We Need More Doctors in the House

Is it just a coincidence that both Ron Paul and B.J. Lawson are physicians?

I have decided that it isn't. Although there is no guarantee that a doctor will be more liberty-minded or wiser than a politician coming from the legal profession, there are philosophical reasons why a GOOD physician would tend to appreciate the advantages of an individualist versus collectivist form of government; a free market versus managed economy; a non-interventionist foreign policy, and so forth.

(First a disclaimer, I am also a doctor. A family physician with NO desire to run for public office. However, I think my professional experience might give me a special perspective into the mind of the physician/politician.)

"Primum non nocere", "First, do no harm," is one of the oldest and best known principles of medicine. It seems a simple concept, but the reasons behind it are very profound.

When dealing with a system as complex and finely tuned as the human body, it is VERY difficult to make things better through intervention.

Even today, after all of the tremendous strides that have been made in the practice of medicine, the option of doing nothing is very often the BEST option.

A good physician knows that what he does is clumsy tinkering compared to what the human body is designed to do AUTOMATICALLY. He knows that he cannot "cure" the patient; at best he can help the patient's body heal or cure itself.

The best physician is humble. He knows that there are natural and normal reasons for pain, fatigue, sleep, and even depression.

He knows that there are risks associated with masking or suppressing some symptoms. A patient with a headache just might have a brain tumor. Giving the wrong patient endless prescriptions for painkillers could be doing him a disservice. A doctor giving a tired patient on the verge of collapse a shot of methamphetamine to ward off sleep is sued for malpractice. A Federal Reserve banker who lowers interest rates to prevent a recession is praised as an economic genius.

What libertarians call "the law of unintended consequences"; physicians call "side effects", and deal with them on a daily basis.

A physician that treats a viral infection with an antibiotic (the medical equivalent of a "preemptive war") knows that he won't cure the illness and runs the risk of breeding a "superbug" or causing an allergic reaction that could end up killing the patient. Does this sound like "blowback"? It does to me.

The medical equivalent of a "managed economy" would be a patient in intensive care receiving parenteral (intravenous) nutrition, dialysis, and on a ventilator. Everything is "controlled". Nothing is left "to chance".

And yet every physician knows that this is a very dangerous and unstable situation. We only do this as a last resort, and for as short a time as possible.

Our goal is to get the patient back to eating when he is hungry, drinking when he is thirsty, and sleeping when he is tired; and the sooner the better.

So does all of this make every physician a good politician, or even a libertarian? Sadly, no. But it should raise the odds, especially if he is worth his salt as a healer.

And all lawyer jokes aside, there is something a little scary about a government composed almost exclusivelyof professionals trained to think of "Truth" as being anything that can be sold to a jury. When a lawyer convinces juries to acquit his guilty clients, he retires a rich man. When a doctor prescribes or operates with the wrong diagnoses, his patients die and he is a failure.

Think about it.

Congressional candidate for 2010

I am a general practice physician who has just submitted FORM 2, statement of candidacy to the Federal Election Commission last week for a United States House seat. Therefore I can now state that I am a candidate for Congress. The 3rd Congressional District in South Carolina is rumored to be an open seat in 2010 so it is possible for someone new to politics to have a reasonable chance of successfully winning this seat.

Congressman Ron Paul has cured my apathy and awakened a strong desire to work to keep our Revolution going. As I write this comment, the John Adams HBO series is playing in the background and provides a fitting commentary to what is going on today in our country. The British soldiers who were tried for shooting the Americans in Boston in the Boston Massacre were just found not guilty of murder. A trial in which they were defended successfully by John Adams. What about the people still imprissoned in Guantanemo?

There were about 1.2 million people who voted for Dr. Paul for President.
If each of those were to contribute just $5 to my campaign, I could run this race without special interest PAC money. Contributions gratefully accepted and if that is not possible, then please send a note of encouragement.

I'm curious

It's comforting to know that some doctors out there hold liberty in high regard. Does anyone know...

What percentage of doctors vs. lawyers voted for Ron Paul in the last election?

Both my parents

are family practice M.D.s and my mom also has a Ph.D. in parasitology. My dad is pretty small-L libertarian and my mom is too, but slightly less so. My dad actually donated in the boston tea party money bomb, and never donated to any other candidate (although he did cave in and vote for McCain).

