I was thinking as I discussed pissing money away with a friend recently that I really do play things pretty close to the chest. I thought of how much money I actually waste, and on what.
Here's what I realized.

...I've not spent one penny in K-Mart.
...I haven't spent a cent in WalMart.
...I have not set foot in a Burger King.
...I've not consumed anything from McDonald's.
...I've stayed out of Taco Bell.
...I haven't given a dime to Wendy's.
...I spent all of $6.00 at a Chili's (during a freak snowstorm)
...In general, I haven't supported any fast-food chain at all.
...Neither have I spent any money at any of the 'stuff-mart' stores.
...I did spend a bit at Dunkin Donuts but have since amended my ways. I no longer frequent DD for my morning coffee, depending instead for several local, independent bagel/coffee establishments for my daily grind.
I try to steer clear of Home Depot, Sears Hardware and Lowes, giving my business to the local, small hardware stores (fewer and fewer), true lumberyards or the local Ace hardware.
My vice that remain are subscriber TV (Verizon after promising to Comcast I would eventually leave them due to their being an advertiser in support of the RP-excluding republican debate. Sent them a letter and followed thru on getting rid of them.
Local restaurants and eating establishments. I realized most of my Christmas shopping (what there was of it) has been very local aside from a trip to Toys R Us for my son's bike. I realize now I should have gone instead to the local bike shop, regardless of the 'money off' coupons we had for T'R'U.
Aside from my monthly mortgage payment, I have no real outstanding debt. My credit card bills are paid off at the end of each month. I use credit cards strictly as a 'cash replacement'. I don't carry that much cash - the card makes it easier to track purchases for business.
So, in all, I guess I'm really not pissing away a whole lot of money... the same can't be said of my friend!
How about you?

I'm not as religious as you about it.

I have D&D maybe a half-dozen times a year, same with BK and McD combined. I don't light up (or chew), buy fewer than a dozen containers of wine and beer combined per year, go to a movie theater less than once a year, haven't rented a video in several years, have never bought or rented a video game, buy fewer than 6 books a year, reuse plastic spoons and forks till they break, don't subscribe to a single newspaper or magazine, will never pay money for a tattoo or piercing, and don't give money to my church (what church?)

BUT, I am a fan of Home Depot and Walmart and feel no compunction whatsoever about rewarding these stores for creating jobs for Chinese workers so they can make more money than they would otherwise make yet providing savings to me.

good job

been doing that for years. this christmas, being budget minded, i was stuck on what to get my wife. a new kitchen sink wouldn't quite cut the romantic angle, and a new water generation unit wouldn't either, so i decided to get her a gold necklace. at least it will be worth its weight in what i paid for it, and more.

we got the kids some cool scientific gifts, clothes, and functional craft projects.

we have kept it simple and small and it has been wonderful.

Good for you!

Excellent savings!

We've boycotted LL Bean for almost a year now since they sponsored the debate that excluded Ron Paul in NH.

My personal boycotts of

FOX GNAWS
MCDonalds
Wal-Mart
Cigarettes

are continuing into their second year! Hooray. Couldn't have done it without my fiance.

exactly, that's because

every purchase you make is a vote for that store.

more, so. everything that you do is a vote.

oops. double post

.

Let's say you are doing much better

than me. It's really hard changing the habits.

I avoided the big box...

hardware stores that want you to do all the work yourself including checking yourself out and instead went to the local True Value. I was greeted genuinely, quickly found what I wanted at a very reasonable price and was out of the door in mere minutes.

I am done with the big box retailers, they do not even offer real value.

Good job

We are being very careful. My husband was raised poor so he is a lot better than me but I'm learning. Peace
