Is there any reason we can't just found Galt's Gulch?

I'm reading Atlas Shrugged right now (and I'm loving it).
Sure, it's fiction... but if things got bad enough, can't we all just go live in a remote, hidden place and have a self-sustaining community with a gold currency? hahaha...
Maybe it's just me, but since I'm from Colorado originally (where Galt's Gulch is located in the novel) and haven't been back there for a couple of years, and it's a self sustaining community with gold currency and independent individualists.... it sounds like heaven to me....

Wish I was reading Atlas Shrugged
Wish I was reading Atlas Shrugged for the first time right now. What a great experience it was. It would be harrowing to read it in day and age too. Everyone should buy copies for their uninitiated loved ones as holiday presents.

You guys have it all wrong.
You have to start small.
Wikipedia "Nauru". Basically it's one of the world's smallest sovereign republics. It's an island that's located in the middle of the pacific, halfway between the US, Australia, China, and Japan. A few thousand libertarians is all it would take to create a parliamentary majority and the world's first free state.
have you been?

Alas I have not. I do
Alas I have not. I do however have a good understanding of the Pacific region and its history and figure that if libertarianism is going to have success anywhere, it's going to have to start somewhere small. There are actually a lot of good candidate countries in the region, but Nauru in particular remains the best choice for a number of reasons.
I would like to visit it in the coming years though.
What do you all think about
What do you all think about buying some land in another country where the cost of living is much cheaper? Say Philippines or Latin America? Something semi developed already. The Chinese set up China town communities around the world over the years, why couldn't there be American expat towns?
New Zealand
The south island is magic and it has a small, English-speaking population.

much cheaper
there are many places that you can live like a king on about $500 a month, its hard to find real prices over the internet though(highly inflated for dumb rich foreigners)
research esl or teaching english overseas forums for some locations and data though
not sure how serious others are but we could set up a site and forum dedicated to it pretty easily if there is enough interest
New Hampshire's too cold =(
So's Wyoming I reckon..

The Free State Project is
The Free State Project is kind of attempting a version of this, operating within the current legal and political context of the country. They seem to be going strong both in New Hampshire and Wyoming.
Areas like Yearning for Zion Ranch in Texas also has similarities to Galt's Gulch. I'm sure there are all kinds of 'economic' transactions taking place there with little tax accounting and reporting to outside authorities.
As long as the members of the community trust each other, and resolve differences without going to outside society for legal redress, relatively self sufficient societies on private land can remain fairly opaque. As the mess involving Yearning for Zion earlier this year demonstrated, as soon as someone breaks the shell, all hell breaks lose, as there's nothing the sheeple appreciates more than fear mongering wrt those who seemingly successfully have chosen to live differently. So it really pays to select one's community members with care, and treat each fairly.
Perhaps somewhat less overtly idealistic, I also feel that simply keeping liberty in mind whenever opportunity / necessity to move crops up, will over time tend to concentrate us. Just as gays and liberals naturally tending to want to be with those like minded, over time resulted in San Francisco, so Ron Paul'ers will also tend to move to areas full of those like minded. I know I will take that into account when time comes to move.
At the limit, should we become concentrated enough to have Ron Paul people both as governor and with a majority in a state's congress, my feeling is that many of those against us will choose to leave (Traffic tickets and other state levies payable in gold, open carry of military arms, no funds available to fight a drug war and zero public health care, schools or welfare should provide authoritarians across the political spectrum with a bit of an incentive), while those pro liberty will flock there in droves, amplifying existing trends.
They wouldn't allow it
There's a history of people trying to found their own societies, e.g., offshore or on an island. It doesn't take long for the nearest government to pounce on them.
There is simply no way on Earth to found your own small system without approval from the United Nations, and you won't get it if you base your system on proper principles.
To say "there's a history"
To say "there's a history" implies it's happened many times and governments pounced on them many times.
So far as I know only one case exists--the King of Tonga vs. the "Minerva Island" group, in the 1970s. In my opinion, the King of Tonga was probably justified in his actions, since the self-proclaimed 'libertarian' behind the group was an ass, and his followers were essentially squatters on land they had no claim to possess.

