Groceries for Guns: Hungry Americans surrender arms for food
USA Today, Dec. 7, 2008:
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A program to exchange guns for gifts has brought in a record number of weapons this year as residents hit hard by the economy look under the bed and in closets to find items to trade for groceries.
The annual Gifts for Guns program wound down Sunday in Compton, a working class city south of Los Angeles that has long struggled with gun and gang violence. In a program similar to ones in New York and San Francisco, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department allows residents to anonymously relinquish firearms in return for $100 gift cards for Ralphs supermarkets, Target department stores or Best Buy electronics stores.
Turning in assault rifles yields double that amount.
In years past, Target and Best Buy were the cards of choice, with residents wanting presents for the holidays.
This year, most asked for the supermarket cards, said sheriff's Sgt. Byron Woods.

I know they've had these programs for quite some time, but I foresee a similar program when things get really bad and people are starving on the national scale. One well placed shot with a $.50 round will feed a family for quite some time! These people just don't get it...though I suppose there's not many deer in Compton!

By the way I have a dozen or so weapons that are either to damaged to repair or not fit to use. Does this mean that I receive one hundred dollars per weapon turned in. No questions asked.

That's what such "buy-back" programs get:
- Junk guns
- Stolen guns
- Guns used in crimes and being disposed of before they can be discovered and used as evidence
- Gun collections turned in by spouses in messy divorces.
"No questions asked" is a powerful promise.
They stopped paying cash because there are guns that sell for less than they were offering, so they got 'em by the bushel.
Also: At least one "buy-back" ran out of funds, leaving a lot of people with neither the gun nor the reward.

I saw this story on yahoo news and immediately became violent. Ironic isn't it. This is the same old crap that fascist governments always pull. The part that pissed me off the most was where they stated the moronic police would destroy the weapons. Its obvious our government is brain washing people into thinking that weapons that are protected under the 2nd amendment are dangerous things. I bet the police are actually stock piling the weapons to use against us or destroying them so that we the people have less weapons to protect us against the corrupt government and police. Guns do not kill people. People pulling the triggers kill people. Is $100 of food worth risking your life against future robbers, police, black water, etc?

Accept food donations to the non-profit (tax deduction for those donating).
Accept cash to the non-profit (tax deduction for those donating).
Non-profit buys guns and defensive training with the cash.
Give food, gun, and defensive training certificate to persons who will sign a form saying that will attend defensive training, safely store the gun, and own the gun for several years.

By the way: We should get on the local talk shows whenever there's a "buy-back" program and talk about "receiving stolen property" "disposing of evidence" and "encouraging burglary".
