*War Vet Age 50 Stunned By New Deployment*

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- A veteran who has been out of the military for 15 years and recently received his AARP card was stunned when he received notice he will be deployed to Iraq.

The last time Paul Bandel, 50, saw combat was in the early 1990s during the Gulf War.
"(I was) kind of shocked, not understanding what I was getting into," said Bandel, who lives in the Nashville, Tenn., area.
In 1993, Bandel took the option of leaving the Army without retirement and never thought he would be called back to action.
"Here he's 50 years old, getting his AARP card, and here he's being redeployed with all these 18-year-olds," said Paul's wife, Linda Bandel.
"I can understand, say, 'Here, we have this assignment for you stateside. Go do your training,'" said Paul Bandel. "But, 'Hey, here's a gun, go back to the desert.'"
Involuntary recall allows the military, regardless of age or how long someone has been out of service, to order vets back into active duty.
"Anger's not the word. I was more concerned about the financial impact it's going to do. My pay's probably cut in half," said Paul Bandel.
"Right now, I'm just in disbelief because it's like the disbelief that this could be happening 15 years after being out of the military. It's like a dream or a nightmare," said Linda Bandel.
The veteran is dusting off his old uniforms and torn between his duty to his country and obligations as a grandfather.
"I certainly never thought I'd be going back there at this point in my life," said Paul Bandel.
The last missile system the veteran was trained to operate is no longer used by the military.
Calls to the Army and the Pentagon about how many men and women in their 50s are being called back to duty were not returned Wednesday.
Paul Bandel will be deployed overseas until 2010. His wife plans to move in with her elderly parents until his return.

I am starting to wonder if

I am starting to wonder if the bad things that biden told everyone was going to happen on Janruary 21st has anything to do with Isreal and hamas... maybe the war widens and this is why they are calling up 50 yearolds!

"When governments fear the people there is liberty. When the people fear the government there is tyranny."

I am more concerned about the return of my money than the return on my money. --Mark Twain

ignorant comments abound

1. The man is a CW2, which means Chief Warrant Officer 2, which also means he is treated as a commisioned officer, not an enlisted Soldier.

2. When a commisioned officer "gets out", he either
- retires, if qualified, or
- changes duty status to Individual Ready Reserve, which this douchebag apprently did without knowing what it means, or
- RESIGNS HIS COMMISION, which this douchebag failed to do, and now cries about not understanding the consequences of his actions.

I am using "his" in the generic sense, so no offense intended, ladies. You can wear combat boots if you want to. Then cry when you get deployed and think there's an exception for you because you have a child at home (just get out).

3. As for people with the typical military bashing BS, lets be clear:
(check out the FEC contributions from the military if you don't know that)

4. Steve Martin once had a skit where he mocked people who criticize things they don't about......Maybe he met some of these posters in the 70s.......

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you who are waiting and wondering whether you or a loved one may be called up to serve.

If that unfortunately does happen, though it may be only small comfort, please know that many people will be working here in the States in order to end this unjustified war and bring you home quickly.

My husband is a retired AFreserves officer

and they can call him back until he is 64. It's in his paperwork. If they call him to active duty, though, they have to begin paying him his retirement benefits immediately, and not in the future when he turns 60. He said they won't be calling him.

I thought so...He's a Lt Colonel. I thought they were IRR for

Look at the BDU's, it shows his rank.

this is exactly why you don't sign for mail you didn't expect

as far as the world is concerned i live at a UPS store. there is nothing tying me to my residence. i did this when i got out of the army 2 1/2 years ago. if something shows up that requires a signature i examine it first. if i don't know what it is i don't sign for it. if you don't sign they can't prove you received it.

No matter who you vote for, the government always gets in - Bill Hicks

There is fine print on

an enlistee's induction paperwork and discharge papers that allow for this. Veteran Bandel should have read every word before he signed. This is perfectly allowable by law. The contracts are not all the same, so one man's contract can't be compared to another's.

The last time this sort of thing started happening was just before Gulf War 2. I don't know if this has been happening steadily all along, or of this is another wave of recalls that signify another biggie coming down the pike.

They better not call me back

Then what happens?

Do you get a dishonorable discharge and that is it??

This is how this bastard administration...

...has avoided the draft.

As Dr. Paul said, there should NEVER be a draft because that indicates an unjust war.

Because in a just war, we would willingly fight to defend our country.

But the Bush administration knows well the consequences of a draft for this unjust war, so they have decided to recall and re-deploy these guys beyond the point of reason.

This is why Ron Paul received more money from active AND retired military than all the other idiot Republublican candidates combined.

This country blew its chance to have a real president. Maybe the best in our history.

