Million without power, we can learn from this:
Power is out in New England from an ice storm. My sister just called me from New Hampshire. She had gotten an old rotary phone at a yard sale in case the power went out. Pray for these people, it may be 3 or more days without power. My elderly parents, despite having a wood/oil furnace, can't use it, as it requires electricity for the fan. My sister has been begging them to stock up on water and food, which they didn't, so they have no way to get water, other than out of the hot water heater. They have no way to cook, either. My mom refused to let my dad put a wood stove in their fireplace. Fortunately they have a fireplace, and can shut themselves in the kitchen with it, to stay somewhat warm. They are better off than others though, who only have electric heat and range. We should all learn from this.

I have
been working this ice storm up in Fitchburgh Mass, so I had to miss the tea party. But the money is real good. But I can tell you it is crazy there. No one is prepared for anything up there. What I have noticed is that most people dont have a lot of food stored up. The lines at McDonalds and food stores were out the door. Traffic is backed up for miles. Not many have generators and some are getting sick from the cold and carbon monoxide poisoning. I feel if there was an uprising in this country it could never be controled. My cell phone does not have a signal while I am in Fitchburgh working. I am learning alot from being up there working.. People just live in the moment unless you are on this site. So there isnt any such thing as being over prepared. Keep stocking up folks
If you are still without power, FEMA has good advice online

BIG HEARTS
Well Let's hope that those that have will help those that don't. Be a good neighbor it's Patriotic. If you live in New England a wood stove is a blessing. Last year we went the whole winter only spending about 150$ on oil. "One who cuts his own wood gets warmed twice"..One thing that I do think is lame but because I respect private property rights I don't push the issue is these days because most don't burn wood anymore at least not like we used to a hundred years ago there is mass amounts of dead wood just lying around the forests in new england. We have about 6 cords right now and about 2/3 of that was just lying on the ground starting to rot. Although most folks that have a lot of land won't let anyone clean up and utilize the great wood lying around. Some will and we have been lucky to have a neighbor with a lot of land that has no problem if we scavenge dead wood lying around. Most will make it through this. The biggest worry I would have is frozen water pipes.

waiting on the edge of one I can't escape

Doesn't Seem Like a Big Deal
I'm in New Hampshire, and we get this every year. If you don't have a wood stove, then you can always go visit a friend or neighbor who does. If you have the money, then I'd recommend putting in a wood stove if you live in the Northeast. Right now we obviously have power, but there have been plenty of 2-3 day spells in my life where we lost power in the middle of winter.
Putting in the stove might be expensive for someone who's poor, but the wood is not expensive. If you can't pay for wood then you must have been cold last year with oil prices where they were.
The media likes to exaggerate any crisis. People are tougher than they give themselves credit for. If you're not elderly then you could likely weather the cold for a day or two just by putting on your winter clothes. I'm sure some people are having a tough couple of days, but IMO this is a normal part of living in New England. People wonder why yankees are cranky.
i don't think wood is inexpensive.
i'm in maine.
if you have to buy it and you don't have alot of money and it gets really cold at nite, which it has it's expensive for alot of people.
there are alot of rural people who are poor.
the going rate here is about $225 - $250 a cord. if you need to buy it alot of people cannot afford that.
also, there are alot of elderly on fixed incomes, have furnaces, too old to do the wood stove and don't have the $'s to buy it either.
and yes this is what happens up here. and people are tougher etc.
but the bottom line is that for alot of people just shelling out $'s for wood or oil or propane is not an option.
that's all i'm saying.

i agree heres the twist
the corporate elite /merchants/government have destroyed the nuclear family in this country over the course of the last 60 years or so,,,,,,,,,,no wonder old people cant do the woodstove thing.........there families should be there to do it for them whilst the elders watch the youngers ..........you know community living..............what a concept..................split the energy use and the chores and all that other stuff called living...........and you can rely on each other without a natural disaster...................but if we were taught to do that our bills would be way less and the consumption would be less and PROFITS for the merchants would dwindle..................no wonder we have been deeducated................

I went offshore on October
I went offshore on October 13th and I am still on the barge. I have not been able to go home yet and was unprepared for the weather. I was in galveston harbor sitting around on a anchor waiting on weather. The other day it was snowing like mad and unfortunatly I was only wearing a cheap walmart sweater. We are only allowed to smoke outside and it was so cold that people were taking 4 drags of their cigerette and throwing the rest away. No the moral of the story is next time I'll pack a damn jacket even though it hardly ever gets cold down here especially like its been lately.
are you working
or what? why go on a barge?
Northwest getting slammed with cold storm also
"The National Weather Service canceled a winter storm warning for the central Puget Sound region, but the warning remained in effect for the Olympics, Cascades and Eastern Washington, where a strong weather system was forecast to bring heavy snow, including up to 11 inches in the Spokane area.
A storm watch remained in effect for the Port Angeles area and the coast, and the Cascades and Olympics were expected to get 1 to 2 feet of snow by Saturday morning. A blizzard warning was posted for the southern Cascades, with nearly a foot of snow and gusts to 65 mph possible."

