Grandfather Economic Report: Who Says Inflation is Dead?

The following information comes from this great page of The Grandfather Economic Report. It is one of those pages that looks like its has been around since the web first went up! No snazzy design, but solid information. These are the kinds of pages I learned so much from when I first started surfing the web back in 1996!

Without further ado:

A dollar in 1950 will buy only 12 cents worth of goods today, 88% less than before. Inflation in my adult years increased average prices 1,000% or more:

  • example 1: a postage stamp in the 1950s cost 3 cents; today's cost is 41 cents - 1,266% inflation;
  • example 2: a gallon of 90 Octane full-service gasoline cost 18 cents before; today it is $3.05 for self-service - 1,870 % inflation;
  • example 3: a house in 1959 cost $14,100; today's median price is $213,000 - 1,400% inflation;
  • example 4: a dental crown used to cost $40; today it's $1,100 - 2,750% inflation;
  • example 5: an ice cream cone in 1950 cost 5 cents; today its $2.50 - 4,900% inflation;
  • example 6: monthly government Medicare insurance premiums paid by seniors was $5.30 in 1970; its now $93.50 - 1,664% inflation; (and up 70% past 5 years)

example: several generations ago a person worked 1.4 months per year to pay for government; he now works 5 months.

And in the past, one wage-earner families lived well and built savings with minimal debt, many paying off their home and college-educating children without loans. How about today?

Few citizens know that a few years ago government changed how they measure and report inflation, as if that would stop it - - but families know better when they pay their bills for food, medical costs, energy, property taxes, insurance and try to buy a house.

Is inflation a threat to society? Consider this famous quote:

"There is no subtler, no surer means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose." Lord John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946), renowned British economist.

The inflation is worse because it's stuff you can't help but buy

After paying our fixed bills, we need to buy food and gas and pay off our percentage of the birth of our daughter after insurance. The birth center charged us more than twice what they did 2 years ago and we weren't expecting that. (Out of hospital birth is becoming less safe in this state because the midwives are being intimidated by police raids, BTW.)

If we had $20 extra a week, we could fill our house with stuff from the dollar store, but, if we're coming up just a little short, the only things left to cut back on are food and gas. These things are the hardest hit by inflation and I don't know how much less of them we can buy. The babies are in cloth diapers. MIL bought our groceries this week. We're burning wood for heat. The next thing we'll have to cut is high speed internet (which is actually a minor expense compared to silly luxuries like food)!

We're living in a neighborhood where all the original homeowners were factory workers and we're both engineers and struggling this much.

Defend Liberty!

Great Article on this topic and we are in hyperinflation

This is a great article, written back in 2004 - go figure this guy was dead-on 4 years ago, when we thought our economy was great!

Liberty under attack

The FBI has raided the liberty dollar.
It must be a nightmare having the feds invade your home or office. Especially when one is trying to promote libery. I can only imagine.

and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists

Then they came for the trade unionists

Then they came for me
and there was no one left

Can we save America? Hard to say. Sometimes I wonder if America deserves being free.

Go Ron Paul!

none are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.

good tool

This is good information to share with potential Ron Paul supporters.
Prices should have dropped due to the fact that, essentially, products have not changed over the years and technology has made us way more proficient at producing them.
America's demise has been planned and implemented by a few people.
We have been kept in check by the illusion of fear.
So Sad.
Listen to them beg for their chains.

Go Ron Paul!

none are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.

The Secret Back Door

Plan B.2 - Draft the Good Doctor

Would you like to guarantee Dr. Ron Paul appears on the 2008 Presidential ballot?

But why do we need a guarantee? The establishment wouldn’t try to cheat the Good Doctor, Heavens no. He will win the Republican nomination fair and square.

When the establishment refused to allow Dr. Paul to participate in the Iowa forum,
locked his supporters out of the Texas straw poll,
changed the rules for primary voting in New Hampshire,
Delaware, Connecticut, Maryland, West Virginia,
and tried to exclude him from the Michigan Debates …
those were just flukes, errors, aberrations … right?
And FOX is “Fair and Balanced.”

There is a way to insure Our Chance to Restore the Republic.

Open the backdoor. Become a delegate to the Libertarian Party Convention.
Go online and Join the Libertarian Party [www.lp.org] before December 31st, 2007. A basic Sustaining Membership http://www.lp.org/organization/bylaws.shtml (Article 5) costs only $25 dollars.
The LP Convention will be held May 22-28 at the Adams Mark Hotel - Denver, Colorado.

Am I suggesting that you change your Republican Party affiliation?
Absolutely not!
I am saying we should play the political game and hedge our bets for Dr. Paul.
The Libertarian Party already has ballot status on nearly every state in the nation.

If you are an Independent join at http://www.lp.org/members/newmember.shtml
If you are a Republican join at http://www.lp.org/members/newmember.shtml
If you are a Democrat join at http://www.lp.org/members/newmember.shtml
If you are a Libertarian (75%+ of you already support Dr. Paul) then for crying out loud renew your membership at http://www.lp.org/members/newmember.shtml

If you are an Independent, Republican, or Democrat and you are hesitant to join the Libertarian Party then
support Dr. Paul today by hedging the bet for 2008 and don’t renew in 2009.
This is about doing the
Big Thing the Right Thing - Right NOW!

