order" - it is not a lack of planning, but shifting the planning to it's least divisible unit, the individual.

The free market facilitates anarchy; distributed, decentralized, planning and decision making.

Anarchy is a transitional form...like a vacuum

which an oligarchy usually fills. Without law, there can be no freedom.

True

the flat out anarchist may have a good theory, but in practice all it leads to is more suppression. The ones that hate every cop irregardless of what they do is a good example. Yes, they overstep their bounds far to often, but a blind hatred and disrespect for them serves no purpose, but to increase the abuses. There are a couple of cops that come in the store regularly and they have some pretty messed up views of right and wrong, however those views tend to be more the product of dealing with thugs day in and day out rather than an ingrown need to be an ass. Again in theory anarchy kicks butt, but in practice it just opens us up to tyranny.

By the way has anything else come of your sign hanging/pepsi in the cooler thing. I want to thank you again for holding your ground on that.

Thank you Dr. Paul for making me act on what I already knew was right.

The Market for Liberty

A great book written in the 70s about why governments and their monopoly on force are not needed in our lives.

it's at book.freekeene.com as an audio book, not sure about print version.

Also, 'What Has Government Done to Our Money?' by Murray Rothbard, available at Mises.org.

Begging hands and bleeding hearts
Will only cry out for more...'
