Just as good as buying a teddy bear
If people started posting how they were buying teddy bears to hug because it made them feel better and gave them piece of mind, I would be embarrassed because it's happening on a site with Ron Paul's name.
This strange CB radio spree does no one any practical good because there is no realistic scenario where they would be needed. It certainly doesn't do this movement any good. If you like CB radios, go find a CB radio forum. If you are a survivalist, there are probably plenty of forums for that too.
I don't see how any of this has anything to do with Ron Paul. All I can see is that it could hurt our credibility and make our movement look nuts. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the people posting crazy stuff are actually our opponents who are trying to snuff out this movement by discrediting us.

Hmm, that's strange. I'm definitely not pissed. I don't think there is anything in my comments that seems pissed. I notice a few people sound pissed in their replies, but it sure isn't coming from me. I thought I've been rather coolly detached and rational.

We have always had CB's
I'm sitting in my husband's Ham Shack right now. When we moved to our farm in the country 4 yrs. ago, my hubby a radio freak, met many others in our neck of the woods on the CB. Most if not all put Ron Paul signs in their yards and voted for him. These are really great people we have met and they too are preparing for rough times ahead. Yeah. Having a CB is a smart idea!
My dad had one but he just listened, unless we were on trips.
It's cool really, no cost but the radio no damn licenses. I guess the gov. thinks that spectrum is almost impossible to regulate.

What is the scenario?
No one has answered this yet: what is the scenario where the Internet, cellular towers, land lines, not to mention satellite all stop working?
Someone said the power would go out for a week, but that didn't even happen in the worst socialist countries. This is the USA people.

My worst case scenario is a full blown Zombie Apocalypse
All of my contingency planning, food stores, weapons caches and communications plans need to be ready to support the above mentioned scenario (the undead walking the earth in search of food).
If your baseline of preparedness is total chaos amidst shambling hordes of Flesh Eating Zombies I think you are really ready for any disaster that may come up.
When that day comes I think a pre-arranged radio communication plan would be a really good idea.

I lived through that blackout in Manhatten
I'm in IT in the finacial services sector. POTS lines were not affected. Although individual extennsions would not work after the PBX lost battery power. Everyone was very polite and cooperative to one another. People even worked together spontaneously to direct traffic. Blackberries worked PIN to PIN. I actually kind of remember it fondly. Drinking warm beers at Murphy's (52nd and 2nd) tavern under candlelight at 2 in the morning. I cabbed it home to Hoboken where my power had already been restored.
If that's supposed to scare me, I'm not impressed. CB's can be fun. There's nothing wrong with a CB. However it's obvious that's not what this thread is all about. It's about Armogedden non-sense.

Why the hostility?
We are currently going through some serious financial hard times and there is nothing anti Ron Paul about sharing ideas. I think that the CB idea is great and I wish that I had thought of it instead of getting stuck with my 2 yr cell phone commitment. There is no monthly bill or penalty if cancelled.

I've been in communities
where the entire village relies on marine VHF radios to communicate. No telephones. Just good old fashioned radios.
If you need to get someone on the phone in a distant location, there are ways of relaying telephone calls via radio.

Quite the opposite. The people pushing Armageddon here are pushing fear on others. We're just saying please look at this rationally. There is no credible scenario where suddenly the Internet, cell phone towers and land lines suddenly stop functioning. And if they do, THEN would be the time to get a CB radio if you so desire. We're asking people here to think more clearly about the issues, and most of all, don't spray your crazy-sauce all over Ron Paul. He really doesn't need that kind of baggage.

And don't keep a flashlight or battery operated radio or candles handy in case the power goes out, either. Just go to the store and buy them when you need them! Oh wait. The cash registers won't work without power? What? Oh never mind.
And don't carry jumper cables in your car either. If you stall and are stuck on the side of the road, just wait for someone else to come along who has them!
And whatever you do, don't store any emergency food. It's not like you might lose your job someday and it would be good to have some reserves on hand for that time. All of our jobs are 100% secure for eternity.
Heck, don't even save any money for retirement or for a rainy day.
