Should free market individuals apply for FAFSA?
I’ve been lurking for more than a year but I’m going to post now.
Like most of you I believe the state shouldn't be involved in
education at all (and perhaps the state shouldn't even exist) but
should we reject any federal programs that can benefit us or should we participate in them? I am talking about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It really is an oxymoron since the federal government doesn't aid in anything but only gives back a small percentage of the mass loot it has taken from American citizens.
My basic question is should I take money from the Department of Education when I believe that it should be abolished? Would taking the money make me a hypocrite or should I feel justified getting money that was taxed from my elder family members?
My grants have covered two quarters of tuition plus a large
supplement for other needs and I can get more. I just found out how much of a waste that money was since I can get $16 per credit or less through AP exams, as opposed to $75 per credit at a community college. (Anyone can take them and classes are not required. One can even get a two-year degree this way.) Everyone in my family believes I should take the grants but I am not so sure. They say they feel cheated if I don’t take it. So would I be violating libertarian principles or not? And if grants are unacceptable then are there any other acceptable forms of assistance such as federal loans and work study?
Another issue on my mind is that do I really need a bachelor’s? (I have an AA, my major is computer science) It seems lectures and classes are not necessary since I can get reading lists from class websites and study on my own. Do I really need to go to university when there are libraries and the internet? Also tuition is way overpriced and it rises every year at like twice the rate of inflation and maybe I shouldn’t risk having long term debt. Lastly maybe some employers won’t even consider me if I don’t have a 4 year degree but there are many other opportunities if I can prove my skills, right?
Much of this info in self education and government interference in education I got from gary north’s articles at lewrockwell.com.

Socialism is evil
You will be better off if you don't accept FASFA. I personally won't take it.
Did you go to a public school?
Do you accept student loans?
Do you use public highways and roads?
Do you use the postal service?
Have you ever used a library?
While I respect your principled stand, I would suggest that the OP consider Ron Paul's position on earmarks and other topics: the money is already there, it's already slated to be spent, so we might as well spend it on something worthwhile.
If the money doesn't go to student loans and Pell grants, it will probably go to universities to do studies on the effect of cow farts on the ozone layer or growing bananas in the Arctic or some other stupid projects.

PART OF THE SOLUTION
Hope you are going for political science, run for local, then state, and so on.
Ron Paul himself found that you can not change the system from the outside, but from within. FAFSA is part of that system. If you don’t use it our money will still be spent, they will not send it back to the taxpayer.
Use it and use it well. Good luck.
Consider Ron Paul's position on earmarks
and act accordingly.

Don't forget he takes the money
Because it's going to get spent one way or the other.

A line that's often repeated
A line that's often repeated by believers in the free-market: "Just because a slave accepts a meal from his master, does not mean he accepts his slavery".
The people who think you're a hypocrite for taking the grant money probably don't agree with libertarian or free-market views anyway- so no big deal.
Absolutely you should use FAFSA
Even if you don't get a penny of Federal Aid, many private scholarships require that you have submitted it.
Your congressman and senators and usually state reps and sometimes even County all have scholarship funds that rarely get taken in full.
Oh and if that all fails, you can buy a 40lb tank of nitrous oxide for under $60 and the frat boys will pay you $1000 for it. (I "worked" my way through school sometimes).

I used FAFSA
because my dad told me the money he had been taxed would come back to the family in that way.
But I will say, as convenient as that is, if I had known then (7 years ago) what I know now, I probably would have just takenloans.
BUMP
I still would like to have an opinion from liberty minded individuals and this is the best site for that I think.
