I know two dozen at least. Of that 24 eleven are in the shelter.

One of the guys who was on the outside committed suicide last year.

If you were not there, or, if you do not know these guys you really can't have much to say. I know a ranger who never saw action and he can barely function.

This is not to say that vets don't function. It is to say that a percentage of these men cannot process being trained to be a killing machine and then return to society.

I know that most men can, but, the ones we are talking about cannot and they kill themselves at a rate of about 13%. That is a VA statistic.

This war sh%$ has to end.

Same story for vets in Britain. The suicide statistics are even more alarming.

I have 1 year left to serve..maybe less..and I'm done..thankfully I have a great family that would never allow me to end up as some less fortunate have..We'll see how the battle with the VA goes..

This is the kind of thing that young people need to consider before they sign up.

We are known as being able to raise money, lets do it for the troops, lets come together and take care of them ourselves. If our government wont, we should.

Agent Orange and Gulf War Syndromes, and PTSD don't really exist either. The air at Ground Zero was also safe to breath, and these patriots were also denied medical care. Our military should have the best, but would be best is to bring them all home and now. I pray the the dollar goes bust soon. Although a calamity would result, our troops would indeed come home.

My dad served in Vietnam for 4 years. He was a paramedic. He had the bad luck to be spat on when he came back. He told me that he used to change into civilian clothes before going out in public, that way he could avoid being humilliated. He didn't get mentally ill from war. He was in Japan recovering from the malaria he got in 'Nam. He told me he almost died right there. He also was in Thailand for some time. My dad did come home with some shaking (which he's never been able to recover) and he saw how his friends were killed in front of him. That's why I'm thankful for being able to have my dad with me, at home, taking care of my poor mother but we have each other. These stories about vets on our streets make me so damned mad at the government and sad at knowing that these patriots don't have the protection they need to live. :(

That is appalling, but not surprising. So many came home from Viet Nam with mental problems and they were treated like garbage when they got here. Okay, the Viet Nam War was a mistake to get in to, but that was not the fault of our soldiers. They lived through unspeakable horrors because our elected leaders told them it was important to our nation. In those days, people were too stupid or uncaring to differentiate between the troops and the leaders. LBJ and Congress deserved every sort of scorn, but our soldiers deserved a hero's welcome and the medical care they needed. They got neither. Many of them are on the streets, their lives still in shambles, destroyed by power hungry government.

Sadly, though the returning troops are treated better now by the citizens, many are still not getting the physical and mental care they need to restore their lives to some semblance of normality. The best long term remedy is obviously to stop sending these people into brutal and needless wars, but those have been there, done their duty and returned messed up need and deserve the help and support of this nation.

The Iran Contra scandal was going on at the time. I got out for medical reasons (knee surgery) before going off to OCS. Very simple, very easy.

I was not comfortable putting my life in the hands of Politicians who were illegally selling surplus weapons so they could buy drugs for Contras.

I really wanted those dress blues but I knew it was the right choice.
