Almost six in 10 soldiers drink so much they could be considered alcoholics, according to a Ministry of Defence report.

The document analysing the drinking and drug-taking habits of Army recruits found that 58 per cent were "considered possibly dependent on alcohol" and drinking at levels considered a health hazard.

Soldiers blame the drinking culture on the Army, which they say encourages regular binges and drinking to excess.

The report found that more than six in 10 soldiers had six or more drinks in any one session, with one in five admitting they were unable to stop drinking once they started.

A third of those interviewed also admitted that they had injured themselves or someone else as a result of drinking in the last year.

Around 6 per cent of the civilian population drink at levels which indicate dependency - but this report concludes that the Army figure was 10 times higher.

The report also found that excessive drinking was a factor in drug-taking, with many admitted they probably would not have taken drugs had they not been drunk.

The study, conducted in November last year, interviewed more than 100 soldiers at three locations - Redford Barracks in Edinburgh, Longmoor Camp in Hampshire and Larkhill Camp in Wiltshire.

One soldier, quoted anonymously, said: "I didn't really think I'd change at all in drinking, because I didn't like the taste of alcohol really. But then I joined Army life and they take you out on the piss and I got my first taste for Jack Daniel's. And then I was spending near enough most of my wages because I was going out two nights a week drinking."

The report concludes that the Army needed to conduct an "immediate investigation into the medical and disciplinary context within which alcohol issues are treated in the Army".

The Ministry of Defence has said it had now put in place support programmes, particularly for when soldiers are known to drink the most, after tours of duty.

A spokesman said: "All three services run robust programmes designed to raise awareness and promote the message of sensible drinking. The sale of alcohol and individual consumption limits are strictly regulated, particularly when personnel are serving operationally."

He added: "Individuals identified as being at risk receive counselling and welfare support including attendance on preventative early intervention programmes."

My first husband is a VietNam vet

I married right out of high school and 2 months later my husband was drafted to the Army, went to VietNam for 13 months, before he was drafted he was a good man, did not drink, did not do drugs, good husband, etc. When he came home from VietNam he was drinking daily, we stayed together for 8 years and his drinking and the mental problems he suffered from seeing the horror of VietNam destroyed who he was as a person. I am still in contact with him after over 30 years and he still is drinking, married for the 5th time, doing drugs and having nightmares. The military has not helped him other than to give him more and more pills. He shared with me pics and things he had to do in VietNam and the things he saw. These guys are exposed to alot of horror during these wars.... things that go against all they believe in and the help they need is not there for them when they come home and have to deal with it.

I feel for those guys...

I feel for those guys... they signed up to defend our liberty but became the arm of tyranny in foreign lands. I would need something to dilute the anger and shame as well.

Everyone knows soldiers, saliors, airmen, and marines drink haha....its been that way since forever. It's part of the culture, good or bad...it's the way it is. The "alocholics" I served with were some of the best damn people I've ever met.

But hell that is usually only in garrison, in combat environment alcohol is pretty much banned....

And if I do recall,it was Ron Paul who got all of the money from the service members during the primaries. so let em drink...ha

Marine Drinking Stories

The year, 1962 just before Bravo 105 MM Artillery Battery, 11th Marines was flown into Cuba for the Cuban Missile Crisis.

For those not familiar with the Marine Corps barracks life, there are approximately 100 men, divided into three platoons in different squad bays. I was in headquarters platoon with some heavy drinkers. After working hours a corporal is put in charge of the barracks, known as the, Duty NCO. At that time the drinkers pooled their money and made a booze run to town and returned and set up bar in the middle of the squad bay and no one got any sleep all night. One night the whole squad bay went up for grabs, pillow fights, feathers all over like it was snowing, broken windows, broken jaws and the Duty NCO called the Provost Marshall and the MP's had to restore oder.

Another time when I was with Lima Battery (1961), we had a battery "Beer Bust" (Marine Corps picnic). This outfit had the craziest characters in the world and before the picnic was over all the white "T" shirts we wore (no jacket) were covered in each others blood. Front teeth being knocked out and heads busted.

I would rather go into combat any day with a bucket of blood drunken Marines rather than some goody two-shoes tea totallers that joined to go to college.

no more war!!!

We need to end these wars and bring

our soldiers home....isn't that the root of the problem?

Isn't "end the war" dragging our knuckles across the faces of the scum (the men in power) who started the damn wars in the first place?

Go tell it to the Marines !

Marines are not allowed to drink in Iraq and Afghanistan . If caught, they face nonjudicial punishment and the possible loss of rank and pay.

Despite the stiff consequences, Marines still smuggle in alcohol and find ways to tie one on.

How history’s most decorated Marine would handle the issues of today ?

Here’s what Chesty would do. “Get rid of the ice cream and candy, “Give ’em beer and whiskey — that’ll help some. Get some pride in them. Tell them they’re men.” said then-Brig. Gen. Chesty Puller

Chesty helped established several enlisted clubs, and even added lunchtime beers in some places. He was also known for handing out his personal stash of hooch to Marines in the field.

At Koto-Ri, in Korea’s Chosin Reservoir, Chesty went up to the line to check on his troops and stopped in to see a former buddy from Guadalcanal in one of the fighting holes. In the privacy of the snow bank, then-Col. Chesty Puller produced a miracle — a drink of Old Grand-Dad bourbon, according to the biography “Marine: The Life of Chesty Puller.”

“It was like something out of heaven, you can’t know what that did for a freezing man who’d be up there for six hours without relief,” the sergeant recalled later. “I never saw the old man drink, but he knew when a little nip would save a fellow from going mad or becoming a casualty.”

When Chesty's 1st Marine Division was cut off behind enemy lines in Korea and the Army had written the 1st Marine Division off as being lost because they were surrounded by 22 enemy divisions. Chesty's Marines made it out inflicting the highest casualty ratio on an enemy in history and destroying 7 entire enemy divisions in the process. An enemy division is 16500+ men while a Marine division is 12500 men.

"Take me to the Brig. I want to see the "real Marines". "Major General Chesty Puller, USMC - while on a Battalion inspection.

Here’s to the drunken Marine, with beer in his canteen!

Yes and

what about the suicides. This is NOT a put down of the soldiers it is our standing WITH the soldiers. There is a problem and it needs to be acknowledged. Peace
