As incandescent light bulbs disappear, anxious shoppers search High Street
As reported by David Derbyshire in UK "The Daily Mail" online, Jan. 7, 2009:
"Traditional 100-watt bulbs are vanishing from the High Street because of a controversial European Union decision.
Yesterday panic buyers were snapping up the remaining bulbs in a last-ditch attempt to stockpile the final supplies. Hundreds of leading supermarkets and DIY chains - including Sainsbury's, Asda and Homebase - have already sold their last remaining bulbs after a surge in panic buying.
Other stores say they have enough stocks to last until the end of next week."
Part of people's concerns involve:
-- toxic Mercury contained in the new light bulbs, and
-- a preference for the warm light and simple, round shape of the traditional bulb versus the cool glare and coiled, serpentine shape of the new bulbs, plus
-- consumer complaints of rashes, headaches, and convulsions attributed to the new bulbs.
On top of that, the new bulbs cost more than the old bulbs:
"Currently, an average supermarket price for a six pack of standard 60w pearl light bulbs is £1.21, but a single 60w low energy stick light bulb already costs around £2.19."

Should people be allowed to decide for themselves which light bulb to buy?
Or is the bulbble about to burst?

We are phasing them out also..
After being passed by Congress, Bush just signed into law a massive energy bill that will, among other things, spell the end of traditional light bulb. USA Today reports that the bill will phase out the venerable (but power-hungry) incandescent bulb over the next dozen years in favor more efficient fluorescent, halogen, and LED bulbs. Specifically, the new law holds that all light bulbs must be 25 to 35 percent more efficient by 2012 to 2014.

A little-noticed provision of the energy bill, which is expected to become law, phases out the 125-year-old bulb in the next four to 12 years in favor of a new generation of energy-efficient lights that will cost consumers more but return their investment in a few months.
http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/energy/environment/...
Under the measure, all light bulbs must use 25% to 30% less energy than today's products by 2012 to 2014. The phase-in will start with 100-watt bulbs in January 2012 and end with 40-watt bulbs in January 2014. By 2020, bulbs must be 70% more efficient.

Not a pleasant humming sound, but an annoying buzzing sound, especially half-way dimmed down.

Mercury, yum!
I've begun stocking up on normal light bulbs.

I keep getting free ones in the mail.
My taxes have already paid for them, no doubt. I haven't had any negative side effects, but its true that they are nowhere near as bright as conventional light bulbs. "Mood lighting" it used to be called.

I just wonder
how long it will take we need certificates of exemption to use the conventional ones. You can built a new bureaucrazy on that. But our politicians can prove they are struggling against global warming.
It's bizarre.

Who said, "The lights are going out all across Europe ..."?
"The lights are going out all across Europe. We will not see them lit again in our life times."
I may not have it word for word, but you Brits must know.

Yes.

I hate the
quality of the new bulbs. I have a lot of trouble reading with them for some reason it is like reading in the shade.

Bulbble about to burst
At my grandparents house around Thanksgiving, we were sitting around the dining room table when one of the fluorescent bulbs started spewing a foul smelling smoke and sparks. It didn't stop until the power was switched off. Man, that was some foul smelling crap, probably from the mercury. We were all pretty much convinced that had we not been there to shut off the power, that bulb could have very well burnt the house down.

Did you inhale any mercury?
From the stinky smoky fumes?

I suppose we all did.....
If we smelt it, I assume we were inhaling it. It really filled the entire house, not the smoke but the fumes. We opened up the doors and windows for a spell and it dissipated.

I have a box of about 100
I have a box of about 100 3-way incandescent bulbs.
I bought them at a close out sale for about 5 cents each.
Been using them over the years as bulbs burn out
Sounds like I should hold onto them now!
But..I just recently bought my first LED based bulb, built for standard sockets. I've had LED flashlights for years, but have never tried a direct incandescent replacement. It was only 3 bucks, and replaces a 25watt very nicely.
Only uses about 3-4 watts.
The CFL's DO NOT last as long as advertised, especially if the base is above the bulb when installed. Like a ceiling fixture, rather than a table lamp.

Yes, it's ridiculous!
We have it here in Germany too (of course). These bulps are indisputable toxic waste. And I know many people who went for it because they are supposed to be cheaprer (the higher acquisition costs are supposed to be outweighted by the longevity and the lower energy costs). But very often the longevity is not as it should be and the light is simply horrible! It says a lot, the EU thinks it neccessary to impose them by law instead of letting the market decide. I just wonder if not a certain industry lobbied for it, since the production of the traditional bulps is much easier and is a good entry-market for low-loan countries.

Ron Paul was right
Did you ever get headaches or rashes from them?
I've heard they flicker to cause seizures in some people.
I have studied many philosophers and many cats. The wisdom of cats is infinitely superior.--Hippolyte Taine
I never noticed they flicker
They simply have a very 'pale' unpleasant light. A little bit like neon-light. I only have one in my kitchen and I long for the day it will be fagged out.

By the very nature of the ballast within them ...
They flicker ...
But if it is visible to the naked eye ...
It is time for a new one ...
Otherwise ...
Fire hazard.
Keep that in mind.
