There, Their, They're GET IT RIGHT!

0 votes

Look... I don't post much on this forum, but I am a bit ashamed of some of the language here.

We should get this clear. There, Their, and They're are NOT interchangeable!

There- A place Example: Let's go over THERE.
Their- Possessive Example: THEIR goal is complete tyranny!
They're- A contraction, short for "They are" Example THEY'RE going to arrest us as terrorists.

We would look a lot more credible if the daily paulers wrote correct english.

I figure that since we're all here to learn,

it's OK to learn the definitions of these words along with economics, the philosophy of liberty, investing, food storage, and everything else we discuss around here. Every little bit of improvement helps. Every day I write down the things I learn, and good quotes from DP, and other new ideas to google in a big fat journal. If I needed to learn the definitions of the these three words, I would write them down and tape them to the wall by the computer and refer to the notes when needed until I had them down pat. But that's just me.

Someone I know

and admire is fond of saying, "Freedom is popular," and "Liberty is a big tent." So, now Freedom is for the spelling literate only? Liberty is for the punctuation literate only? Otherwise your not credible? Your not worthy to be part of this movement? I didn't realize there were requirements other then passion, perseverance and the absolute conviction that the message of Liberty and Freedom transends all regardless of your backgroud, education or your grammar.

This place needs more

This place needs more semicolons; don't you think?

Yes;

Ever hear of

the "misplaced comma" story?

It's popular in Europe.

The judge sent a message about the verdict of a man on trial. His message was transferred to the court clerk who passed it along to the prison gaurds.

The judge wrote:
Hang not, innocent

The clerk's message:
Hang, not innocent

Moral of the story: A misplaced comma has the power to kill.

I ran your post through my grammar checker.

It wasn't pretty.

Also, your use of an ellipses (...) is incorrect, both in style and context. You might like to try a dash (--) when trying to emphasize a point. The "en" dash being preferable to the "em" dash.

Unfortunately it's not just spelling

If it were just superficial spelling mistakes it would be tolerable, but many of the posters here haven't taken philosophy and are not very rigorous in their search for truth. They seem to be skeptical of government (as they should be) but credulous when it comes to things they read on the internet. The proper search for truth requires you to be skeptical of all sources.

I also think that many have a problem distinguishing evidence from speculation. Many seem to think speculation is as good as actual evidence.

Oh Brother!

What does antiseptic spelling and grammar have to do with being credible?
Do you think George Bush could put a proper sentence together without a speech writer? Is he credible?
Some of us are not writing novels for the ages here.
I spend enough time reading and writing posts to contribute to the conversation without having to read over every single word to check for proper grammar or spelling.
Spend more time concerning yourself with growing the movement and less time worried about their grammar.

ooooo

bad example!! I think you proved his point!

it's kinda funny really

We all make mistakes now and then, but some never learned grammar and spelling. I know I got a D in 8th grade gov school grammar, but I realized later that I had to learn in order to succeed in my profession. It's a life-long goal of mine and I'm still learning.

It reflects who we are, just like clothing and grooming. People do notice and judgments are made. Lose and loose is another one that we see all the time here. I just keep my mouth shut and move on...

Pleze -

that is "lern ed" not "learned"

Sum people thunk they is purfect!

Everyone Slips Once in a While

I am usually rather particular about my grammar and spelling, but I have made more than my share of mistakes -- including the one described in this thread. When you are trying to make a good argument and it is late in the day, sometimes you just miss it. It is no big deal. People can figure out what you are trying to say from the context. It is part of the nature of forums.

Now, if you see these kinds of errors in an article, now you can start to be a bit more concerned. Quite frankly, the quality of writing on this forum is generally very good.

Your write, of course....

Homonyms have always been my downfall.