According to my parents, I have approximately the knowledge of a first-year medical student, seeing as how I have been hearing them talk about cases for 19 years. Although I am not red cross certified, I do know plenty of first-aid information and when the chips are down, diffusion of responsibility will NOT get to me.

Good for you!

Run for office!
You don't have to be a doctor to make a good congressman.

You could even go to law school if your head is already on straight.

The problem is that they take these kids out of college and warp their brains by teaching them how to "think like a lawyer" before they've learned to think like a human being.
(Or worked in a real job. That's one of the many problems with our President-Elect.)

I wrote a similar comment

I wrote a similar comment here several months ago. It was about how my family doctor is so busy, that she would be in and out of the room in a matter of a couple of minutes. Then one day she saw my copy of "The Revolution." After going to this doctor for many years, for the first time ever, she sat down and talked about Ron Paul and how much she admired him.

She told me that the reason he didn't get more votes was because he was too smart for the American people. She said he was the only candidate who had the right ideas on health care. She sat there and talked for at least 10 minutes and promised to buy his book.

great story

I agree.
I think Ron would have a much better chance to win in Germany where his roots are from or in Switzerland....there was a study done and it showed that only 3% of Americans read books on a consistent bases....George Carlin pointed that out.

"How can we justify to the unemployed and underemployed in the United States the incredible cost of maintaining a global empire?" - Dr. Ron Paul

Sounds like a good lady.

Too bad most doctors are too busy just earning a living to run for office.

Sometimes I think that is part of Their plan.

Health Care was certainly the first big industry to be nationalized (it already is about 90% socialized).

Doctors learn problem-solving, attorneys learn problem-making

We'd be better off with more doctors and fewer attorneys in government. Doctors get more training in science, math, & statistics, making them far more rational in their thought processes.

I have studied many philosophers and many cats. The wisdom of cats is infinitely superior.--Hippolyte Taine

The ultimate solution

The ultimate problem is the perception that there is a problem. While this realization is admittedly ahead of its time, it still underlines how approaching any body - political or biological - as having a "problem" generally summons reactions (remedies) which create further "problems". Lawyers, doctors and certainly shadow governments work this system for profit (whether they are conscious of that fact or not).

Medical school does not teach healing. It teaches how to do what doctors do. Some students will take their education and learn how to be healers with and despite their training and professional status. Most will just do what they've been conditioned to do, which is seldom empowering. Others will consciously sell out for money or power or fame, regardless of moral consequence. In the wash I hesitate to put physicians on a pedestal above the general population, many of whose members are gifted healers without a shred of formal training. Of course, it's difficult to recognize that healing happens naturally - all the time - everywhere - when we're busy diagnosing problems.

The generalization of judgment seldom heals...
Then again there's a special place in Hell for lawyers...

I was rushing in here

to make this very point. Fewer attorneys. They learn the art of deception.

Nothing against lawyers, some of my best friends are lawyers ;)

But when it comes to government, less is more.

But notice how the MSM pundits always harp on "experience" like this is a GOOD thing?

Even people on this sight get sucked in to that paradigm (when they're bashing somebody like Sarah Palin).

We don't need or want a politician who is "experienced" at taxing and spending, waging undeclared wars, running bloated bureaucracies, etc.

True

I am perfectly happy with politicians NOT having governmental experience.

On another note, notice how Rick Perry and Mark Sanford are saying no more bailouts for our states, too many already. They are BOTH presidential hopefuls and I think this is their "Look how good I am" flag to be able to point to this when they start running. I don't like either one of them. Perry is deep into the NAU and therefore, deep into NWO. He will never get my vote again here in Texas. Neither will Sanford.

if u can do a coctors degree you are likely smart so

no guarantea but a hint.... :)

Thanks, I think.

The problem is that Washington DC is FILLED with smart people.
But its the wrong kind of "smarts".

Absolutely!

We need an INEXPERIENCED, DO-NOTHING congress filled with people that would not even know HOW to compose a complicated or obscure law.

If it takes a lawyer to interpret a law, ITS A BAD LAW!
