Showering With Half-Naked Teenage Girls and Homeland Security - A True Story
When I was at work at the hospital yesterday, I responded to a "Code Orange" in the ER department. They were holding a mock hazardous material (Hazmat) training drill.
Since 9/11, the Department of Homeland Security has been giving money to communities across America to prepare their emergency response teams for incidents involving exposure to toxic substances.
The "victims" for our drill were six teenage girls (recruited from our local high school) who were supposedly covered with a toxic powder. After EMS brought them to the hospital ambulance garage, they were instructed to strip off all of their "contaminated" clothing (down to bikinis) and go through a hastily erected Decon shower.
Looking on were nurses in Hazmat suits, aides with towels and blankets, a team leader with a bull horn shouting instructions, and me. Painted on the floor of the garage were big yellow stripes. I was told that if anyone not wearing a Hazmat suit stepped over the line, they would have to join the girls in the shower.
For just a moment I thought about fulfilling a high school fantasy, but decided that my wife would never believe it was an accident.
These are YOUR tax dollars at work, folks.
Homeland Security can't stop an invasion of 20 million illegal Mexicans, but if Al Qaeda ever wants to dust Iowa with plutonium, we'll be ready.

But knowing her, she probably took pictures of people walking around in Hazmat suits.

What's really sad is...
What's really sad is that they are wasting all that money on these drills about a NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) attack and yet not a single gas mask has been sent to the population.
Instead, they are destroying them by the thousands (so they don't have to waste money on storage and inventory... so they say). You tell me, what's more effective... having a team of incompetent government goons direct people during a NBC attack to decon showers (imagine the lines there!) or sending every man, woman, and child in America a gas mask and telling them to have it ready in case something happens?
As a libertarian my thought is that the government should do neither, but if you're going to spend so much money, at least do something that will actually help.

In Las Vegas I was on our NBC response team....
We were given laminated cards to show that we were designated emergency doctors.
I was supposed to receive a call telling me where to go in case of attack.
They were going to set up Decon showers in the parking lots of the area hospitals with triage and treatment tents.
For some types of attacks, this approach would be just fine.
But for a DIRTY BOMB I told my wife to grab the kids and run for the hills.
And I would have been right behind them.
You don't decontaminate someone who has inhaled plutonium.
You can try to keep them calm and pain free while they die.
But even that wouldn't be possible if you had tens of thousands of victims.
They would all FEEL perfectly strong and healthy except for the fact that they would have received a lethal dose of radiation.
And some of them would know it.
Then soon ALL of them would know it.
And some of them might not accept their fate with complete serenity.

And that's where the gas mask is important. It's the radioactive dust that really gets into your lungs and system. Yes, direct radiation exposure is bad, but breathing it is orders of magnitude worse. A gas mask filters out that dust.
Plus it can protect you from those FEMA goons with their tear gas!

I'm not sure.
Everybody was "on the clock" (15 people?) except maybe the girls. I don't know if they were volunteers just getting to skip class or if they were getting minimum wage. I should have asked.
The EQUIPMENT probably costs a lot of money, but mostly can be reused.
And the nice thing is a lot of it could come in handy someday (like during pandemic influenza, for example).