We the People have shown we will come out in force for the Good Doctor
and the Secret Plan is very simple. (It’s cleverly hidden below.)

The “Secret Plan:”

1) Swarm the LP convention,
2) Make one by-law change like so,
ARTICLE 12: PRESIDENTIAL AND VICE-PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS
2. No candidate may be nominated for President or Vice-President who is ineligible under the United States Constitution, {{edit this -- who has not expressed a willingness to accept the nomination of the Party, }}or who is not a member of the Party.

3) Nominate or “Draft” Dr. Paul,

4) “Officially” announce Ron Paul’s nomination AFTER the Republican National Convention.

Rationale:

American politics has become an empty theater devoted only to concentrating power for an anointed few. The evidence of that are the constant attacks on Dr. Paul’s campaign. The fact that Dr. Paul dominates straw polls nationwide yet is maligned by the establishment and in the media is almost a footnote.

If we the people retain the mechanism to nominate Dr. Paul then the establishment loses its control over the process. They cannot simply dismiss Dr. Paul without running the risk of having their candidate hijacked.

Imagine … the people controlling the process. That’s pretty democratic.
Imagine … restoring the republic. That’s pretty republican.
Imagine … following the Constitution. That’s pretty libertarian.

Everybody wins!

Either way it's good for the Constitution, good for America, good for Dr. Paul, and good for us because we the people would finally have a man we can all vote for and know we are doing the right thing. We simply have to beat the establishment at its own game.

Besides, Dr. Paul might actually appear twice on ballots.

Worse things could happen.

currency devaluation

tho the 88% devaluation is accurate, it is not accurate to state: -

A dollar in 1950 will buy only 12 cents worth of goods today. (or [1950] $1 = [2007] $0.12.)

the statement as listed is backwards and indicates an INCREASE in buying power rather than the actual decrease.

what would be accurate to say is that it takes $1 in 2007 to buy what 12 cents would in 1950. or $1 would have bought in 1950 what it takes $8.56 in 2007. or [1950]$0.12 = [2007] $1.

keynes has been discredited in many quarters of economic thought, but unfortunately not in those - government & the fed - which impacts the economy most strongly and directly. they still believe in his concepts of deficit spending and increased money supply. though in his defense, while defending the indefensible, he suggested those two actions only during recessionary times and recommended surpluses and stable money in growth times. the federales have ignored the second part of the program.

Money Masters on Google Video

This 1996 documentary is very informative and worth the 3.5 hr run time.

The only response the big gov social capitolists (as Anthony Sutton labelled them) can give is discredibility.

The internationalists simply attack Jerome Corsi, Edward Griffin, Anthony Sutton, Ron Paul, Paul Roberts and say that they are not credible, which is a lie...fact is fact is fact is fact. Even though Corsi will quote Zbigniew Brzezinski or Carroll Quigley and blast the so called anglo American establishment! Corsi, according to talk show hosts like Mark Davis, is simply "not credible". And this opinion is derived for status quo maintenance, nothing more. Facts are facts.

They will also say that all specie backed money systems have all previously failed as well, which is quite a lie. They will also defend the federal reserve money-out-of thin air like their life depends on it...their way of life certainly depends on unlimited money printing.

Ron is absolutely right about sound money, and thank God sound money is about to be the hottest political topic of the day...despite the talk radio screeners efforts, the sound money issue will not blow away. It's here to stay till gold or silver competes. Bring it on!

Liberty dollar raid

Does anyone else find the liberty dollar raids suspicious in their timing? They've been selling their overpriced silver and gold (and copper) rounds and gift certificates backed by silver and gold coin for nearly a decade now, so why now?

I am not a fan of the liberty dollar, I never really trusted it and well lets face it, their rounds were overpriced. If I need to make a purchase with silver, far cheaper sources can be found, including the coins from the US mint. Anyway there is something suspicious about the timing of the raid. Why wait 9 years... why wait a year after the mint decided they might be illegal.... why now?

Maybe it is an attempt by the bushites to create a situation to make Dr. Paul's views look bad. If that is so, I feel it will explode in their face. IMO All but the dumbest of the dumb will side with people accepting what ever they wish to accept for goods and services.

Meanwhile, did anyone else catch this? http://www.liberty-watch.com/volume03/issue08/coverstory.php
Gold and silver US Mint coin payroll at face value. :) It is such beauty.

US Mint gold coin at face value

That's a beauty. A US Mint Gold coin is legal tender and has a face value, however, the IRS rules that it's tax value must be determined by its market price in terms of Federal Reserve Notes.

Logically, that means if the coin's value increases over time with respect to FRNs, you must pay tax on the increase in the market value of your coins regardless of the fact that their face value has not changed. On the other hand, if the value of your FRNs decrease over time, you cannot take a deduction for that.

Just great. The IRS has decided that sound money is basically illegal.

Give me liberty or a candidate who will.

