CNBC to consumers: spend or ruin the economy

There's no shortage of bad news when it comes to the economy - the recession, fears of deflation and elevated jobless claims are just some of the things that people are talking about. The widespread sentiment of doom and gloom has put a damper on the holiday season. But is slowed consumer spending a result of hard economics or is the psychology of hard times holding consumers back?

In a recent study released by the Pew Research Center, it was reported that 73% of Americans say they plan to cut back on their holiday shopping this year. Nearly six-in-10 of those who said they're cutting back report they're doing so because they worry things might get worse; only 28% said they are cutting back because their financial situation has deteriorated.

Sure, we all need to save more and spend less, but extreme tightening might be the worst thing that consumers can do in tough times, as stopping normal spending will only put more pressure on the weak economy.

In order to fight the fear factor, consumers should not fight the urge to splurge -- within reason of course. In fact, they should take advantage of falling gas prices to get out and about, take advantage of deep discounts in the stores and online for gift giving, and remember that giving this holiday season will lift spirits more than ever before.

I guess the $8,000 of unsecured debt the average American has isn't enough splurging for her.

Spend Money

Don't forget you SHOULD spend your dollars on practical things before they lose value. Although obviously the article wasn't about that.
e.g. :
Storable foods
Tools
Weapons
Martial arts training
medical, engineering, repair, agricultural training

Agreed, but that's not the

Agreed, but that's not the intent of the article. It says "consumers should not fight the urge to splurge."

Can we get a collective rolling of the eyes?

Well, I just spent quite a bit at newegg.com... a few thousand. I suppose it's good for the short-term, but in the long term that money spent is going to save me a few hundred every month. Was that good or bad? In 10-15 months I'll break even on the expense, possibly sooner, and after that it will just be extra money in the bank with all that I'll be saving.

Bleh... I probably just ruined the economy.

In Australia, checks were sent out and the PM got on TV

and told the people not to "hoard" (save) them but to go out and spend.

Only people already on some form of government "aid" got the checks. One lady, featured in the newspaper, got $6,000 from the government because she was poor and had four kids.

They bought electronic goods and toys. Yippee!

$6,000 simply for being poor

$6,000 simply for being poor and having 4 kids? Nice. People should remember that next time they go to the ballot box. This sort of thing is not compassion. What about the people who have spent years working and saving so that they could start a family and be responsible about it? What about them?

one way or another it will

one way or another it will be blamed on US.

That's exactly

what they want us to believe!

One way or another this will be turned around on us and we horrible Americans will be to blame.

I reckon they have a worldwide script

they have to read .. almost like the speech former Australian PM Howard and the Canadian Premier gave after 9/11 (which was exactly the same speech, word for word).

Summarised it says: spend up or YOU are to blame for the economy going down the drain.

In Australia, they have paid out the stimulus package and every media outlet is encouraging the recipients to live it up, to spend to keep the economy going, or else... implying that it will be the consumers's doing that we go into recession.

Going by USA, with the stimulus package paid out earlier this year, and a 2nd one on the way... my guess is that we are in recession too but nobody is to know until the figures are so bad that they can't hide it any longer from us. Btw: talks about a second stimulus package are for payment around June, 2009. I guess that is if there is still an economy left and any money in the kitty.

I tried

Speaking of Wal Mart

Some statistics on Wal Mart I just read from rense.com
How Big is Wal-Mart
1. At Wal-Mart Americans spend $36,000,000. every hour of every day
2. This year there will be 7.2 billion purchases.
The article ends by saying "have Wal Mart bailout Wall Street and let Wal Mart sell GM cars"

The debt yoke is heavy
