Survival Food 2009.

It's going to be a long, hard winter, I fear, and that's without anything extraordinary occurring around the time of the Inauguration. The economy is going down.

We're going into a great depression. Money is deflationary for the short-term, at least.

What are you buying, or planning to buy, to further your survival food plans for yourself and your family?

Let's have a good, friendly discussion that shares helpful ideas.

Do you eat grasshoppers?

Cause a can of chunk soup sounds better to me.

I've heard Africans fry them

I've heard Africans fry them up like popcorn shrimp.

Personally I'd rather put aside Ranch Style Beans, though.

I

am thinking of buying a couple hot houses to grow food in. Has anyone used these in the winter to grow food. Or any ideas on this subject. I am also going for my gun permit next week. Also stocked up on lots of food, and freezers full. I have 2 back up generators and now i need to have gas available.Plenty of gold and silver

You

Already have a "Gun Permit".. it's called the second ammendment. If you have to qualify and pay for a right...is it a right or a "grant" from the gov't? A grant can be revoked.. a right is in-alienable.
I'd rather be judged by 12, than carried by 6!
"..shall not be infringed."

"..shall not be infringed."

On the other hand, if a gun

On the other hand, if a gun permit makes someone more comfortable with daily concealed carry, what's wrong with that?

We have a considerable stock

but not serious yet. Have about 3-4 months of food supplies, enough to get us through the New England winter anyway. I have 2 freezers full of meat, and one freezer full of fresh harvested berries and corn from our fall harvest. Cabinets are stocked with pasta, rice, veggies, legumes, and fruit. Lower cabinets are stocked with flour, sugars, vinegars, etc. We have enough charcoal and fluid for outdoor cooking, and some kerosene for indoor heating if we must. I hate kerosene, but if we must, we must. We also have a freshwater spring about 8 minutes away, I stock up on water every time the back of my car is full of empty bottles.
Also stocked on paper goods and toiletries, pharmacy and first aid.
I just need a gun, our yard is loaded with deer right now. In fact our financial advisor comes here in the middle of the night with a bow looking for a hunt.
We're not ready yet, but at least a few months supplies to last us til spring. And it looks like we have a bit longer to go til the shtf.

I live in the middle of a

I live in the middle of a city; hence my focus is on a 2-3 months supply, and not the 'permanent off grid survival' that would be feasible in a more rural setting. If things get so bad I can't restock in 2 months, this place will be a war and disease zone, and I'm out of here anyway. And fat chance finding a moving van to transport more than the essentials in such a situation.

I currently have about 100 gals of tap water in buckets and bottles, a Berkey with replacement cartridges to run it though to make it drinkable and tasty (want to get a second Berkey or Aquarain as well, in case one breaks / gets stolen. They're stainless steel, but still, water really has me paranoid like nothing else). I want to keep upping the water amount to 200 gals, and see if I can find some cheap way of carbonating. (Not really necessary, but hey, I'm a soda junkie..)

I also have pasta, beef jerky, meal replacements, energy bars and canned food to see me through for a while.

Plus some cash and metals hidden in various hard to reach spots around the house. And guns and ammo. And my bankbox is walking distance away.

I also have a good stash of different size flashlights and headlights, as well as batteries. And a radio / wideband scanner. plus another smaler multiband radio.

And propane tanks and camp stove, as well as a smaller hiking / climbing cooking setup if things get really bad.

I'm currently in the process of upgrading my alarm system.

What I don't have is a proper deep freezer (chest) a woodstove (I do have a fireplace, and it's not really that cold here), a grain mill and grains, dehydrators, a vegetable garden out back (Though I do have a lemon tree) and any way of capturing rain water. If I ever get around to move to a more rural location, this is all high on my priority list. I also don't have redundant internet hookups, only cable. I could bluetooth from my laptop to my 3g cellphone, but it's a bit slow and cumbersome.

Neither do I have a truck capable of driving over riot debris and dead bodies, but I hope things won't get that bad. Were I to buy a car now, instead of 18 months ago, it would definitely be higher on my list of concerns. Well, at least my car is fast on smooth pavement :)

Have you considered some

Have you considered some sort of small motorcycle with off-road tires, and your food stores being freeze-dried, stuffed in a duffel?

That, a good BOB and your personal firearms might get you out of Dodge in dicey times. What do you think?

OMG

Riot debris and dead bodies? Ewww. Never thought that far into it. Do you think my beloved Pontiac Aztec AWD loaded with liberty stickers could do it?

Infinitely better than my

Infinitely better than my yuppie racer, that's for sure :)

Once riot cops starts patrolling the neighborhood, you may want to get rid of stickers containing the word 'revolution' and such.

My stickers contain the words

revolution, impeachment, libertarian, peace, civil liberties and of course They Might Be Giants (my favorite band).

I would like to

buy nails, hammer, and hand saws. When I become homeless maybe I could build a house out of tree limbs.

Prepare & Share the Message of Freedom through Positive-Peaceful-Activism.

TONS of food and bottled water just in case.

use the time in 2009 to stock up on lots of food that doesn't require a lot of heat to make.

and get lots of warm clothes and shoes/boots as 2010 is gonna be cold and 2011 will be even colder with limited and eventually no electricity.

Warm clothes is a great idea. You can cut back dramatically on energy and fuel usage by wearing warm clothes inside.

Bottled water is still very

Bottled water is still very cheap by the gallon. I agree, that's a good thing.
If you keep water in a cool, dark place, it should last long after its posted 'expiration dates'.

And just to be on the safe

And just to be on the safe side, there's nothing wrong with running bottled water though a good filter if it's getting a bit plasticky tasting. Depending on the filter, this ought to help.