You state, "There is simply no way on Earth to found your own small system without approval from the United Nations, and you won't get it if you base your system on proper principles.".
I would ask you for a link. Link to your proper principles Please as to why this can't occur? Remember, the U.N is still attempting to be even recognized as to their significance. If we continue to recognize their "insignificance", then they will remain "Insignificant." Do You understand the significance of their insignificance? PERIOD.
Well, the first thing the
Well, the first thing the President of the Republic of Tex--er, um--some futuristic free nation---should announce, where the Press can hear it, is "We do not recognize the authority of the United Nations."

"it is good for the establishment to adopt liberty ideology, but it is not good for those who have already adopted liberty to fall to the feet of the establishment." ~ Annica2
Already been done
Greenspan, Rubin, Bernanke, Paulson and the rest of the Randian Ubermenchen are just about to depart.
The FREE STATE PROJECT is strong and GIVING RESULTS already
We already have our own Galt's Gulch; It is called THE FREE STATE PROJECT and resides in our own NEW HAMPSHIRE.
This project is REAL, and already providing REAL results for many more years than most people here have been "awake'.
If you are looking for fancy, get no results projects this is not for you; But if you are looking to make a REAL difference and live in FREEDOM in your lifetime... then find out about what real freedom fighters are DOING NOW IN THE REAL WORLD.
www.freestateproject.org
"Are you frustrated at the loss of freedom and responsibility in America, while the growth of government and taxes continues unabated? Do you want to live in strong communities where your rights are respected, and people exercise responsibility for themselves and in their dealings with each other?
If you answered "yes" to those questions, then the Free State Project has a solution for you.
What the Free State Project is... The Free State Project is an effort to recruit 20,000 liberty-loving people to move to New Hampshire. We are looking for neighborly, productive, tolerant folks from all walks of life, of all ages, creeds, and colors who agree to the political philosophy expressed in our Statement of Intent, that government exists at most to protect people's rights, and should neither provide for people nor punish them for activities that interfere with no one else.
When you sign our Statement of Intent, you signal your commitment to move to the chosen free state, New Hampshire, within five years of obtaining 19,999 other people who commit to move. The more signatures we get, the more secure people can be in their decision to move, because they know that many other people will also be moving— enough to make a real difference! You don't have to wait until we have 20,000 signatures to move, of course, but that option is there to let you be more secure in your decision. "

I have nothing against the
I have nothing against the FSP. I was involved with the project until they chose NH and I wish them well. It certainly is a viable option especially for those on the east coast who wish to remain there.
I will say Idaho has everything to offer and more and has as many and more results then the FSP and NH. 24% for Ron Paul and in the northern parts of the state and in this particular area in the 30% and 40% range and some almost 50%.
Everyone has their preferences and I say what ever you want to do go for it the more freedom loving areas we have the better. Pooling our resources where we can will give us more power to effect change and ride out the coming storms.
This is a bold move just like the FSP and I am tired of sitting around complaining so I am taking action.
If anyone is serious about exploring the possibilities then go to the link and get involved.

Galt's Gulch was composed of some of the most successful business persons in it's fictional world. None of us are wealthy last I checked.
Better to buy an island anyway than simply buy up some U.S, land in the boonies.

Wyoming Is Cheaper
Wyoming has projects going on with acres as low as $995 a pop in 40 acre (approx) lots. Just Google "wyoming land $995".
I have been recently
I have been recently informed there is land in the area for $750 to $800 an acre. I like Wyoming but Idaho has more to offer IMO especially with climate and this particular area has no building codes etc.
Something to consider that was mentioned earlier is that if we got enough interest and enough land we could have our own township and truly have a Galts gulch.
I see no reason though why a group could not do something similar in Wyoming if they so desired.

My theory is that the "Get Prepared!" link on your bottom line prevents us from being able to "reply" to you. Could you tinker with that and see what happens? Thanks.
