Advice on Guns
Submitted by sambo722rt on Fri, 12/12/2008 - 21:04
Well my wife and I are gonna finally break down and buy a gun for the home. Unfortunately other than shooting, I do not know much about them. I am asking for suggestions on what to purchase. I want something effective but not too expensive. Something easy too use and be able to grab quick in the case of a home invasion.
Please no stupid comments or suggestions.

Keep it simple
Get a Remington 870 18" Barrel Shotgun and a nice used Glock 19 or 21.
The shotgun is the ultimate home defense weapon and the Glock can be used for self-defense in situations where a shotgun won't work. Shouldn't cost more than $700 total.
800 dollars at least,for quality.
Your life depends on it.
get a 1911 handgun in 45acp
kimber brand:
elite2s series 1911 45acp
colt brand:
government 70 series firing mechanism 1911
I prefer colt 70 series( i got a ww1 repro that has never jammed ever).
.
if you want distance and accuracy from a rifle, get a .308 or 30-06 (common rounds). anything further would be 300 winchester magnum(used mostly by experienced shooters).
a bolt action will have better accuracy ,but is better for long range
a shotgun is best for close range, unless you can get your hands on a nice m3 grease gun.Ar-15's are also alright I guess, but I dont like the .223 round its scronny and Id rather have a shotgun.

Shotgun all the way
Home-defense versions. Can't go wrong and nothing will be more effective if you really have to use it. This country was founded on the shotgun!

I would say get a modern 9mm
I would say get a modern 9mm pistol for your first gun, assuming you are willing to invest the small amount of effort required to learn how to field strip, clean and lube it. I'd especially advice you to look at the Smith&Wesson M&P, either the full size or the compact.
They are easier to shoot fast and accurate than a revolver, holds two to three times the number of rounds, and is a lot easier to reload. The M&P series is also almost ridiculously well designed wrt recoil control. 9mm in general in pretty light on recoil, but in the M&P, even the .40 feels like a 9 feels in many other polymer guns. Which means you can shoot it with more speed and accuracy with the same amount of practice.
The reason I say handgun over shotgun, is it can always be with you. Even if you are not planning on carrying it outside, most home invasions don't likely start by the bad guys knocking on your door and waiting for you to go get your shotgun or rifle. And in most households outside of Kabul, Baghdad and Mogadishu, carrying a longarm around wherever you go is a bit unusual to say the least.
With a pistol, as soon as you come home (assuming you're not carrying outside), you can put on a holster. After a while you won't even notice it's there. Until you need it. Then you'll really, really notice.
If you live in an urban / suburban setting, it's also easier to practice with a handgun than a longarm, and it's cheaper pretty much everywhere.
And, should things get bad, having, and knowing how to use, a gun you can take with you on errands, may be a life saver one day.
Another thing favoring the M&P's are they adapt well to lasergrips, which I feel is a very worthy addition to any handgun. Just remember to practice using regular sights, so you don't become totally dependent on the laser.

The place I went

If you've never shot a
If you've never shot a handgun, and want to learn at your own pace, and it's specifically a gun for home defense, I recommend a single action Ruger revolver in .357 magnum caliber. You can practice in a .357 mag with .38 special cartridges, which are also the same .357 bullet diameter. (Don't ask why it's called a .38--there's no logical answer.)
If you never learn anything more about shooting, a single action is probably your safest, easiest choice to shoot. If you decide you want a pistol they would endorse at Gunsite, Arizona--designed for fending off hordes of screaming enemy soldiers---you can always upgrade later.

2 firearms
-Mossberg 12 gauge
-357 revolver Smith&Wesson
Both are inexpensive, reliable, and cover a multitude of situations.
The 12 ga. can be loaded with birdshot for general light defense, to buckshot for nasty defense, to slugs to blow doors off. Your wife will have no problem shooting birdshot.
The 357 revolver can be loaded with 357 rounds for full power, or 38 special, for less kick (your wife could handle the 38 load no prob). A revolver can be left loaded for long periods of time, without having to worry about "rotating" the magazines, to keep the spring from wearing out. The revolver requires much less care and feeding then the semi-auto.
Those two together are a great pair.
You must spend quite a bit of time pondering safety and security. What happens if you have guest, children and/or family in the house. How will you store and secure your firearms. What types of situations will you plan for?
Imagine you keep your gun on your nightstand. You run off to work, forgetting to lock up the firearm. What kind of potential horrible mistake could come about from that? You have to consider any number of things....
It's a serious responsibility.

ditto on the mossberg
Santa is getting me a 20 guage mossberg with a pistol grip for home protection but would love a nice 357 too!
No children in home but/and training and safety is of utmost responsibility!
Oh and Santa.... a shotgun for long range...? Any reccomendations for a lady rifleman? a 22?

A rifle you say? :)
Why not--instead of some semi-auto thing---try a Marlin 30-30? Best short-range rifle made, IMHO.

I want the best long range rifle
if you are outgunned ...and a superior force of some type then the advantage of an accurate long range is your best defense! 300-500yards?

I love levers. I'd take it
I love levers.
I'd take it it .45 LC or .357 mag, or .44mag if Marlin could ever get around to rifle theirs more appropriately. Hot .357 is within 10% of 30-30 out of a 16" barrel, and the tubular mags hold more rounds. There are also infinitely more appropriate defensive loadings in .357 than 30-30.
But 30-30 is nice as well, especially for rural areas, where over penetration is less of a concern.
If you are wanting a weapon for home protection...
I suggest a shotgun...if you want a pistol go to a shooting range and try them out, they are a personal preference type of thing.
Nothing better
than a 12 gage pump shotgun for the home, it is inexpensive and you shouldn't miss your target with it.
But they are awfully
messy for "in home" defense....
lol.
