On February 10, 2009 it will be illegal to re-sell any used children's products including toys and clothing. That is according to the U.S. Consumer Protection & Safety Commission who pushed for the new laws after dozens of toys were recalled in 2008 because of lead concerns.
Toys, clothing and other items used by children under 12 will be subjected to lead testing and will have to have labels on them to prove that they have passed inspection.
What is raising the ire of parents and business owners far and wide is what this will mean to clothing, toys and other children products made before February 10, 2009.
Gary Walthall, the owner of Once upon a Child, a resale shop specializing in children's clothing and other items, is afraid that he'll have to close up shop.
Adding to the confusion and frustration is the fact that the U.S. Consumer Products and Safety Commission is not returning calls or e-mails to the countless re-salers and even journalists who have tried in vain to get clarification on what the law means to garage sales and how it will be enforced.

How about a campaign to send used toys to Congressmen?
Package up an old toy and mail it to your Congressman telling them you can't afford to have it tested as required by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, so you can't sell it and suggest that they might find a use for it.
The preferred shape of the toy should be sort of like a stick.

It seems this was passed in light of the lead paint nonsense that came out of China last year. Bush signed it into law in August.

Funny but yesterday I was looking for an empty store front (seems to be alot empty perhaps a new bubble to come). I wanted to start a small business for 2 reasons, the ability to generate an income in the days ahead and 2) a platform to educate people.
I want to offer personalized teeshirts/aprons ect. Provide wireless internet, coffee & cupcakes. Sell veggies that I'm growing myself and sell seedling starter plants all organic with heritage seed stock AND sell thrift store items, childrens toys, clothes & shoes. Barter, trade and be a neighborhood go to for info & supplies. So last night I see this new law...... sheesh! Talk about cutting a person off at the knees.
Why didn't they put this on the foreign distributers that send this crap to us in the first place? Because as in the days of Pharo they are taking away our straw & mud and demanding we make MORE bricks! This is crazy

You can still have this platform just get creative and research legal info. Also you might want to market this more as a community center or co/op ,than a store. When it comes to selling food/seeds, this type of establishment will have less licensing/tax responsibilities. I think your vision has much potential, just investigate and research the legalities of it.

Also for the use of the internet, you might want to look into a membership type of agreement/setup, so that your services are for members that agree to the "clubs" use. This has the potential to expanding into a very good thing for your community!
I think the key is to offer enough "services" to make a living off of. Anything related to self-sustainment should draw people in, in regards to our economic future. Maybe you can get something going in regards to alternative energy as well.
I also just thought of something else, you can host or sponsor "craft shows" where people can come in and sell their goods (doesn't have to be "hard goods", can be "soft goods" as well)...while you offer the space, at a space rental of course, so you both can make money. There's alot of possibilities out there, especially if your community doesn't have anything like it.

My dad just called me a nut because I don't think this is right and the government has people who are alot lot smarter than me and they know what is best. Kids could swallow a button ect ect...
But at least my Daughter is steaming. I think this will really wake up her many friends with kids who shop at those places and sell to those places all the time. I"ve been trying to get thier attention and have them half awake and I think this might nock it out of the park. She has LOTS of friends. There has to be a limit for people doesn't there?
