Stevens trailing in Alaska Senate Race by 3 VOTES!

Republican Sen. Ted Stevens, a titan of Alaska politics convicted of felony charges last month, fell behind by three votes Wednesday as the count resumed in his re-election bid.

Democrat Mark Begich, the two-term mayor of Anchorage, began Wednesday down more than 3,200 votes but closed the gap as officials resumed counting early and absentee ballots. The tally was 125,019 to 125,016.

Neither side expected to be able to claim victory Wednesday. By late afternoon, officials had counted more than 44,000 of the roughly 90,000 outstanding ballots.

"Right now we're cautiously optimistic," said Bethany Lesser, spokeswoman for the state Democratic Party. "There's obviously more votes to come in, but it goes to show how hard we worked to get the vote out early and how important that was."

The reason people are voting for Stevens is because if he is

convicted (after appeal) they will have to have another emergency election and they can field someone in his place.

It was too late to remove him from the ballot and field a substitution so in a way the best thing to do is vote for Stevens because it's not fair to just give up a seat to someone and they don't even have any competition.

Right. And Begich is a complete loser

he is just as corrupt as Ted, and in fact, is in bed with the same developers and companies that Ted is entangled with.

Begich is a crook and a liar and he should not be allowed to just waltz into a new gig in D.C.

Nope, paper ballots filled in with a pencil, and run through an optical counting machine.

How come they did'nt just bag his dumbass ...

... and throw him in jail? After all, he's a convicted felon. Something is totally wrong with this picture. I have heard and read about Stevens and wondered why he's even allowed to walk.

Felony huh?

What can you expect from one of those Alaskans. I'm a transplanted Californian. We were the West Coast's normal people (but that was a long time ago; a lot has changed).

I hear Washington people are pretty cool.

How is it that a person convicted of a felony can'tvote, but ...

can hold a public office?? Is it me, or is this "bass acwards"??

The legal system does not consider him a felon until he is

sentenced, which will be in February.

If he is sentenced, he will then not be allowed to vote, but yes, he could hold office. Wild.

Mark Begich, his democratic challenger, is no better. He just hasn't been caught or indicted yet. The Begich scandal sheet is at least as impressive as Stevens'.
