Think you can hide from them? Think again. If you want to see something scary. Go to Google maps and type in your address, when the map comes up select "street view". Play around with the arrows up in the left hand corner.
This is only the technology they let the public play with, I am sure they have even more sophisticated technology. They days of disappearing into the woods may be over if this is any indication.

Ban 'terror aid' Google Earth, petition says

Petition to Bombay High Court says Google Earth aided terrorists in Mumbai attacks
* Mumbai attackers used GPS systems to navigate
* Petition says Google Earth aided their rampage
* It asks court to direct Google to blur images
POLICE released pictures of the Mumbai terrorists yesterday as an Indian court protested that Google Earth should be banned because it aided their rampage.
A petition entered at the Bombay High Court alleges that the Google Earth service, "aids terrorists in plotting attacks".
Advocate Amit Karkhanis urged the court to direct Google to blur images of sensitive areas in the country until the case is decided.
The gunmen who attacked Mumbai on November 26 appeared to use complex GPS systems to navigate to Mumbai by sea.
They communicated by satellite phone, used mobile phones with several different SIM cards and may have monitored events as the siege unfolded via handheld Blackberry web browsers.
Police in Mumbai have said the terrorists familiarised themselves with the streets of Mumbai's financial capital using satellite images, the sole gunman captured alive said.
Yesterday, chief police investigator Rakesh Maria gave the names and aliases used by the gunmen in the attacks and showed photographs of eight of them - some from identity cards but others shots of the dead attackers.
No image was released for one man as his body was too badly burned, Mr Maria said.
Mr Maria also gave details of the districts and towns in Pakistan from where the gunmen were believed to have come.
India blamed Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba for the attacks that killed 171 people in India's financial centre last month, demanding Pakistan take action.
Pakistan intensified its crackdown on a militant group suspected in the Mumbai attacks, arresting 20 more people, but said yesterday it will not hand its citizens to India.
Also yesterday, the new head of a Jewish centre in Mumbai vowed to restore the facility devastated in the rampage. And owners of the famed Taj Mahal hotel pledged to reopen with an interfaith ceremony.

Some people have complained because they were personally visible and identifiable in the photos. People asked to be removed, because their pictures could be embarrasing, such as those cataloged here (some of these are a real hoot, take a look):

Those photos are taken
Those photos are taken manually by cameras on top of vehicles. I've read somewhere, though, that Google wanted to do something similar with live feed net cams but I haven't read anything recently about it.
...
That's correct, john.

WE have the technology. SO
WE have the technology. SO what are you bitching about?
It is not live feed, it is still shots.
Street view is great, it helps me get around and see my route before I get there. What could possibly be bad about it? If it was a live feed I could understand. But if it didn't exists "they" could just drive by themselves and see everything live.
TOO many crazies on this website.
Do you drive for UPS?
You said it helps you get around and see your route........you don't by chance work for UPS do you? I do, and where I live we don't have street view yet.........but I bet that would be great to have! There are some places that are just impossible to find.

An iPhone or other similar device with Google Maps
is awesome.
I don't know what I did before I had one, whenever I was out of town. When I was in Minneapolis this summer, my iPhone with Google Maps, and Street View, saved the day and helped me navigate that huge city and the suburbs.
I recommend it for anyone who drives for a living. I used to have a job that had me on the road for ten hours or more a day, and I'd have given anything to not have to lug around a 500+ page street atlas for my town. At least we had the atlas, though.

Why nothing nothing at all, technology could never be used for anything but good. Having every citizen cataloged, filed and all angles of their home in a photo database couldn't possibly be used for anything but the best interest of all citizens. So go baaahaaahaack to sleep nothing to see here...

Whatever technology has been released tot he public know that it is years old and newer technologies have emerged. Actually this is child's play compared to the satillite infrared technology that can show the date of a dime on your coffee table through your roof.
The time for revolution is ripe.
Do we actually think that the new microwave weapons being used in Iraq wont come home to bite us in the ass, think again.
Have a look and see what we are actually doing.
They are called direct energy weapons. Scary.

Private Road
The Private neighborhood signs kept them out of where I live. They stopped once they saw the sign. Anyone else run into this? Do you think they went in but just didn't publish the street view for the public?
Yeap I have been trying to tell people that
the military now has every foot of the earth mapped and they can deliver a bomb on any front door in the world.
Do a few demonstrations, make a few examples - Works great in world negotiations!
Two guys in a white hatchback with "Google" on the doors

My local paper did a story on these guys. They eat way too much junk food if I recall.

shit. at least the pictures were taken when i had three RP signs in the front yard. had to be last fall sometime. a car we used to have is in the drive along with a truck i no longer own.
that's pretty fucked up.
I think Google is a bit of a fun thing
for us 'common computer players' What we are allowed to play with is nothing unless you are prone to greater paranoia than is good for your mental health.
They are messing around with it, big time. Those regions we are not supposed to see a little closer are covered up. Example was when Georgia started/invaded Ossetia. Using your google search then would show you a region which had like a blanket type cover over it. All you could see were the areas well South and well North of that region.
Start looking at Afghanistan and Pakistan, check which areas are there but not really visible. Could well be the next regions for turmoil.
oohhh... you are totally on to something.
...
Mine doesn't show up...
and from what I remember....there was a post similar to this in the past and someone said the street views were available only because people put their homes up for sale and put pictures of their homes on there. I am about to sell my home, but there will be absolutely no pictures of the front of my house put on the internet.
People need to understand....most of the information the gov or anyone collects about you....you give them yourself by putting it into public places. I feel sorry for all the yahoo's who can't live a day without using facebook, myspace, and on and on and on....
You want your life to be private?..Keep it friggin private morons.
By the way .......
here's the web address if you want to see how it works in our country (see the post below)....
http://scottsbluffne.taxsifter.com/taxsifter/T-Parcelsearch.asp
Go ahead, type in Smith for an owner's name ... then when the whole list of Smith's come up, click on a property and walaa, everything you ever wanted to know ... from when it sold, to how much it sold for, to who owns it, to who used to own it, to how much the taxes are, to pics, to the floor plan, etc. etc.
that would be....
"voila".....
People, people.........
you don't have to post the pics yourself. Your county or state gov't does it. These days almost every piece of property has a picture listed in the online tax records of the counties. Every piece of property does in my rural county in NE. I can go get a picutre of any house I want, and can also get the floor plans. So it's just plain silly to think that the pic of your house showes up on Google because of something YOU'VE done.
Why so paranoid?
I am just as concerned as anybody about out government's escalating invasions of privacy. But is it really going to make a difference whether or not you put up a picture of your house on the web? I suggest you put it up because the picture will make your house much more likely to sell, and in this market you might need all the help that you can get. Anyway, if and when it does sell, it won't even be your house anymore. I guess my point is that we need to be watchful but we need to continue to live our lives at the same time.

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms - should be a convenience store, not a government agency!
Nope my house has never been
Nope my house has never been up for sale, and you can move up the street and see other houses none of them with for sale signs

There are far more sophisticated systems than this...a friend told me they can even see faces of troops on the ground in Iraq from here in the US
