If we were nuked.

This is the standard survivalist thought process--I have my doubts, although I think after nuclear war, bands of starving thieves would be more likely to converge on the countryside than in many other scenarios, because bands of such looters could pop up in either the country or the city. And police and military protection would probably be thinner than in any normal breakdown.

People would be crazier...cops much more likely to stop being cops and stay home. Soldiers much more likely to be assigned to non-security tasks that keep their hands full, or redeployed. As for Blackwater mercs and "private security"--people would not allow them to do anything in the aftermath of an event that extreme. Most of them wouldn't last very long before being strung up.

On the other hand, the sick and dying aren't going to loot people, and starving refugees will have a hard time navigating blocked highways to converge on the countryside. The absence of anything marginally resembling a logical civil defense would ensure that roads out of a nuked urban area would be choked with cars and impassable. Some highways would be filled with corpses and stalled cars.

And of course, vigilante committees--impromptu militias--would pop up in rural areas very quickly.

If contemplating nuclear war, I'd worry a lot less about guns and ammo, and a lot more about shelter, potable water and food.

I've seen other blast maps that show the megaton radius patterns.. but I can't seem to find it. You can increase the one on the map to about 500kt. I also beleive there are warheads inside of warheads so the radius may even be bigger, I will see what I can find.
