A simple generator.

Here's an idea... instead of dropping a few hundred (or more) on a generator, instead get yourself a power inverter that can be hooked to your car or truck. In a pinch, you can set it up and run an extension into your home and power your lights or furnace (better idea) and all you have to do is keep your vehicle idling in the driveway.
My van has a 30 gallon fuel tank.. a whole lot bigger than any generator I've seen. I could run it all night if needed without fearing an empty tank in the morning.
Just a thought since it's snowing like a banshee up here in northern NJ and I hope I won't have to do it myself today....

Electrical Lesson of the Day-boys and girls...

*REMEMBER* - VOLTS X AMPS = WATTS

your car is 12volt system with probably a 70 amp alternator in it...

that is 12volts X 70 amps = 840 watts of power

your furnace runs on a 15 amp x 110volt circuit, which = 1650 watts
your furnace will only use that much power at start up...it will not pull that much after it is running at speed...so a 2200watt power inverter will run it easily.

here is the trick. what will become the problem is when your refrigerator compressor and the furnace START at the same time. for motors pull the most juice at startup. this is when the inverter (if it's like mine) will kick it's overload breaker and will have to be reset. at night i am only plugged into my furnace for heat. during the day i plug in what is needed. a frig or deep freeze only need to be cycled on about every 2 or 3 hours so you will not need to have them plugged in at all times. the battery in your car will handle the excessive load and then recharge the battery while your furnace is off. this has been the daily electrical lesson. now go out and have some fun.

Love the idea... clue a layman in.

Hello All,

Just happened across this post and would like to know what the consensus is with regards to powering the following items with a power inverter? Use it with an idling car or don't? Hook up 1/2/3 car batteries?

1) Freezer operates at 115V, 60Hz & 5amps
2) Refrigerator operates (???) - can't pull it away from the wall now
3) Flowbee: 800 max Watts of suction

I could deal without the Flowbee if absolutely necessary.

Thanks for the input.

the freezer and fridge...no problem...

for a 2000W / 4500w peak like mine...what is a "flowbee? i run an aircompressor off of mine...

You need oruval to consult on this.

Actually, if you are talking about hooking up the inverter to your auto's battery and electrical system, I doubt you could get much continuous wattage. After the first few minutes (as the battery drains), your maximum watts will be limited to the output of your alternator (regardless of the horsepower of your car). Check your car's manual. I'm sure it ain't no 2,000 watts.

ummm...

you do not need continuous power to run everything...

Watts = Amps * Volts {can also be written Power= current x voltage}
Amps = Watts / Volts
Volts = Watts / Amps
Watt-Hours = Volts * Amp-Hours {or energy = voltage x current x time}

http://www.overclock.net/faqs/42271-how-convert-between-watt...

if you are wanting to store power in batteries you need to figure out the amps per hour you need and over rate the batteries to your needs. one by amp hour ratings on the battery, and 2 hooking them up "inline"" for your power needs.

Tell me- how do you get 3 kW out of an 800W car alternator so that you can use one of those fancy inverters?

Vector Power Inverters are Great

about 7 years ago i bought one of these...

http://www.head-units.com/vector_power_inverter.htm

2200 watts continuous / 4500 watts peak, soft start technology, auto reset for over voltage, under voltage, overload or over temperature after problem is corrected, turbo cooling, noise free technology, direct connection terminal block for higher power loads, overload protection, dual 15-amp (panel mounted circuit breaker).
$379ea

i use it on job sites where there is no power and when the power goes out at home. i can run anything that is 110V off of it...works great hooked to my car as it idles all night. i've ran my deep freezer, fridge, lights and furnace with it all at the same time. i highly recommend then to anyone. i could even probably run my well pump off of it if i took the time to wire 2 -110 lines to make 220 but i've never taken the time.

Something for nothing

You'll never get more than 800 Watts out of an alternator whose output is not more than 800 Watts. Put all the inverters you want on it, no matter what the output of the inverter is, and you'll only get as much, but probably less, than the rated output of the inverter. PERIOD.

Yeah well but what's the

Yeah well but what's the bore and stroke in your van compared to a small generator? Sure you could do it in a pinch. I actually hooked up my Christmas lights to my battery bank threw an inverter. This allows me to not have to use my propane by using two electric ceramic heaters without stressing the circuit. But I'm charging electrically 110w threw a a converter.

