Anyone from California?

One of my husband's co-workers in Ca told him that they are only allowed to have fires in their fireplaces (in their house!) on certain days based on air quality readings. And if they have smoke coming from their chimney on the wrong day they get fined. Please tell me this is not true??

Washington state, too.

So, don't try to keep yourself warm if you know what's good for you. The Gestapo will kick down your door and drag you to a cell that is heated with coal.

Spare the air days!

Yes, on "Spare the air days", anyone burning wood in the fireplace could be fined. If any is interested here is the phone number we have to call before we can use our fireplace. With the nights getting down in the 40's now it really sucks when we can't use the fireplace.

Yep...

it is true! We are here in San Joaquin County, but we burn when we damn well please. Haven't heard anything about anyone getting busted for keeping warm.

Born in Long Beach (summer of ’61).

But I was mostly raised in the Black Hills (South Dakota side). I still lived with Dad & Mom when they moved to the tri-state area (South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa.

I still can’t figure out why anyone would move to Sioux City, Iowa on purpose.

At least one can carry a gun, theoretically without a hassle. This old guy in my neighborhood told me that he had to pull his gun on a police officer who was conducting an unlawful vehicle search. The old dude could have been yarning me a tale. Almost every policeman I’ve ever met around here has been very friendly and respectful, although I've had run-ins. Some cops [and many bureaucrats!!!] are just irritating morons who act like life by the book often means more than the real-life order of things.

In response to your question; “I would be very surprised if this were not true.”

S'Truth

In the South Bay Area, today was a "spare-the-air" day. I heard it on the radio. If the police see smoke, they can give you a ticket. So said the radio. One is obligated to know when they declare a spare-the-air. Of course, there is a web site. "Updated daily before noon." http://www.baaqmd.gov/

Not that anybody pays attention to "burn days" around here...

Yes, this has been true in Sacramento County for the past year or so. But pretty much nobody pays much attention to it when it comes to wood burning stoves. I think those getting ticketed are probably in a dispute with a neighbor about something else and their neighbor "turns them in" for smoke coming from their fireplace on a no-burn day. Pretty much everyone I know ignores it -- it's been quite cold here (to us California wimps).

This has been true

in El Dorado County, Calif (east of Sacramento to the Nevada border) for 20 to 25 years. I'm from there, but haven't lived there since 1983.

I came from there

3-1/2 years ago. We had no spare the air days. We have a wood-burning fireplace and burned it every day. All of my friends and relatives still do. So if it is a law, it is being ignored.

Perhaps the no burn days

are/were for non-house warming fires, such as using the burning barrel out in the yard. My dad had to keep track of whether it was a no burn day or not when he needed to take care of burning the garbage. In any case, I doubt that the rules were as draconian as in San Francisco.

That's it

We had burn days for burning the junk outside. Correct. We had to follow the schedule. So, my husband would keep track of that. I thought you meant burning fires in the fireplace.

Yes

For being the "Ahead of the rest of the nation" state we are the worst when it comes to freedom.

I have a lot of

family in Cali still. I haven't heard that. It might be in different parts of the state though. The latest fires were down south, and I've no idea what they're doing down there.

There terrified

of smoke out they're.

Yes it's true

L.A.'s beaches are also devoid of fire pits for grilling, campfires, just chilling etc. They do have pits in San Diego and you can build fires at Grover Beach (wonderful place to camp right on the beach for about $7 a night).

Puppets come and puppets go but the world's stage is getting cluttered.

I'm a fourth gen Diegite

and I've never heard of Grover Beach. Where is it? LA beaches suck (except for Rincon, and it's on the county line).

North Cali

got hit real hard with fires early in the season. The first one started a mile from my office building. But air quality cleared up a lot once the main fires were out. My mother's neighbor is getting the ok to burn brush and no restrictions about when to burn so it's not all of northern Cali.

Yup, it's true.

The co-worker is correct. This is also true for outdoor fires, like if you have a fire pit in your backyard. However, there actually is a way around this. The law doesn't apply to fires used for cooking. So, if you want to light a fire on a "no burn" day, just stick a marshmallow on a stick and go for it :).

Stick a hot dog onto each of the tines of a metal leaf rake.
