Ben Stein's CBS Sunday Morning Commentary + Some Stuff Anonymous Wrote: Should Americans Be Ashamed for Believing in God?
The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.
My confession:
I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees, Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees.
It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.
I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.
Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.
(Update: the source for the remainder of this article is not Ben Stein, I have kept it here because it is still food for thought. There seems to be no such thing as absolute truth as regards news information so take it for what it is, the writings of a fellow human trapped in relative dualistic reality.)
In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.
Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her 'How could God let something like this happen?' (regarding Katrina) Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, 'I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?'
In light of recent events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.
Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'
Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.
Are you laughing yet?
Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.
Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us. Pass it on if you think it has merit. If not then just discard it... no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.
(Draw your own conclusions about the article. I'm not crazy about Billy Graham or "magical thinking" in regards to causal relationships between events. As regards the hurricane, I don't think its sad that people died at all, I think human death is a misnomer. It's natural for people to live and die. There are greater forces at work that trump human plans.
The greater point I take away from this article is that it takes courage these days to tell people that you love them and that you love God. Why should people be so afraid to express themselves in this society? It is unfortunate that we've been given so much potential yet most of us are too afraid to shine in front of others.
I remember once when I felt awkward about telling my mother I loved her and giving her a hug but I did it anyway and I'm sure glad I did. It's so strange how afraid of Love we have become. I'm not entirely sure of why that is. However, I detest this post-9/11 terrorism fear-mongering society that we have come to live in. We can do much better than that. We can create a much better reality than that.)

"The problem with trying to child-proof the world, is that it makes people neglect the far more important task of world-proofing the child." -- Hugh Daniel
I agree with his sentiment somewhat . . .
Now is the time for us all to embrace our own faith to pray and work for peace and freedom for our country. Though we all have different beliefs and paths, we share the common experience of horror at what our country has become. So, for once, I have to agree with Ben Stein. If all of our energy was focused on caring and doing for each other, then talking about God, regardless of his name, would not serve to separate us further.
I do not, however, agree with bringing religion into the school or government. There are other, better, ways to teach our children to love. Our schools and government already have too much to say about our lives without bringing religious arguments into the mix. We all know how a discussion gets when religion and God come into it. Imagine the chaos within government, divided not only by left and right, but now christian, pagan, muslim etc. No, we are already becoming a nanny state. If it continues in this direction, eventually, the only thing left to mandate will be our beliefs.
I believe that government and schools are places of work, not worship or faith. We all carry our faith with us in all that we do, whether we're atheist, pagan, christian etc. Hopefully, we all live our faith as well. So, if you are living it, then it can't be disallowed in school or government. But, when at work there is work to do and we should not be worshipping or discussing our faith at a place of business. Just my opinion.

did not come to starta religion. True religion in God's sight is taking care of widows and orphans in their distress. Also, can you also love your enemies as well without God? Do you really love your neighbor as yourself????
more important....
When I get to face death, which we are all goig to, I want to be sure I am right with God, the creator of Heaven and Earth. That is more important than anything else. There is alot of bravado on here, but picture in your minds eye about being on your death bed for a moment, getting ready to exit this world. Everyone here(in the world) has broken the Ten Commandments. God knows what is in our hearts. The Bible talks about two types of children: 1. The children of God 2. The children of wrath. Those are the only two categories that humans fall in... where are you today? You will die one day...no doubt..... God is going to punish all sin, sin cannot be in the presence of God. But God sent Jesus, who knew no sin, to BECOME sin for us!!! GOd placed our sin on Christ, and God poured out His wrath of sin on Jesus Christ, so we wouldn't have to face the punishment... Now that is something to be Thankful about!!!! It get's better, not only is our sin paid for, but Jesus gives us HIS righteousness!!! He obeyed God fully , and when you believe in Christ that righteousness is given to you as well! Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to ALL who believe.... There is something more important than politics people, and that is your soul. Jesus said " What does it matter if you gain the whole world, but lose your soul???? God loves us, and has given us a chance. You want to know if God is Love? Look at the cross, there is Love.... God Bless Let's be Thankful today!

Ben Stein's fairytails can be traced back in time to the use of magic mushrooms. Just google Moses and mushrooms and take a tour of this great religion based on hallucinations from a spaced out trip. I converted from MANNA FROM HEAVEN to reality.
With out a God I can love, hope and treat my fellow man just the same as any one with a religion. Without this neurotic condition called religion I am able to appreciate each day much more without being under a microscope as well a judgment from the pulpit.
Ben Stein was talking down to Ron Pauls economic adviser Peter Schiff about 2 years ago on some MSM talk show. Ben Stein is nothing more than a talking head for the Neocrats.
The USA is under Judgment, it is mystery Babylon
The USA has kicked GOD out! This nation is losing God's protection. Approximately 50 Million abortions have been performed in this nation. That's child sacrifice. This is from the National Right to Life's own website:

The judgment is set.
We are taught evolution.. They teach us that we came from monkeys and they wonder why people act like monkeys. The truth is that we are created beings and we will be judged for our actions. Ben Stein raises some very good points and his movie Expelled was very good.

