US officials flunk test of Amerian history, economics, civics
US elected officials scored abysmally on a test measuring their civic knowledge, with an average grade of just 44 percent, the group that organized the exam said Thursday.
Ordinary citizens did not fare much better, scoring just 49 percent correct on the 33 exam questions compiled by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI).
"It is disturbing enough that the general public failed ISI's civic literacy test, but when you consider the even more dismal scores of elected officials, you have to be concerned," said Josiah Bunting, chairman of the National Civic Literacy Board at ISI.
"How can political leaders make informed decisions if they don't understand the American experience?" he added.
The exam questions covered American history, the workings of the US government and economics.

With all the party and media babble about who is better equipped to take over the Republican party in the wake of the bloodbath of the '08 election, it's impressive how deeply the pundits have been able to repress the memory of the Ron Paul campaign.

End The Fed Rally 11-22-2008 - This Saturday!

Go look at the summary
Good golly, have you read the summary?? This is where the researchers list their findings based upon the responses to the questions.
Excerpts:
Hm; combination of engaging in frequent conversations about public affairs, reading about current events and history, and participating in more involved civic activities...sounds a lot like us DPers, doesn't it?

I thought that I did pretty well. The questions were pretty easy. I have to give credit to my high school U.S. History teacher for teaching me the TRUTH about our history.
You answered 30 out of 33 correctly — 90.91 %
.....My first thought was that I was happy to have a result that was WAY better than the politicians......but then I realized that bar was set kinda low to start with.
Guess I need to do a little more reading.

Welcome aboard. The Costitution is being forgotten and not taught in our schools, we need to start Constitution classes in our own areas to educate the general population and our elected official who can't break 50% on this quiz and proffesors around 57%.

I thought it was a difficult test. Learned quite a bit after taking it and then researching/studying the correct answers. I'll chalk it up to learning something new every day.
The "test makers" are wrong about #30.

A couple I should definitely have known, the others were more intuitive. What is what actually should happen, or what actually happens? That's the question. I didn't feel too bad about it since I have not taken a U.S. History course since I was in my early 20s and I am 52.

I also disagree with some of the "correct" answers like #30
The right answer is the problem we are fighting against.
How would that ever lead to a balanced budget and not allow the inflation tactics they are currently using?
I guess I should have answered how the government does act not how it should act.
#30 is Correct
The question is:
Which of the following fiscal policy combinations would a government most likely follow to stimulate economic activity when the economy is in a severe recession?
not:
Which of the following fiscal policy combinations would be most likely to stimulate economic activity when the economy is in a severe recession?
Given the way the question was phrased, C is the right answer.
And I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but my significant other, fanofwalt, said I should post that I got 100%.
No cable or broadcast in the house, went to, but did not graduate college, and when in college, I studied the sciences and mathematics, not history or political philosophy. What I've learned has been in the last 10 years from self-reading inspired by Ron Paul and others in the liberty movement, in an attempt to give myself (and thereby my children) a classical education.
Yep
I agree..

Frankly, a LOT of the questions were no-brainers. No wonder our country is in such a big mess, both with the elected officials and voters.
I shouldn't be surprised. It seemed I was the only one in my economics class who knew who the president was when the New Deal was instituted. Also, what the New Deal was about. Sigh... (yes, it's a Keynesian course - I've ordered books to correct my thinking over Christmas break.)

Do not read this if you have not taken the test!
SPOILER!!!
29) A flood-control levee (or National Defense) is considered a public good because:
A. citizens value it as much as bread and medicine
B. a resident can benefit from it without directly paying for it
C. government construction contracts increase employment
D. insurance companies cannot afford to replace all houses after a flood
E. government pays for its construction, not citizens
I selected A because I think B is a fallacy. The money used to do these projects does come from residents. They look at taxes collected to decide what to spend. If revenues are down, so are projects. In my mind residents do directly pay for it. Almost all government spending is directly paid for by residents.
I guess since they do not get a bill that says levee on it its not considered directly paying.
where's the quiz?
I would like to see how the DP'ers score on it..

I took the quiz and scored
I took the quiz and scored almost 88%. My sister who doesn't follow politics much nor have the same grasp of economics scored over 75%. Many of the elected representatives who took this quiz scored 44% while the average American scored 49%. No wonder we have these people elected year in and year out with such a lack of understanding of the issues and then people want change and elect the same nonsense. There was another quiz that asked voters about Obama and McCain and the majority of Obama supporters scored under 50% on this quiz as it tested their knowledge of the candidates. McCain supporters scored over 75%.
I have to thank each and every person who froze in the northern states to protest the Federal Reserve and it appears that we must continue to fight this battle as it's going to take a long time to teach America the problems we face...but then again, I fear that the end of the USA is near and that the next step we have is to get ready for the real battle to defend the very Liberty we all desire. Keep up what you're doing and do not give up on educating others as it's always best to work peacefully to solve these problems rather than having a hot war with countless lives lost.
