The January 20 2009 deadline for millions of American homecrafters to object to a new law requiring expensive testing of their products, is approaching fast. Child-products without certificates proving they have no lead content, will have to be scrapped.
The new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act – passed hastily to bar poisonous foreign products – also will require millions of American homecrafters to have each of their products tested at huge cost, ranging from $500 to $4000 per product – including their old stock which was manufactured before this law had even been thought up. UPDATE--they've already made changes to the regulations
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has given preliminary approval to changes in new lead-testing rules after complaints that the measures could have forced thrift stores and sellers of handmade toys to dispose of merchandise or even go out of business.
The commission's two members (a third seat is vacant) voted tentatively to exempt:
* Items with lead parts that a child cannot access;
* Clothing, toys and other goods made of natural materials such as cotton and wood; and
* Electronics that are impossible to make without lead.
The commission also tentatively approved a rule that clarifies how it determines exclusions from the law.

Also, can a toy maker slap a "For Decoration Only--not for children!" label on a toy, market it as a decoration or knickknack *wink* *wink*, and bypass the regulations that way?

The bosses of big corporations love regulations like this!
It is a lot easier to neutralize competition with regulation than it is to make products that are better, cheaper, last longer, etc. The government is quite willing to let the corporations have the protection of regulation and the government employees and the cloud of lawyers and consultants that it takes to maintain the whole mess are very happy with the accompanying job security. It is a tidy quid-pro-quo for the corporations and the government. The wild-eyed consumer protection groups get to tell their constituents "look what we did...look what we did!!!"
And you and I become the meat in the sandwich. The robber barons of corporate production win. The government further insinuates itself into the most minute levels of the society, and our lives, our liberty and our pursuits and property and happiness is siphoned away to fuel the machinery of the Matrix. Again.

What an absolutely ridiculous law that is. One could think it laughable were it not that many are making ends meet through their homecraft business. Doing this will force them to close up shop and into poverty. It's sheer tyranny.
I hope the millions of homecrafters will form a force of their own, protesting loudly and persistently.
Using the argument that it is the safety of the children at stake begins to lose its real meaning.

Once again, regulation favors the big corporations. I don't know if they are quite this intelligent, but Mattel et al. could have specifically ordered tainted toys from China and then lobbied congress for the new regulation.

I refuse to buy toys or treats for my dogs that are made in China. I picked up a toy once that I was thinking of buying and it smelled like chemicals and/or gasoline - sure enough - it was made in China.

Think of the good side of this
All these bankrupt manufacturers and retailers will be mad as hell. Things like this just bring us one step closer to the end of the US federal government. Critical mass is approaching, but not yet here. Give it a few more years to stew with chef Obama in the kitchen.

What a great law for protecting the children. Regulate the toys industry but give them carcinogenic food and drinks...the pesticides in fruits, hormones in meat, the pure chemical fast-food industry, etc.
Every year hundreds of millions of dollars are spent to find a cure for cancer...when the answer is right under our nose, just give people real food.
