Dallas Morning News: If Only We Had Listened to Ron Paul!!!

Now is the time to JUMP-START the campaigns for 2010 and 2012.
We didn't lose. The ignorant lost. We know what has happened. Personally I think John McCain Has been used as a patsy. To bring about an Obama administration.

Rod Dreher: Ron Paul, if only we listened

I didn't vote for Ron Paul in the Republican primary (I was a Mike Huckabee man), nor did I write him in on Election Day (I penciled in farmer-poet Wendell Berry). But no Texan this year did more good for conservatism and his country than the congressman from the coast.

Lord knows there was no Republican in the 2008 campaign who talked straighter.

Dr. Paul – he's a physician – never had a chance, of course. He is too peculiar in his opinions and doesn't know how to spin like a TV slick. What he had was ideas, integrity and authenticity. On the most critical challenges facing America, Dr. Paul was more right than the well-funded GOP regulars who bigfooted the campaign trail.

His best moment came in a May debate aired on Fox News. Dr. Paul asserted that too much U.S. meddling in the Middle East invites terrorist blowback – a conclusion shared by the 9/11 commission and former CIA bin Laden unit chief Michael Scheuer. Rudy Giuliani pounced, accusing Dr. Paul of trying to blame America for the Sept. 11 attacks.

But Dr. Paul's point – lost on the demagogic New York mayor – was simply that America should rethink its role in Iraq and the region. "We don't understand the irrationality of Middle Eastern politics," he said in the debate.

Who can doubt it today, given an Iraq war debacle conceived and executed by a president and an elite team blinded by ideology? The Iraq war did deep damage to our military, our economy and our prestige – and it has destroyed the Republican Party's credibility on national security issues.

Thanksgiving dinner. Well, I didn't say a thing. Every day I don't say a thing. Last year my brother and I got into a BIG argument about why Ron Paul is the man. My brother, on his nice big fat pension, along with his wife and her nice, big, fat pension couldn't hear me. He was planning on adding onto his house or buying a bigger, fancier one. He couldn't understand why I wouldn't get a mortgage to get a better house. I tried to explain.

Well, this year they are talking a different tune. They can't afford this and they can't afford that. They aren't adding on or buying a fancier house. They see their sons having a tough time and they have to lend them money to pay their rent. They aren't hopeful about the future. BUT, I didn't say anything at Thanksgiving. I just talked about absolutely meaningless stuff. I didn't need to say "I told you so" because I believe they know that. Thanksgiving was less contentious but sad. Talking to all of my friends is less contentious but sad. Everyone is suffering but no one wanted to listen to me.

The Dallas Morning News is having people nominate whom they would like for Texan of the Year and they will make their decision based on feedback from the articles, this being one, for whom people nominate. The Texan of the Year will be written about in the Dec 28th issue. Please, everyone write the author and tell him that you also want to nominate Ron Paul as Texan of the Year and why. I thought the article was actually very positive, and while I don't agree with his characterizations, Ron Paul came out looking strong. The comments below are very good as well. Hopefully people are paying attention. Who knows, they may even come around to seeing the wisdom behind Ron Paul's over-arching philosophy.

That should be "has" not "had".

This guy sounds like he's upset because he wasn't right (in considering who to support). That one word tells me that he still doesn't get it. And yes, he still managed to slip in the usual sprig of sour grapes: never had a chance, peculiar, far from mainstream, and old crank.I'm surprised he didn't slip quixotic in there!

While he does acknowledge that he didn't listen to the message himself, he still seems to be clinging to his own hubris. Were he not, he might have mentioned that Pennsylvania gave us Ron Paul.