Anyway, you're probably burning more fuel idling your vehicle than running a generator. Yo can also get tri-fuel generators and run Propane or Natural gas. Which burn cleaner and gives you some added versatility.

amps x volts.

equals watts. this works very well. it even applies to a/c power if the circuit is resistive. that means, no magnetism involved. motors, ballast's etc.
an inverter is not very practical. but it can be done. it would be wiser to buy a small generator for just the fridge and the furnace. [natural gas only] most furnaces are 115volt. this means you can just install a pigtail for the generator.
if anyone is really serious in doing this, I will crunch the numbers for you.
motors are "inductive"loads. they have high "inrush" currents when starting. do not try to start them under a load and it will work better. stage them in........

Caution for using idling car for electricity

No one has mentioned another possible problem with the idea of letting your car idle all night long for electricity. Many older car engines will overheat when idling long periods of time because their radiator water cooling systems have deteriorated and don't work well enough anymore. Overheating an engine can easily cause serious damage to the engine causing it to not run anymore and costing many hundreds of dollars to fix.

Therefore, anyone thinking of doing this should make sure the radiator is full of water before starting the engine and then giving it a good test to see if it will overheat. I would recommend that after starting it closely monitor the temperature gauge for the first hour to see if it is going to overheat and then keep an eye on it every five or ten minutes for the next couple hours. If you notice that the temperature gauge stablizes (stops getting hotter) then it is probably capable of running all night. I say "probably" because something unexpected could happen that could cause it to overheat.

Most cars nowadays don't have gauges and only have "idiot lights" (a red light that come on when it overheats) and so if this is the case then it should be given a longer test before deciding to use it overnight.

I would definitely use this idea only if your circumstances are pretty rough and no other solution is available and then only as a temporary solution.

Good points

I can't say for sure how many cars only have idiot lights, but that doesn't sound right. Also, don't use water, use anti-freeze. If your car is in good condition mechanically, then checking coolant and coming back once in a while to check the temp should put your mind at ease. Idling really doesn't create much heat unless there is a problem with your cooling system or your idle speed is set too high. Of course if you have an old VW like mine you don't worry about any of this stuff... ;-)

I agree...

...that if you need to add fluid to your radiator that it would be best to use anti-freeze since it will make the engine run cooler.

Small generators can be pretty inexpensive.

I want one of those super-quiet Honda 1,000-Watt ones that weigh just 26 lbs. Those aren't the low-cost ones though. I opted for its larger cousin with a 3,000-Watt output, which is also a chunk of change and a *lot* heavier but low in decibels.

I bought a 3,000-Watt inverter suitable for a large bank of deep-cell batteries. It cost more than some small generators. I have it hooked to just two batteries now but plan to add six more. I used it to run a counter-top microwave oven, a floor lamp, and a cell-phone charger during the power outage from the recent New England ice storm. I used a 6-amp auto battery recharger to charge the batteries back up when the power returned but plan to get some good-sized photovoltaic panels to keep them charged in the future. (My present 30-Watt folding military solar panel is hardly worth hooking up to a large battery bank. That's for recharging LED flashlight and cell phone batteries in the field.)

You can get generator attachments for farm tractors. Just about every real farmer has one. They are great for delivering on-site power wherever needed. Autos on blocks have also been rigged to power good-sized generators via belts attached to their drive wheels. Pedal-powered generators are also available online, though I have plans to fashion one from an old bicycle I picked up for $10.

This site has the best deals I have found online:
http://www.theinverterstore.com/index.php

They have lots of info in their FAQ on modified sine wave vs. pure sine wave (the former is good enough for decent performance from most items, the latter is necessary for sensitive equipment or optimum performance with some equipment).

Anything that creates heat from electricity is going to require lots of wattage. If your vehicle has at least a 50 amp charging system you should be fine powering a 1000 watt convertor at idle. If your car has a big engine and lots of electronic goodies, it probably has suitably large alternator. You will burn a lot gas idling however. I have a VW bus which sips gas when it's idling, and I've installed a 75 amp alternator in place of the stock 30 amp generator. I also have installed two marine duty batteries for camping, so I'm set in this regard.

As others have mentioned, don't use the cigarette lighter (wire it straight to your battery with an inline fuse), and make sure to use a good heavy duty extension cord!

Saved us a few years ago in a 9 day power outage in WA

Have an 800w inverter that clips to the car battery posts. Ran the refrigerator/freezer 1 hour in the am and 1 hour in the pm with no spoilage of food. Got mine at West Marine or Boater's World, but auto supply stores should carry them.

Now that's cool.

how much was that?

Good Idea.

Harbor freight has inverters pretty cheap. I have been thinking about getting one. Was wondering if anyone had tried them? But you can buy them also at Auto parts stores and wal-mart in the auto section.