good grief...
unless you live here in new england as i do, i am in maine, please refrain from giving advice.
some of these suggestions are far from what alot of people can actually do - such as stock up, buy more clothes, buy a couple of cords cuz it's cheap etc.
there are alot of rural areas and people don't have te $'s to do either.
stocking up is NOT cheap - wood is NOT cheap.
goodwill and salvation for cheap clothes are few and far between.
alot of people are dirt poor and their kids don't even make it to the dentist.
it's not all like that. there are wealthy and middle class.
but the poor people that are gonna get hurt.
allot have old cars. no stickers. many miles from any town.
their only option is social services and that's run dry.
so please unless it makes sense don't post anything.

Come on now..
People who can read this have internet.. I'm sure they can spare money from what ever it is they do and get prepared.
I guess my biggest problem is you're not being "bright" sunny..

I know some people who live
I know some people who live paycheck to paycheck. They never seem to have enough money to put more than a few bucks of gas in the car. Bills go unpaid for months. They are probably not prepared for anything.
Yet, one of them has a $500 cell phone with a $200 monthly phone bill. I just found out about the phone yesterday. I was a bit shocked when I heard that. The $200 every month could be put to much better use. Heck, they should be using one of the free phones and on a $50 per month plan. The $500 from their high tech phone and additional $150 per month could certainly go a long way towards other necessities.
...
oruval,
sorry bud, i just don't agree with you.
being able to have internet is no way relative to the cost of staying warm for the winter.
sunny = sunrise = dawn which is my birth name.
that's how i got the name sunny.

Just lost a tree
here in the Seattle area.It landed
on my sons 1965 mustang car parts.Oh is he going to be upset when he gets home!!!!!!
I am in the midst of this catastrophe,
My city of Gardner, Mass, has been devasted. There are trees down are wires down all over the place. Even the big high tension lines have been knocked out. I didn't have a generator, but luckily, I know someone who could provide one and promptly hooked it to my furnace, fridge, and of course wireless router. My folks had a generator, but did not have it connected to their furnace, so I hitched it up for them. My best friend and his elderly dad don't have a generator, but they got a propane kitchen stove to heat their home.
The temperature is supposed to drop into the teens tonight, alot of people are going to be cold. I fear alot of elderly could freeze to death before it is over.
The ice is still on the trees, so if the cold front comes through with a lot of wind, it could knock out a lot more wires.
This is a wakeup call to me to be more prepared.
Luckily, I can drive 30 miles to Concord to get more gas for the generator, but alot of other folks don't even have a generator and its gonna get real cold. This could be a major catastrophe.
Peace

Cars run for a long time on very little gasoline
so maybe some could warm in their cars.
Carbon Monoxide
Watch out for Carbon Monoxide though. May want to take one of those detectors in there with you if you opt for that.
Plenty of blankets should keep people warm enough.
Carbon Monoxide is a danger,
and I also fear that people will try to heat their homes by unsafe methods and have more home fires.
I pray the power is restored soon, but I heard that it could take a few days.

Unfortunately
You were right, I heard at least one man died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning thanks to this generator.
Gov of Mass
said no power restored before Monday. My parents (here in New England we never use the word folks) are in Ludlow, Ma, and my daughter is at college in Keene, NH. Talked to both today and luckily all have power. Roads aren't that bad either. Down here in CT, a couple towns over is having a hell of a time with flooding. The Yantic River is 3 feet over flood level.
Colchester, New London County, Connecticut
In November 2006, I was working outside and was approached by
a guy in a pick up truck asking if I needed any firewood. We're not into fires, we don't get that cold, they can so messy, etc. etc. I declined the firewood offer. Within two weeks, we had an ice storm and power went out for several days. My neighbors had a tree taken down the year before and had plenty of firewood--so they, very graciously, kept me in firewood.
The next year, same time, a guy came asking if I needed firewood. I bought a cord and decided that it was insurance against a winter power outage, which we haven't experienced since. In the mean time, a big branch fell down and we got cut up, so now I'm set if the power goes off. I could last a couple of weeks before I had start busting up the wood furniture. I'm also making paper logs to stick in with the firewood.
we can definitely learn from this...
as we're all going to be facing that in just over a year.
please let this be a lesson
please let this be a lesson to every one.. you can get epa certified wood burning stoves that you can burn anytime. it is also very cheap to buy 2 cords of firewood.. food, water.. this is teaching us a lesson! what will the whole country do when the dollar or the economy crashes?! prepare and stock up.. its insurance folks!
