THE PARTY’S OVER, By Patrick J. Buchanan

The Crash of 2008, which is now wiping out trillions of dollars of our people’s wealth, is, like the Crash of 1929, likely to mark the end of one era and the onset of another.

The new era will see a more sober and much diminished America. The ‘Omnipower’ and ‘Indispensable Nation’ we heard about in all the hubris and braggadocio following our Cold War victory is history.

Seizing on the crisis, the left says we are witnessing the failure of market economics, a failure of conservatism.

This is nonsense.

What we are witnessing is the collapse of Gordon Gecko (’Greed Is Good!’) capitalism.

What we are witnessing is what happens to a prodigal nation that ignores history, and forgets and abandons the philosophy and p rinciples that made it great.

A true conservative (Rep or Dem) cherishes prudence and believes in fiscal responsibility, balanced budgets and a self-reliant republic.

He believes in saving for retirement and a rainy day, in deferred gratification, in not buying on credit what you cannot afford, in living within your means.

Is that really what got Wall Street and us into this mess — that we followed too religiously the gospel of Robert Taft and Russell Kirk?

‘Government must save us!’ cries the left, as ever.

Yet, who got us into this mess if not the government — the Fed with its easy money, Bush with his profligate spending, and Congress and the SEC by liberating Wall Street and failing to step in and stop the drunken orgy?

For years, we Americans have spent more than we earned.

We save nothing.

Credit card debt, consumer debt, auto debt, mortgage debt, corporate debt — all are at record levels.

And with pensions and savings being wiped out, much of that debt will never be repaid.

Our standard of living is inevitably going to fall.

For foreigners will not forever buy our bonds or lend us more money if they rightly fear that they will be paid back, if at all, in cheaper dollars.

We are going to have to learn to live again within our means.

THE PARTY’S OVER!

Up through World War II, we followed the Hamiltonian idea that America must remain economically independent of the world in order to remain politically independent.

But this generation decided that was yesterday’s bromide and we must march bravely forward into a Global Economy, where we all depend on one another.

American companies morphed into ‘Global Companies’ and moved plants and factories to Mexico , Asia, China , and India , and we began buying more cheaply from abroad what we used to make at home: shoes, clothes, bikes, cars, radios, TVs, planes, computers.

As the trade deficits began inexorably to rise to 6 percent of GDP, we began vast borrowing from abroad to continue buying from abroad.

At home, propelled by tax cuts, war in Iraq and an explosion in social spending, surpluses vanished and deficits reappeared and began to rise.

The dollar began to sink, and gold began to soar.

Yet, still, the promises of the politicians come.

Barack Obama will give us national health insurance and tax cuts for all but that 2 percent of the nation that already carries 50 percent of the federal income tax load.

John McCain is going to cut taxes, expand the military, move NATO into Georgia and Ukraine, confront Russia and force Iran to stop enriching uranium or ‘bomb, bomb, bomb,’ with Joe Lieberman as wartime consigliore.

Who are we kidding?

What we are witnessing today is how empires end.

The Last Superpower is unable to defend its borders, protect its currency, win its wars, or balance its budget.

Medicare and Social Security are headed for the cliff with unfunded liabilities in the tens of trillions of dollars.

What we are witnessing today is nothing less than a Katrina-like failure of government, of our political class, and of democracy itself, casting a cloud over the viability and longevity of the system.

Notice who is managing the crisis.

Not our elected leaders.

Nancy Pelosi says she had nothing to do with it.

Congress is paralyzed and heading home.

President Bush is nowhere to be seen.

Hank Paulson of Goldman Sachs and Ben Bernanke of the Fed chose to bail out Bear Sterns but let Lehman go under.

They decided to nationalize Fannie and Freddie at a cost to taxpayers of hundreds of billions, putting the U. S. government behind $5 trillion in mortgages.

They decided to buy AIG with $85 billion rather than see the insurance giant sink beneath the waves.

Unelected financial elite is now entrusted with the assignment of getting us out of a disaster into which an unelected financial elite plunged the nation.

We are just spectators.

What the Greatest Generation handed down to us — the richest, most powerful, most self-sufficient republic in history, with the highest standard of living any nation had ever achieved — the baby boomers, oblivious and self-indulgent to the end, have frittered away.

"The Last Superpower is unable to defend its borders, protect its currency, win its wars, or balance its budget". That pretty much sums it up.

I'd say that instead of

I'd say that instead of unable for some of those things, he should have said unwilling. For instance, the U.S. could control its borders if it wanted to, instead it chooses to do a poor job of it.

Go Buchanan

"Unelected financial elite is now entrusted with the assignment of getting us out of a disaster [read: NWO] into which an unelected financial elite plunged the nation.

We are just spectators."

Absolute truth. All we do is watch and whine. We deserve everything we get, and will ever get.

"There can be only one permanent revolution - a moral one: The regeneration of the inner man."
—Tolstoy

"The body is but a vessel for the soul,
A puppet which bends to the soul's tyranny.
And lo, the body is not eternal,
For it must feed on the flesh of others,
Lest it return to the dust whence it came.
Therefore the soul deceives and despises."

