Scene from "The Matrix" they never showed

First of all, if you have not seen "The Matrix" or "V for Vendetta" I recommend them both, and I hate movies.

The crew is looking for Neo, his "real" person. Neo finds himself being overcome by a strange sensation, as though he were becoming metallic, he feels like he is suffocating, then suddenly he is gagging, choking, he pulls at something in his throat...
Neo sits up, gasping for air. He finds himself in a pod full of nutrient goo, still hooked to lifelines which he begins to disconnect. He looks around, and sees he is in a massive warehouse, filled with pods of people hooked up in the same manner he had been a moment before...

Neo notes that there are people like him, sitting up and pulling out the tubes, gasping and choking for air as they sit up and look around. About one in ten, he estimates. There are no real conversation, everyone who wakes up is so stunned by their surroundings that they cannot find words. They look at each other, but seem to know there are no answers to be gotten from asking each other anything.
Before anyone has time to articulate an intelligent question, the maintenance units come through and begin plucking the faulty units from their pods. They are tossed into the rubbish shoot, their pods are emptied of the nutrient goo, disinfected and a new embryo is implanted. Even as they watch their pod-mates being dispatched, the shocked silence persists. The unit reaches Neo, and he finds himself falling down the garbage shoot.
There is a splash, and suddenly Neo finds himself bobbing about, like a cork on the ocean. There are people everywhere. At last they have found their voices, and they scream in fear. They do not know where they are, they do not know what is going on, they cannot understand how they were sitting at home drinking coffee, watching the news one minute, and lost at sea the next. They will die before they compare experiences and realize they all had the same thought just before they sat up in that pod... they were reading or listening to the News, when something did not add up, and they thought "That can't be right..."
One moment they questioned the reality of their existence, and in that instant that reality was shattered... the next thing to be shattered is their existence.
A different fate awaits Neo; he will not drown here with nothing but questions in his mind. His world never made sense to him, he had never been content to take whatever the news said as truth. Perhaps it was that skepticism that made him different, perhaps it was just random luck, but Neo had a lifeline before him. LIterally. A hovercraft dropped a litter to him, he climbed on with only a bit of apprehension. While he did not know what fate may await him on the hovercraft, the fate of those who were not offered this option was obvious. Among the surprised, frightened faces were the faces of the millions of people who had gone before them, in varying stages of bloat and decay.
Once at the door of the craft, Neo sees his rescuers: Four other humans are there. These people are not hooked to nutrient tubes, they do not have Newsunits feeding them information. They have learned to question everything, they have no sentimentality attached to the notion of "faith." This tiny handful of humans are the only ones who loved truth so much that they never accepted anything without questions.

So, maybe you get my point, maybe not. I have made a life-long habit of NOT trashing people's crutches, of leaving folks room to use whatever tools they find are helpful in life. But there are so many of you who think you are "awake" and you are still lost at sea. "Truth" hovers above you with a real lifeline, every moment of every day. You must take off your blinders to find it, though. Your crutch does not make you stronger any more, it is holding you back.
