Parking Meter Bill Passes, Bid Adieu to Free Sundays and Holidays

Earlier this week, we discussed the insane new parking meter rates that would go into effect if the City Council passed legislation allowing Mayor Daley to lease the meters to a private company. Well, they passed it by a vote of 40-5. Ald. Toni Preckwinkle (4th) opposed the measure, claiming she didn't have enough time to review it, prompting this amazing (and classic) response from Ald. Richard Mell (33rd):

How many of us read the stuff we do get, OK? I try to. I try to. I try to. But being realistic, being realistic, it's like getting your insurance policy -- it's small print, OK?

Yes, Dick, it's just like an insurance policy. Why would you need to read the entire thing? We will give him this, though: at least he's being honest. The bill also had opposition from Ald. Billy Ocasio (26th) who seems to still have something of a connect with reality, saying, "I'm sorry, but there are too many people in our city living paycheck to paycheck." Another tidbit about the new bill? Free Sundays and holidays are now a thing of the past and some meters will even require 24-hour payment. So explain to us again how the City can afford 2,000 new SUVs?

We in Chicago are at the center of

predatory, big government. Obama is the new messiah in this town, so that should say something. Mayor Daley fancies himself a King instead of a Mayor.

Even with the private meter company, The revenuers (cops) are still going to write parking tickets instead of fighting crime, and we are the murder capital of the world.

Sales tax in the Chicago is 10.25%

We also cannot own handguns in Chicago. (New York City can own them and conceal carry with a permit.)

This is the least free place in the country and we have the highest prices on all consumable goods (milk, gasoline, etc.)

Now with the meter issue and the parking situation going from bad to worse, I urge all to stay away from this place. Were not a friendly town anymore, we've become that which we despise.

Sure is messed up.

Bet they make great souvenirs!

Sounds like Chicago needs a tea party.

either that...

or publically organize and manually drag them out of office.

The rest is up to the people ;-)

Things like this justify the

Things like this justify the LP strategy of trying to win at the local level first. These are races that a few of us could actually win. No one has ever knocked on my door in Minneapolis about city council or mayor, the DFL and the GOP put thier money in to state and federal elections. Just think, if we had a liberty minded mayor or city council in St. Paul a few months back...

good post

that accurately captures one of the bigger problems with this type of representative government

Yeah, the Chicago is known

Yeah, the Chicago is known for it's "Machine" politics.

'Reading Makes a Country Great'

Come on now. Our New World Overlords can't be bothered with reading what they are endorsing. Does anybody even read any more? Geesh.

That's exactly how they

That's exactly how they passed the Patriot Act ... non-reading and threats.

The legislators think they're in control

... but if they don't read what they vote for, they're just tools of those who write the bills.

Power focuses in the hands of a smaller number, some behind the scenes. Voting, even if it is counted properly, becomes far less powerful when it just choses between one rubber stamp and another.