I've been reading his articles on yahoo finance and each one tells people to load up on stocks while they're cheap and advocating more bailouts for a long time now. This guy is a fraud and a shill for this Keynesian nightmare. Ben has been wrong over and over so frankly I could give a fly F what he thinks about anything. I agree, usually. There are the throw it in your face types but they are a minute bunch.
“manger scene on display at a key intersection”
As long as it’s on private property, not obstructing the traffic/view. But if you want my tax dollars to pay for it then we have a problem.

They're tired of not getting their way anymore.
“I don't like it (Atheism) being shoved down my throat”
Look on the back of your money. Separation of church and state?
“worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God”
Hhmmm not allowed to worship God, where did you say you lived?
The part with Billy Graham's daughter is just crazy talk and I won’t justify it with a response.
“you better not read the Bible in school”
that is pure bs. You can’t read it out loud and disrupt the math class. But yeah after your done with your math work and the teacher is done talking/teaching then fine read it or hightimes or guns & ammo or whatever you want.
that’s as far as I read.

And There We Have It!!!! LOL
Half of the article wasn't even written by Stein and contains distortions and half-truths.
Perhaps it goes to show how much we draw conclusions about things without even knowing the full story or where it came from. This is our precious reality. This is our situation.
See how incredibly limited we are? Why do we insist on our own viewpoints and opinions so much when we can clearly see that our understanding of what's going on around us grossly limited?
We are at the whim and mercy of a higher power, the breath. Can you intellectually decide when you will stop breathing? Humbling isn't it?
God is breathing for you all the time and you don't even have to make any effort. God is Love, giving all and asking for nothing in return...

I Love It - Yuck
I love how the religious right continues this fallicious propaganda about Holiday tradition. Much less, how the US, the most religious nation on earth minus Turkey, has become an atheist nation. Very funny, indeed.
The fallacy begins when he makes the gigantic leap that Christmas Trees have been made illegal or are the subject of outcries of hate. I have never seen it, heard about it, or even thought that was possible. Yes, there are restrictions in public schools - and rightly so in my opinion. A teacher or administration should not single out their favorite religion. And, municipalities have been restricted from using public funds for religious displays unless they incorporate all religions. I think that is morally justified as well. BUT - to claim that it is pervasive in all of society, public and private, small town or large city is preposterous. My city is full of "Christmas" trees and they are pretty - no one is picketing the business sectors and burning wreaths in effigy that I know of.
Fallacy #2: "I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians" -- YES, every Christian church has apparently been burned to the ground by those violent agnostics! Run for the hills!! In fact, I push every Christian I know into a black van and drive them to hold in a vault in the Rockies. That'll teach them! Please.... And if a Born-Again Right Wing group responsible for maintaining the Neocon power in the government feels like their control is slipping - Boo Hoo. That's not being pushed around - THAT is "reaping what you sow"
Actually, I stand corrected, I forgot - Gay people still exist. I guess if Christians wouldn't be pushed around so much by the idea of Constitutional rights and liberties we could get rid of them the Biblical way. Then, maybe God wouldn't sit back and watch all those people in New Orleans die because he is busy pouting.
The War on Christmas - As real as the War on Poverty

"We are the inheritors of the American Enlightenment, which tells us that Individual Liberty always trumps collectivism in all forms."
What???
You said:
"The War on Christmas - As real as the War on Poverty".
Since this is a Ron Paul site, I will now direct you to his essay entitled "The War on Religion". Ron Paul writes:
"As we celebrate another Yuletide season, it’s hard not to notice that Christmas in America simply doesn’t feel the same anymore. Although an overwhelming majority of Americans celebrate Christmas, and those who don’t celebrate it overwhelmingly accept and respect our nation’s Christmas traditions, a certain shared public sentiment slowly has disappeared. The Christmas spirit, marked by a wonderful feeling of goodwill among men, is in danger of being lost in the ongoing war against religion.
Through perverse court decisions and years of cultural indoctrination, the elitist, secular Left has managed to convince many in our nation that religion must be driven from public view. The justification is always that someone, somewhere, might possibly be offended or feel uncomfortable living in the midst of a largely Christian society, so all must yield to the fragile sensibilities of the few. The ultimate goal of the anti-religious elites is to transform America into a completely secular nation, a nation that is legally and culturally biased against Christianity. "
