** Who Else Is Feeding Birds This Winter? **

0 votes

In the spirit of the season let's show kindness to birds.
It is a long winter time ahead for them.
Many might not be here with us by spring time.

Today I started a new habit.
Instead of buying beer I decided to buy a 6 pack of muffins (blueberry) and fed about 50 pigeons with them.

You should see how fast a bird can eat and the smiles on peoples faces priceless which lead to conversations that went from hungry Iraqis to Obama being a warmongering traitor and Ron Paul a true American hero.

Quail, tons of them

WE had about 90 in the backyard in Christmas day.
biggest group so far. Fat ones..Right now they are like pets.
I feed them on the ground, love to see them scratching around, like little chickens. Little greedy chickens..

will work for chicken scratch

The local weather apparently does not believe in global warming, and I have been out shoveling snow every few hours for 2 days, trying to keep one tiny swath to the truck in case I need to get out, another to where my husband parks. In the past, I have purchased special bird food, this year they get bread crumbs and occasionally, I toss some of the chicken's scratch along the sidewalk. I do hope the birds enjoy it, but it is partly for traction, too. This evening, I was visited by dozens of Oregon Juncos and California Quail (damn transplants, ruining the state!) There were so many that even their tiny little bird bodies were enough to melt off the last layer that you can't quite scrape and it turns slicker than snot. I had to get the top 5 or 6 inches, but by golly those birds earned their scratch!

Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.

I Feed The Birds And The Deer

I've been doing it for two years now.

And the squirrels.

Quick story.....last winter was real bad here...I fed deer all winter....100 lbs every other day at my house. This summer I planted an awesome garden, (at my house). Not one deer touched my garden until the first week of October when I told them they could go get what's left...and they did......deer love chard. I really believe there is a respect in the animal kingdom.

Did again this AM

It is cold in Montana these days.

Squirrel proof bird feeder

This was recommended by someone on Pasty.com (a web site for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, altho it may sound like something else!) - supposed to be an excellent squirrel proof feeder. And it's Made in America! I ordered one today. http://www.rollerfeeder.com

Why not get them their very own feeder?!!

So they can be distracted from the the birds feeder? I know - they think EVERY feeder was put out for them!

Try as you might, the little comedians will love you for it and it will provide you with hours of entertainment - no charge!

We used to have pet squirrels many years ago...Nip and Tuck were their names....so I have a bit of a soft spot for them. They would bury the carrot pieces in the neck of my father's shirt that he was wearing, climb up his leg INSIDE the pant leg, sleep in my mother's pockets while she was cooking and ride the handlebars of our bicycles with us. They would jump from head to head and one day my mother noticed a good silk scarf missing...months later she saw it lining the nest of one of our squirrels in a tree on a neighbors property!

so cute

What an amazing story.
I am thinking of writing a book for children about this.

I already feed the squirrels -

they get their food from my other "squirrel proof" feeders!

I'm feeding them but...

I'm feeding the birds but I am still buying beer.

Everything is an excuse to drink beer. The economy is a definite excuse to drink beer. So is bird feeding.

LOL same here!

today I bought some German US and beer from Moldovia(never tried it before)
there might not be a tomorrow(nuclear war cancer...run over by a car...)
a lot of times I feel like a bird and I was born in a country that has eagle as national symbol(Poland) and you guys have the same bird...but actually Poland puts its bird on its flag!!!

I cleaned my kitchen.

Had to stop and have a beer.

Watering the lawn?

Have a beer.

I'm a champagne girl but... hanging out in the garage with a flute of bubbly just isn't right.

It's OK

for girls to drink bubbly in the garage. Just like it's OK for girls to vacuum in high heels and pearls.

Fosters I guess

I almost ended up in Perth Australia instead of Canada when at the tender age of 18.

I've never seen an Australian drink Fosters.

They might do it while traveling overseas for nostalgia purposes, but they don't drink it at home.

Perth is a beautiful (but quiet) city. I lived there for two years. It's the most isolated capital city in the world. You don't just decide to jump in the car and go somewhere -- you've got to fly to get anywhere.

Ron Paul "Sign Wave Across the USA" -- November 5th!

I was dreaming of digging for opals

and loved AC/DC.....18 years old.........my parents joined me in Italy and said it would be too hot for them so I switched to Canada.........often wonder what/how it would be if I stayed with my dreams of living in beautiful Australia.

and there was another city I loved Brisbane on the east coast.

Conversations

I'm glad you were able to talk to the birds about Ron Paul but most of them are not registered to vote.

Me, after this post.

Your posts and comments are continually inspiring and intelligent, legalizeliberty. Thanks for posting this. I will be going to the park this week for bird feeding and watching.
p.s. Your screen name makes me want to laugh/cry.

sweet of you

another smile some good soul puts on my face this day.

a lot of us live stressful lives and this activity is not only good for the mind and soul but also for the body we need walking instead of just driving cars btw I never owned a car...
walk in a park feeding/watching animals returns us to our childhood and some may have thoughts of being a two year old trying to catch a bird while walking barefoot on grass.......oh the feeling of freedom....
I drink this beer to you!

Yes,

I enjoy watching them, but I think I need a better feeder. They sling the seed everywhere, wasteful creatures ;p

The DP is proof that the grassroots support for Ron Paul and his peaceful message of individual liberty is large, real, and not going away!

that's the techique they use to help plant trees

I travel all over mountains in western Canada quite often and I am always amazed to see trees taking root in all kinds of unlikely places steep ravines rock formations etc...its the work of those messy birds dropping seeds!

I did this morning.

That felt good to do.
Thanks for the reminder.

good job Steve

you make my day.

I did the same today with the addition of sunflower seeds and big pretzels that I had to grind into tiny pieces...and I fed about 100 birds in three different places.
This is very calming its kind of like meditation/prayer...

Peace.

This is also very calming for me.
I've got a great aquarium, too.
It's great to just watch them swim.
Little things like this are so important for day-to-day living, especially these days.
