What bank do you use and why?

I wish I could just get paid directly without using a bank at all, but unfortunately it's just not the way it is these days. I'm still going to take my money out and hold it in my own safe place, but a bank is necessary for getting paid and making certain transactions.

I'm considering moving my 'money' to another bank. A small local bank is what I have in mind. But when choosing a bank, what would you want to know? What 'features' make a bank more secure or desirable than others?

Credit Unions

k2kampmom They are member owned. I have not used a bank in over 30 + years. My checking is through my credit union. If I keep my balance at a certain level, I earn interest on my balance. My paycheck is directly deposited into my account. I am with a fairly large credit union with over 53,000 members. As far as I know, they offer pretty much all the services that any of the local banks in my town offer.

A small local bank because they still keep things personal. They actually call you if there is a problem before they stick it to you. There Heads are local and accountable.

we use

a small local credit union. We have a CC through there at8% and even though I've been late a hundred times we get no fees or rate increases. Signature loans up to one months gross income, and they are smart with the investments..got bad credit?..go elsewhere.

Look into it. They basically had to take the TARP money. Read their statement of values, look into the CEO. He's probably one of us. And they probably have a lot of "us" working for them.

Great small town bank.

Local Credit Union

Definitely seek out a good local credit union, better service and they are supposed to operate as a not-for-profit institution so they have the best interests of the depositor in mind. The board of directors is also made up of depositors so they are run by the people who use their services.

To find a good local credit union go to maps.google.com and click on "get directions". Type in your address in the field for point "A" and just type in the term credit union for point "B". This will give you a list of the closest credit unions to your home for easiest access. Next do some research on each of their websites, get familiar with them to see which you like best. Check interest rates on savings accounts, checking accounts, etc. and just check out their policies and products in general. This is how I killed the banks.