This mess

Started way before the babyboomers. By thier time Americans were already in a financial situation set up to make it close to Impossible to own a home ,buy a car,or anything without using credit. We we conditioned to be debtors. Who can afford to buy a dependable car by the time they need one for thier first job? The first thing neccessary to start out in life is good credit to even move out of your parents house. Parents can't afford to help thier kids get started anymore. The cost of rent has been so high for so long you can't move out and make a car payment or afford a used car and the repairs it may need. It may be possible to stay out of debt but it takes a really good paying job and alot of luck. My son moved out over a year ago had a nice used car he paid for in full and was doing fine and starting to save. Then wham someone rear ended him and he had to get a dependable car. His job involves alot of driving. He had to do it quickly. The other guys insurance would not pay enough so he had to end up spending a bit more for the next used car and make payments. What are you going to do? We went round and round with the insurance company, Maybe could have gotten more for his old car if we went to court. But you know who would get that money.

Small potatoes I know

but that's how it starts.

The biggest

hindrance to trying to restructure a new economy after this one crashes will be the liberals.
They are convinced that capitalism is to blame for the crash.

10 planks

The 10 PLANKS stated in the Communist Manifesto and some of their American counterparts are...

1. Abolition of private property and the application of all rents of land to public purposes.
Americans do these with actions such as the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution (1868), and various zoning, school & property taxes. Also the Bureau of Land Management (Zoning laws are the first step to government property ownership)

2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
Americans know this as misapplication of the 16th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, 1913, The Social Security Act of 1936.; Joint House Resolution 192 of 1933; and various State "income" taxes. We call it "paying your fair share".

3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance.
Americans call it Federal & State estate Tax (1916); or reformed Probate Laws, and limited inheritance via arbitrary inheritance tax statutes.

"It is the responsibility of the patriot to protect his country from its government."

— Thomas Paine

"Endless money forms the sinews of war." - Cicero, www.freedomshift.blogspot.com

Perhaps we might also add, as robpatozz has in a past

thread, Marx's view of the use of public education in his 10th plank, saying:

10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children's factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production

Come to think of it, aren't we also living through a close approximation of #5 as well?

5. Centralization of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.

If you add "Rockefeller" and "Bush"

I'm with you.

If you just confiscated the Rockefeller - Rothschild wealth, you could solve the world's financial problems.

Thanks for the update.

As a "Baby Boomer," I resent this....

The "Depression Babies" have run this country and run it into the ground since the 1950s. The "Greatest Generation" (or, their parents, at least) gave us Wilson, the Fed, the income tax, the Great Depression and FDR-fascism. The "Boomers" are just coming on line for their fair share of the wealth they created, only to find their parents, brothers and sisters stole it from them.

Like Marx and Buchanan, this writer has succinctly identified the problem, but neither the culprits behind it or the solution. The solution is to take back what has been stolen from us and to hold the thieves accountable.

We need

to start unseating judges, starting with the one who said Phil Berg does not have standing.

unseating judges ?

Just how does one go about unseating a lifetime appointed Federal judge ?

Agreed. Any citizen of the

Agreed. Any citizen of the United States should have standing in that court case, imo.

Presumably, since PJB was born in 1938, I gather that he

exempts himself, and selected others of his generation (possibly Alan Greenspan who is 12 yrs older), from any blame for participation (or non-resistance) in the events upon which he has chosen to focus. Absent from his "story" are references to the enabling legislation of earlier generations, his own included, that established the structural framework by which the woes he laments have been brought to bear upon all of us. Should the boomers be blamed for this as well? Shame on the boomers for not being born into the world, complete with a worldly knowledge of politics, economics, the sciences and whatever else they should have known. Who taught the boomers? Perhaps we should simply decline to engage that part of history. After all, it serves no purpose in supporting his final conclusion.

any blame on the victims is absurd - blame ROTHSCHILDS

We have been pawns in their game for centuries. They need rounded up and their genetics eliminated from humanity. If they can produce generation after generation of a creature that has no remorse in hoarding wealth while waging war to deliberately kill other people and increase their wealth, there is nothing redeemable in these people. Not one of them ever broke ranks to help stop the slaughter or the enslavement of the masses. They must be stopped. We must stop beating around the bush (or the Clinton or Obama or even the Paul) and face the REAL enemy. Rockefellers are no better, but the Baron Rothschild has confessed to the plan of global financial enslavement. He needs arrested, and instead they are taking my taxes and sending it to him?
ARREST EVERYONE NAMED "ROTHSCHILD" and any known blood relatives. If it was good enough for the people still in Guantanimo, it is good enough for them.

Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.

well said.

"they can produce generation after generation of a creature that has no remorse in hoarding wealth while waging war to deliberately kill other people and increase their wealth..."

amazingly mind boggling isn't is?

exactly

I second and third that motion.

EXACTLY!! Burn them at the stake - and sell tickets =)

A "WTF" moment.

One does wonder what the Baby Boomers did to create the crisis. Rail against the powers that be, shaking one's fist, correctly state "we are just spectators"...and then lay the blame at the feet of the Baby Boomers?

Are we sure Generation X didn't mastermind it instead? One too many Keanu Reeves movies warped their brains or something?