But Ron Paul is MY president anyway.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

I have no sympathy here

The deafening silence of our military men and women in the face of the colossal failure of the military to defend this country on 9/11 and then punish that failure--a virtual impossibility unless directed otherwise--speaks volumes to me. The failure of this nation’s citizens to demand appropriate punishment for that failure speaks volumes to me. A nation full of people who parrot "Support the troops" in unconstitutional and illegal actions around the world and I should feel sorry now? I'm sorry, all right, but not for this man, not for his wife. I'd bet you couldn't have a reasonable conversation with either one about the possibility that the "war on terror" is a farce or about any of the other colossal assaults against the Constitution and liberty. There's a chance I could be wrong about that, but I doubt it. This nation and its people (military and civilian) now reap what we have sown and what we've permitted...and for that I feel indescribable sorrow.

They accuse us of not supporting the troops

if we want to bring the troops home. They think they support the troops by encouraging them to stay and fight in foreign countries. I think supporting the troops is making absolutely certain they are doing NO HARM and that they are DEFENDING the Constitution. We should not drop bombs to kill a man in a house. Supporting the troops is making certain they have what they need to get the job done right without collateral damage. Supporting the troops is not deploying them at home. Supporting the troops is using FEMA to carry the burden of national disasters, not spending 90% of their budget on secret cities under the ground to house a few wealthy families in the event of nuclear fallout caused by those same families, or to house congressmen and families because they would not listen to the people and represent.

Check your mailboxes,

we recently received a recruitment (army) packet addressed to our FIFTEEN year old....DAUGHTER.

My 17 yr old daughter got one too.

And my son who is 20 has been getting them for a few years now. I have told them both that I will hide them if the bastards start the draft.

Thanks folks for posting this

This is very alarming...

he will be used as cannon fodder

on the front line, infantry or some other crap job.

do or do not. there is no "try" - yoda

sorta makes you wonder, if...

...this whole economy crash is to force people to their only employment option left...which is military service.

2Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

50 ?

He must be wetting the bed by now. LOL. He can get a medical exception.

He signed up for this...

The wisdom of the "War on Terror" (or lack thereof) notwithstanding, when Grandpa signed on the dotted line he became obligated for what is happening to him, just like I was. A standard enlistment is 8 years: 4 active, 4 inactive. The 4 inactive is called the Individual Ready Reserve. My IRR obligation ended May 17, 1998. They can no longer call me up after that date. Grandpa is obviously still under contract. This is why joining the military should not be taken lightly; they own your ass... If they tell you to jump on a live grenade, guess what... The law can be found here: http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode10/usc_sec_10_0...

you missed something...

he's been out of service for 15 years. that cancels the 8 you claim.

do or do not. there is no "try" - yoda

Re: you missed something

A standard enlistment is 8 years. I don't know what his deal is. If his was 8 years and he goes over there, he's a fool.

Hal Turner predicted this

Even though Hal Turner is an idiot, he did predict this back in November. The thread was posted here on the DP.

Read an interesting response by G. Edward Griffin

in today's newslletter about Hal Turner:

(question by reader followed by Griffin's reply):

On New Year's day, a friend sent me an email containing a message from Hal Turner, a former talk-show host who, indirectly at least, is calling for insurrection against the government. After reviewing numerous serious crimes committed by the President and the President-elect, the Congress, the Federal Reserve Chairman, the Secretary of the Treasury, and Justices of the Supreme Court, Turner says:

"By themselves, any one or even two of these problems would be merely an illness that the Republic could deal with. Suffering all of these problems at the same time amounts to Cancer. A cancer that is killing our Republic.

"There are only two ways to deal with cancer: either you kill it or it kills you. As a thinking person, it ought to be plain to you at this point, what solution we have in mind and why we're telling you repeatedly, in advance, to be not afraid. We are going to do what HAS to be done. When it happens, do not be afraid. This has needed to happen for a very long time to protect this Republic and the USA will be better off once it does happen.

To those of you who are about to be dealt with, you brought this on yourselves."

Mike, be very, very careful. Turner may not be what he appears to be. There may be agent provocateurs in our midst trying to precipitate an armed revolt that, not only would be easy to put down, but would provide the usurpers with a handy excuse to declare martial law. This may happen anyway, but we don’t want to be suckered into making it easy for them.

Turner implies that there is going to be a well organized wave of citizen-led arrests and/or assassinations. Anyone who cheers such a plan could get caught in a well-laid trap designed to identify the most militant dissenters and then "disappear" them into the prison gulag.

Be very, very careful.

Tell them to go back to hell

We need you here to help fight them.

The thing you have to ask yourself is....

....if Obama wants to have the troops home from Iraq within 16 months, what the hell are they getting ready for next? Afghanistan? Pakistan? Fighting another war for Israel?

I really believe there will be another draft. They might call it something else but it's still going to end up being conscription.

Wonder when my ticket gets called in.

I got out of the Corps in '99, and went back over twice since then. I ain't taking a pay cut for the same work. Maybe they won't bother with me. If they do, I'm still gonna tell them where they can shove it and dare them to do something about it.
