90 Percent of U.S. Infant Formula May Be Contaminated with Melamine; FDA Abruptly Declares Chemical Safe for Babies
Up to 90 percent of the infant formula sold in the United States may be contaminated with trace amounts of melamine, the toxic chemical linked to kidney damage, according to recent tests. The FDA’s test results, which the agency hid from the public and only released after the Associated Press filed a Freedom of Information Act request, showed that Nestle, Mead Johnson and Enfamil infant formula products were all contaminated with melamine.
The AP is also reporting that Abbott Laboratories conducted its own in-house tests that detected trace levels of melamine in its formula products. Together, these infant formula manufacturers make about 90 percent of the infant formula sold in the United States.
Prior to these test results being made public, the FDA had published a document on its website that explained there was no safe level of melamine contamination in infant formula. Specifically, the FDA stated, “FDA is currently unable to establish any level of melamine and melamine-related compounds in infant formula that does not raise public health concerns.”
Once tests found melamine in U.S.-made formula products, however, the FDA changed its story. As of today, the FDA has now officially declared melamine to be safe in infant formula as long as the contamination level is less than one part per million (1 ppm).
Astonishingly: The FDA has no new science to justify its abrupt decision declaring melamine to be safe!

Confirmed DIRECTLY from companies: 12/18/08: Mead Johnson Nutritionals and Ross have both confirmed that their products contain "Round-up Ready" soy and corn products and milk from cows injected with growth hormone.
Non breast fed infants are fed 100% soy or cows milk based formulas as their complete food source during the most significant growth months or their lives. The health risks from these products could be severe with known and UNKNOWN hazards to health.
GMO soy, corn, cotton, and canola seeds which have entered our market in the last dozen years, without adequate study or protection of the FDA since they were approved in 1992.
Pressure needs to be applied to industry by not buying their GMO-Round up Ready FORMULAS with soy and corn ingredients. Ask them to stop this practice and return to non-altered seeds and less pesticides and insecticides negatively affecting our baby's nutrition. In turn, the formula companies have to put the same pressure on the farmers and producers so the practice is stopped on our most vulnerable members--our infants.
Consumers need to buy organic and let their legislature, formula companies, pediatricians, everyone to know about this dangerous practice and have it stopped.
We also need to put the word out to others and to our representatives in government that we need an FDA GMO head who protects our health, not the health of Monsanto, the seed and chemical giant.
We know the FDA under Monsanto influenced/periodically employed- Michael Taylor has NOT wanted labelling or study of GMO since 1992. Our babies our guinea pigs--but not ones that are even being studied.
Europe has been GMO years ago and won't buy our GM US corn and soy.
STAY AWAY FROM formulas and all processed foods with GMO or Round up Ready ingredients and Growth HORMONE injected cows. Do not buy Ross or Mead Johnson formulas for your vulnerable infant!

How much of multiple "nearly nothing" poisons should be considered OK? I may be wrong, but each bad thing that enters your system has a chance of causing an even worse symptom/ illness. I appreciate your logic but wonder what the cumulative effect is when multiple poisons enter the body and accumulate?

"Walgreen Co., the largest U.S. drugstore chain, recalled 173 teddy bears with chocolate bars sold in stores since September after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration discovered some samples of the candy were contaminated with melamine."

HONG KONG—China’s Health Ministry says the number of infants sickened by melamine-tainted milk formula produced by the Sanlu Group has reached 294,000, up from the 53,000 previously reported.
It said 51,900 children had been hospitalized since September, with 861 still hospitalized and 154 of those still in serious condition. . . .
Education about the dangers of melamine contamination in China remains lacking, and in many of the country’s rural areas parents are only just learning about the threat facing their children.
Another parent whose child became ill from a melamine-tainted milk product, surnamed Li, said that the army hospital in Lanzhou, capital of the remote northwestern province of Gansu, is still taking in infants diagnosed with kidney stones. .
Reporting was a key issue in the cover-up of kidney problems from formula made by the Sanlu Group, which were traced to the use of the plastic-making compound melamine as a protein substitute. The company first acknowledged the problems in September after receiving complaints as far back as March, according to the Health Ministry. . . .
Melamine-tainted candy has been exported to countries throughout Asia and Europe. Over a dozen countries have banned dairy imports from China, while international food brands have withdrawn products with Chinese ingredients.
Despite a global outcry, melamine problems continue to spread. Last month, eggs sold in Hong Kong and several Chinese cities were found to contain high concentrations of melamine. Agriculture Ministry officials suspect the chemical was added to chicken feed.

Not my daughter
My daughter hasn't touched a sip of man-made formula since the day she was born and is about 3-5 months ahead already verbally and cognitively. At her age, she is only supposed to say about 3 understandable words and says at least 50-100. She is also already starting to figure out where pieces of a puzzle go and can readily identify shapes, colors, and several letters and numbers. I know it sounds like I'm bragging, but I'm a proud father and also very anti-formula. Go breasts!
But...
While I think Melamine in formula is disturbing, your daughter being able to say 50-100 words has nothing to do with formula vs. breast milk. It has everything to do with how you teach your child.
Numerous studies bear out that breastmilk-fed babies
have greater ability to learn and eventually score higher on IQ tests. See studies referenced in a post of mine, below.