I second Money Masters (just google it)

When it first came on, I thought (three and a half hours!). But I didn't notice the time go by and at the end I wanted more.

Funny how truth is addictive. That may be why we are best called Paulohaulics! I can't get enough of the truth!

Income

While I know this doesn't refute the argument of inflation by any means, I am curious what the median gross and net income increase is since those time periods.

Also, what is the cause-effect relationship of minimum wage increases and inflation?

Grandfather Economic Report

Some great reading and info for backing up your letters to editors, conversations with friends, family and co-workers here. Worth spending some time on the website.

ugh... keynes

Keynes happened to get it right in the quote, but in every thing I've read he's not so much renowned as he is reviled. Keynesian economics is generally accepted to have been discredited in the 70's. According to his models the inflationary recession that happened then should have been impossible. Rothbard argues his ideas only became popular at the time because they legitimized inflation and government largess.

I must testify for Dave Ramsey

When I read this "in the past, one wage-earner families lived well and built savings with minimal debt, many paying off their home and college-educating children without loans.", I knew I had to mention Dave Ramsey.

Some of you already know about Dave. He is the host of a syndicated personal finance talk show, The Dave Ramsey show (at least Fox got this right). While the majority of finance media folk preach manipulation of credit, Dave 'preaches' saving money and living debt-free (including car and house loans) to achieve real wealth. Thanks to Dave, more and more people are buying cars and houses WITHOUT LOANS.

I truly believe that being wealthy (not rich, mind you, but wealthy) is a patriotic duty of every American citizen. For to be wealthy, one must become wise...and being wise leads to wise choices in health, family, and politics. Politicians and the media cannot fool wise people as they have been fooling Americans for the past generation.

Ron Paul merely adheres to the original (wise) American values...and it blew everyone's mind! Ramsey's principles are rooted in old simple wisdom too. You build wealth in simple stages. PLEASE go to his website http://www.daveramsey.com or check out one of his books from a library. It will change your life as much as Ron Paul.

Ron Paul cures your political apathy.
Dave Ramsey cures your wealth apathy.

==============================

Ron Paul is the great uniter, the income tax fighter...the military-supported, defender of the border...the political apathy solution and the champion of the Constitution! And Doctor Paul makes White House calls!

Thanks for Both!

Dave Ramsey and Ron Paul have both had a positive influence on my life. The “eureka” effect created by listening to their “common sense truth”, was similar in both instances when I heard each of them speak for the first time. I was listening to Dave long before discovering Dr. Paul, however ever since then, I find myself wondering “Why doesn’t Dave support Ron Paul?”. One day I heard Dave state that he doesn’t delve into politics too much, but a few years ago in Tennessee, the governor said the State was facing a deficit and State income taxes would need to be imposed. This prompted Dave and others to wage a “grassroots” movement against this possibility. A new, business minded, governor was elected even though he made no promises. According to Dave, the State went from needing to levy taxes on all residents - to a budget surplus in a matter of months. As anyone who follows Dave knows: Tennessee had a spending problem, not an income problem. Dave went on to discuss facts and views that were so consistent with Ron Paul’s, that I was on the edge of my seat waiting for him to mention Ron Paul’s name. Alas he didn’t!

I truly believe that an endorsement by Dave Ramsey would be the greatest “Big Name\ Celebrity” endorsement available to Ron Paul.

This Thanksgiving, they are at the top of my “thankful” list.

"If the message is Liberty, promote it shamelessly!"

I have a feeling celebs are going to start backing Paul soon

Right now, celebs and their controlling PR managers don't want to look stupid. But I'm betting when Ron Paul runs for president, many celebs will step forward for Ron Paul...even if their PR managers don't want them to.

This is big folks. Ron Paul's message has focused people's patriotic duty. Just as when actors used to feel it necessary to go to wars, many celebs feel it necessary to fight this fight...support Ron Paul. And celebrities are very often looking for a good cause to back...and they want to be taken seriously as a person (not just an entertainer). Ron Paul provides both.

Hmmm, maybe some need a nudge. Let's ask them. Contact your favorite celebs and politely ask them to support Ron Paul.

I'd sure like to see some big names come on board

and you're right, I think some will. You know Huckabee is going to get a lot of milage out of Chuck Norris. He has already done a commercial for him. You'ld think celebs would be lining up to support a man that would phase out their income tax.......maybe the reality hasn't sunk in yet. I don't think the Ron Paul campaign actively goes after these endorsements. Heck, they weren't even aware of the Nov.5th fundraiser until it was set. The strength of Ron's character will draw some big cats in..........unless the Clinton's dazzle them with Hollywood extravaganzas, which they probably will once she's the dems ticket holder.

I was so fortunate.

When I was 12 I was in my parents attic and found a book titled, "The Richest Man in Babylon." If you have young children this book will be the best gift you can give to them. With the simple philosophy of this book I have never had a car loan, paid my own way through college with no debt, and have amassed a sizable fortune by the age of 26. I am telling you all GET THIS BOOK FOR YOUR KIDS. They will love it, and you will thank me.
